Theentiretextofthisedition,includingallthetablesandequations,hasbeenreset,andagreatmanyofthenumerousfigureshavebeenredrawn.Theadditionof80pagesbringsthetotallengthofthebookto2640pages.The26theditionoftheHandbookcontainssignificantformatchangesandmajorrevisionsofexistingcontent,aswellasnewmaterialonavarietyoftopicsincludingaerodynamiclubrication,highspeedmachining,grindingfeedsandspeeds,machiningeconometrics,metalworkingfluids,ISOsurfacetexture,pipewelding,geometricdimensioningandtolerancing,gearing,andEDM.OthersubjectsintheHandbookthatareneworhavebeenrevised,expanded,orupdatedaregraphicdescriptionsoffunctionsofangles,imaginaryandcomplexnumbers,complexcoordinatesystems,contourmilling,weightofpiles,Ohmslaw,binarymultiples,forceoninclinedplanes,andmeasurementoverpins.ThoseusersinvolvedinaspectsofmachiningandgrindingwillbeinterestedinthenewtopicsMACHININGECONOMETRICSandGRINDINGFEEDSANDSPEEDS,presentedintheMachiningsection.Thecoreofallmanufacturingmethodsstartwiththecuttingedgeandthemetalremovalprocess,andimprovingthecontrolofthemachiningprocessisamajorcomponentinordertoachieveaLeanchainofmanufacturingevents.Thesesectionsdescribethemeansthatarenecessarytogetmetalcuttingprocessesundercontrolandhowtoproperlyevaluatethedecisionmaking.AmajorgoaloftheeditorsistomaketheHandbookeasiertouse.The26theditionoftheHandbookcontinuestoincorporatethetimesavingthumbtabs,muchrequestedbyusersinthepast.Thetableofcontentspagesbeginningeachmajorsection,firstintroducedforthe25thedition,haveprovenveryusefultoreaders.Consequently,thenumberofcontentspageshasbeenincreasedtoseveralpageseachformanyofthelargersections,morethorPREFACEvioughlyreflectingthecontentsofthesesections.Inthepresentedition,thePlasticssection,formerlyaseparatethumbtab,hasbeenincorporatedintothePropertiesofMaterialssection.Amajortaskinassemblingthiseditionhasbeentheexpansionandreorganizationoftheindex.Forthefirsttime,mostofthemanyStandardsreferencedintheHandbookarenowincludedintheindex.TheAmericanStandardsAssociationwasreconstitutedinAugust1969astheUnitedStatesofAmericaStandardsInstitute,andstandardsthathadbeenapprovedasAmericanStandardsweredesignatedasUSAStandards.InOctober1969,thenamewaschangedtotheAmericanNationalStandardsInstitute.Thus,thedesignationofpresentstandardsisANSIinsteadofASAorUSAS.StandardsoriginallyadoptedbytheAmericanStandardsAssociationandnotrevisedarestillreferredtointheHandbookbythedesignationASA.ANSIStandardsarecopyrightedbytheAmericanNationalStandardsInstitute,West42ndStreet,NewYork,NY10017,fromwhomcurrentcopiesmaybepurchased.ManyoftheAmericanNationalStandardsInstituteANSIStandardsthatdealwithmechanicalengineering,extractsfromwhichareincludedintheHandbook,areproducedbytheAmericanSocietyofMechanicalEngineersASME,andwearegratefulfortheirpermissiontoquoteextractsandtoupdatetheinformationcontainedinthestandards,basedontherevisionsregularlycarriedoutbytheASME.InformationregardingcurrenteditionsofanyoftheseStandardscanbeobtainedfromASMEInternational,ThreeParkAvenue,NewYork,NY10016.Userswhocallpossibledefectstotheattentionoftheeditors,ortheomissionofsomematterthatisconsideredtobeofgeneralvalue,oftenrenderaservicetotheentiremanufacturingfield.WedesiretoincreasetheusefulnessoftheHandbookasfaraspossible,soallcriticismsandsuggestionsaboutrevisions,omissions,orinclusionofnewmaterialarewelcome.ChristopherJ.McCauley,Editor
