Int.J.Mach.ToolsManufact.Vol.31,No.2,pp.167181,1991.08906955/9153.00.00PrintedinGreatBritainPergamonPressplcGENERATIONANDGEOMETRYOFHYPOIDGEARMEMBERWITHFACEHOBBEDTEETHOFUNIFORMDEPTHF.L.LITVlN,W.S.CHAING,C.KUAN,M.LUNDYtandW.J.TSUNGtReceived23August1989infinalform15August1990AbstractTheauthorshavedescribedthemethodandkinematicsforgenerationofhypoidgearmemberswithfacehobbedteethofuniformdepthandderivedequationsforthetoolgeometryandthetoothsurface.Thedevelopedequationsarenecessaryforthecomputerizedinspectionofgeartoothsurfacebycoordinatemeasuringmachines,forgenerationofdiestoforgethegears,andtorepresentpartiallytheinputdataforcomputerizedsimulationofmeshingandcontactofhypoidgeardrives.1.INTRODUCTIONHYVOlDgearshavefoundwidespreadapplicationintheautomotiveindustry.TheyaremanufacturedusingcuttingmachinesdesignedbytheGleasonWorkU.S.A.andOerlikonSwitzerland.Ahypoidgeardriveisdesignedfortransformationofmotionsbetweencrossedaxes.ThereferencesurfacesofthepinionandgeararepitchconesthatareintangencyatpointPpitchpointchoseninthefixedcoordinatesystemFig.1.Usually,theaxesofrotationofhypoidgearsformanangleof90°.TheshortestdistancebetweentheaxesofrotationisdesignatedbyEandtheapicesofpitchconesarenotifiedbyO1and02.TheplanethatistangenttothepitchconespitchplanepassesthroughtheapicesofthepitchconesandpitchpointP.Figure2showspitchpointP,theshortestdistanceE,theangularvelocitiestooandto2ofthepinionandthegeardlandd2determinethelocationofapicesofpitchconesO1and02withrespecttogearshortestdistance.Therearetwotypesofhypoidgearsiwithtaperedteeth,andiiwithteethofuniformdepth,andtheyaregeneratedrespectivelybyithefacemilledmethod,andiithefacehobbedone.Thefacemilledmethodisbasedontheapplicationofatoolwhosegeneratingsurfaceisacone.Theteetharetapered.Eachtoothsometimeseveneachsideofthetoothisgeneratedseparatelyandindexingisrequiredforthegenerationofthenexttooth.Thegeartoothsurfaceisanenvelopeofthefamilyoftoolsurfaces.Theexceptionistheformatecutgearwhosesurfacecoincideswiththetoolsurface.Thefacehobbedmethodisbasedongenerationofthetoothsurfacebytwofinishingblades.Thetoothsurfacerepresentsafamilyofcurvesstraightlinesthatisgeneratedbytheshapeoftheblade.Theteethareofuniformdepth.Theprocessforgenerationisacontinuousoneandindexingisnotrequired.ThetheoryofgenerationandmathematicaldescriptionofhypoidgearswithtaperedtoothsurfaceshasbeenthesubjectofintensiveresearchbyGleasonengineers\1\,andLitvinetal.\2\.MethodsfordeterminationofanenvelopeofafamilyofsurfaceshavebeendiscussedbyLitvin\3\.Thetheoryofgenerationandmathematicalrepresentationofsurfacesforfacehobbedhypoidgearshasnotbeenpublishedintheliterature.ThereareseveralreasonswhymathematicalrepresentationofhypoidgeartoothsurfacesisimportantformanufacturingthemwithhighprecisionDepartmentofMechanicalEngineering,UniversityofIllinoisatChicago,Illinois,U.S.A.tOearEngineeringDepartment,DanaCorporation,Indiana,U.S.A.167168F.L.LtrvtNetal.02//.7_,L.FI.1,Pitchconesofhypoidgears.d2r,2,f/fIPitchplaneFt.2.Pitchplaneofhypoidgears.1Itisnecessarytooptimizethemachinetoolsettingsinordertoreducetheleveloftransmissionerrorstheycausevibrationsandprovideaproperbearingcontact.Thiscanbeachievedbycomputerizedsimulationofmeshingandcontactofgeartoothsurfacesincontinuoustangency.Analytically,thismeansthatthegeartoothsurfacesmusthaveacommonpositionvectorandeollinearnormalatanyinstantaneouspointofcontact\3\.2Itisnecessarytocompensateforthedistortionofgeartoothsurfacesthatarecausedbyheattreatmentandbyerrorsintheinstallmentofmachinetoolsettings.Thisgoalcanbeachievedbypropercorrectionsofmachinetoolsettings.Forthispurposethetoothsurfaceofthefirstgearfromthesetofgearstobegeneratedisinspectedbyacoordinatemeasuringmachine\2,4,5\.Thisinspectionprovidestheinformationondeviationsoftherealtoothsurfacesfromthetheoreticalonethatmustberepresentedanalytically.Theminimizationofdeviationsbycorrectionofalimitednumberparametersthemachinetoolsettingsisatypicalmathematicalproblemofoptimization.HypoidGearmember1693Forgingofgearsrequiresgenerationofdiesthathavetocopythegeartoothsurfaces.Thediesaregeneratedpointbypointandthiscanbedoneifthegeartoothsurfaceisrepresentedanalytically.Thethreereasonsaboveexplainwhyanalyticalrepresentationoffacehobbedgeartoothsurfaceswillbenefittheirmanufacturing.Thecontentsofthispapercoverthedescriptionofthemethodforgenerationofthegearmemberoffacebobbedgeardrives,andtheanalyticalrepresentationofthegeartoothsurface.Theobtainedresultsarethebasisforideterminationoftoothsurfacedeviationsbycoordinatemeasurements,iigenerationofdiesforforging,andiiiaspartoftheinputdataforcomputerizedsimulationmeshingandcontactofhypoidgeardrives\2,6\.2.PRINCIPLESOFGEARTOOTHSURFACEGENERATIONTheprincipleofgeartoothgenerationisshownschematicallyinFig.3.TheheadcutterisprovidedwithNwgroupsofblades.Eachgroupcontains3bladesoneforroughcuttingandtwofinishingbladesoneforeachsideofthetooth.Whiletheheadcutterisrotatedthroughtheangle2r/Nw,thebeinggeneratedgearisrotatedthroughtheangle2rr/N2,whereN2isthenumberofgearteeth.Thusthenextgroupofbladeswillstarttocutthenextgear
