IntegratingEducationandRealResearchAbstractPopularmediahasspawnedarecentinterestinteachingroboticsintheclassroom.Manydifferentapproacheshavebeenattempted,withmanythatfocusonrobotcompetitions.However,followingthecompetition,studentsoftendonotknowwheretoturntokeeptheircuriosityinroboticsalive.Thispaperdiscussesacollaborativeapproachthatshowsstudentsaclearpathfromearlyrobotcompetitionsthroughtocareersinthefield.Theapproachreliesonstudentparticipationinrealresearchandaladderofmentorshipthroughtheiracademicjourney.IntroductionTherehasrecentlybeenasurgeinroboticsinterestinthepopularmedia.Studentsfromkindergartenthroughgraduateschoolhavecaughtthefeverandarestudyingroboticsinmanydifferentways.OneofthemostpopularhasbeenthroughrobotcompetitionsthathaverangedinstylefromLegorobotleagues,likeBotballandFirstLegoLeague,tocomplexmechanicalleagues,liketheFirstRoboticsCompetition,tosimulationonlyleaguessuchastheRoboCupSimulationleague.Formanystudentsthesecompetitionsareaneyeopeningandlifechangingexperienceforthefirsttime,manymayseeapracticalandexcitingapplicationofmathandscience,andmaywishtopursuerobotics.Buthow,whatsthenextstepTheRemoteExplorationProgramREPisanattemptatbridgingthegapsthatexistbetweentheseearlyexperiencesandthenextstepsthatcanleadtoacareerinscience,engineeringandevenrobotics.REPisacollaborativeeffortbetweenWashingtonUniversityinSt.LouisWUSTL,theIdahoNationalEngineeringandEnvironmentalLaboratoryINEEL,theSt.LouisScienceCenter,andSt.Louisareaschools.Thegoalistocreateaninclusiveoutreachprogramofscience,engineeringandoriginalresearchthatinturnfostersaclearerpathforstudentstopursuecareersinthefieldsofscience,engineering,androbotics.Theprogramconsistsofongoingoutreachactivitiesthatculminateintheremoteexplorationofanunknownsiteusingrobots.TheRemoteExplorationProgramTheRemoteExplorationProgramREPisstructuredwithongoingscienceandengineeringoutreachprogramsthroughouttheacademicyear.However,thekeystoneeventistheremoteexplorationofanunknownsite.Forthisexploration,studentswillcometotheSt.LouisScienceCenterandteleoperatearobotthatisphysicallyagreatdistanceawayinanotherstate,toexploreanunknownenvironment.ThevisionforREPisthatthisremoteenvironmentwillshowmountainsandothergeologicfeaturesthatstudentsfromtheMidwestareunfamiliarwithtoengenderarealsenseofbeingsomewhereelse.Themissionwillthenbeforthestudentstosimplyexplorethisforeignremoteenvironmenttheyhavebeenplacedin.TheotherconceptisforstudentstocompletearealworldmissionsimilartotasksthattheINEELgroupisinterestedin.TwoofINEELscurrentinterestsareremotecharacterizationofhighradiationenvironmentsandurbansearchandrescueoperations.Forthepilotprograminthespringof2004,theremoteenvironmentwillbehousedattheSt.LouisScienceCenterandtheexplorationwillbesimilartoarealworldrobotictask.Webelievethatitwilladdvaluetoboththehumanfactorsresearchandtothestudentsexperienceiftheteleoperationactivitysimulatesarealworldroboticmissionsuchasexploringasimulatedhazardousmaterialcontaminationorexploringamockcollapsedbuilding.Startinginthespringof2005,theremoteenvironmentwillbeoutdoorsneartheINEELfacilityinIdahoFalls,ID.Forthisoutdoorenvironmentwearestillconsideringseveralexplorationtasks.Wewouldliketosimulateanenvironmentalcleanupandmonitoringtask,buthavenotworkedouthowtosimulatethiswithcontaminantsthatcaneffectivelybesensed.ProgramGoalsItsimportanttokeepinmindthattheremoteexplorationisonlyavehicletoaccomplishourgoals.REPstruefocusisitstwomaingoalstoinvolveyoungstudentsinrealresearch,andtodelineateaclearpathfromearlychildhoodinterestinroboticsthroughtocareersinthefield.Scienceandengineeringoutreacharemerelyaddedbenefitsnecessarytofulfillthemaingoals.RealResearchRecently,introducingstudentstorealresearchhasbecomeahottopicinacademiabutitreallyhasntreachedthelevelthatREPistargeting.TheNationalScienceFoundationsprogramssuchasResearchExperienceforUndergraduatesREUandtheSt.LouisareaStudentsandTeachersasResearchScientistsSTARSprogramsoftenintroduceundergraduatesandhighschoolstudentstoresearch,butREPwillofferstudentsasyoungasKindergartenanopportunitytoparticipateinrealresearch,albeitinalimitedway.ThemostsignificantportionoftherealresearchwillbehumanrobotinteractionstudieswhichwillfocusonimprovingtheperformanceoftheGraphicalUserInterfaceGUIdevelopedbyINEELfortheirrealworldrobotmissions.Aspartoftheirongoinghumanrobotinteractionandlongtermrobotautonomyresearch,K12studentswillbeintertwinedwiththeresearchasbothparticipantsandreviewers.Forthespringremoteexploration,oneofthevariableswewanttostudyisuserperformancebasedonpriorexperiencewiththeGUI.Toaccomplishthis,studentparticipantswillbedividedintoseveralgroups,basedonthelevelofexperiencethestudentshavewiththeGUI.Somewillhavenoexperience,otherssomeexperienceandtheremainderextensiveexperience.Thestudentoperatorwillthenbeallowedtoteleoperatetherobottoaccomplishthetask,whiletherestoftheclassassiststheoperatorbyperformingdataanalysisontheenvironment.Forthemoreadvancedstudents,followingtheremoteexplorationtheywillhaveanopportunitytomeetwiththehumanfactorsresearcherswhowillgiveanintroductiontohumanrobotinteractionstudies.Thestudentswillthengettocontributeasresearcherastheyparticipateinreviewingthevideooftheirinteraction,guidedbytheprofessionalresearchers.CareerPathThesignificanceofusingrealworldapplicationsforthepurposeofthesimulationismultifaceted.OneofthemostimportantreasonsisthattheserealworldactivitiesgroundthehumanrobotinteractionresearchbecauseitevaluatestheGUIbeingusedforitsoriginalintention.Butevenmoreimportantly,usingarealworldapplicationisanessentiallinkinREPschainthatleadsinterestedstudentstocareersinscience,engineeringandrobotics.Itsasubtlepoint,butmanystudentsthatparticipateinrobotcompetitionshaveverylittleexposuretorobotsoutsidethecompetition.WhenaskedforarealworldapplicationtheironlyexamplesmaybefactoryrobotworkersorMarsrovers.Factoryrobotsarentsexy,andNASAisntabouttoletakindergartenerdriveSpritorOpportunity.REPoffersstudentsanopportunitytoseefirsthandwhatrobotsandroboticistsdointherealworldandtomeetpotentialfuturerolemodels.ButthenREPbuildsonthisexperience.Forthosestudentsthatareinterestedtheycanparticipateatthenextlevel.TheycanparticipateinvoluntarysupplementalprogramssuchastheSaturdayScienceSeminarsortheSaturdayEngineeringEventsorevenoneofthesummeropportunities.REPhasamentorshipladderforinterestedstudentsbuiltintotheseactivities.Itusesstudentsthatexcelatonegradeleveltoassiststudentsinlowerlevels.Inthisinteractionthehighergradestudentsalsohavetheopportunitytosharewiththeyoungerstudentstheircurrentprojects.Bothstudentstakeawayfromthisexperience.Theolderstudentseestheenthusiasmandtherespecttheyoungerpaysthem,andtheyoungerstudentgainsfromadviceandguidanceoftheolder.Thementorshipladderisalreadybeingestablished.Thefirstrungwasestablishingasummermentorshipprogramforaspiringhighschoolstudents.ThesestudentshadtheopportunitytocometoWUSTLduringthesummermonthsandstudyrobotics.AsecondrungwasestablishedwhenanundergraduatewhohadgottenexcitedaboutFIRSTroboticscontinuedherinterestandcontinuedtheworkofothersonaprototypeplanetaryroveratWUSTLunderthementorshipofagraduatestudent.AndtheladdercontinuestodevelopthisfallstudentsatGatewayMiddleSchool,aSt.LouisPublicSchoolthatWUSTLworkswith,workedoncreatinganoutdoorrobottobedeployedattheremotesite.Thosestudentsthatexcelledhavebeenaskedbacktohelpmentornewstudentsinasimilarproject.AndtheladderwillcontinuetodevelopasundergraduatestudentswillbegiventheopportunitytocontinuetheirinterestatreallabssuchasINEELduringthesummer,andpeopleinindustryaregiventheopportunitytoreturntograduateschooltocompleteadvanceddegrees.ScienceOutreachAsideproductofREParetheScientificOutreachopportunitiesitproduces.TherearethreemajorcomponentstoREPsscientificoutreachSaturdayScienceSeminars,St.LouisScienceCenterExhibits,andclassroomtieins.SaturdayScienceSeminarswillofferinsightintothescienceofrobotics.Takingahigherlevellookatthecomponentsofarobot,studentswillspendsignificanttimelearninghowtoteleoperatetherobotsusingtheinterfaceandmaylearnaboutthescienceofsearchandrescueorhazardousmaterialcleanup.InadditiontoMissionControlandtherobottrainingarea,theSt.LouisScienceCenterwillhaveexhibitspaceopenforthegeneralpublictolearnaboutrobot
