It is still the book that I turn to when I have physical unrest that requires deeper understanding. Louise Hay is the pioneer in looking at the connection between the physical unrest that we have in our body and the emotional connection. At the time that she wrote the book many people scoffed at this idea, but it is now widely accepted and millions of people refer to it on a daily basis.2) The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz: Maintaining a sense of reliability and faith is developed through understanding to The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz written in 1997. We are faced with rules and regulations; dont do this, dont do that, watch what you are doing, be kind, loyal, faithful etc. The four agreements represent a simple system of maintaining your own inner authority while practicing being a true person with other people.3) Slowing Down to the Speed of Life, Richard Carlson and Joseph Bailey: This is a new one in my “bedside collection” and one that has made the biggest impact on me lately. Written in 1997, it is even more relevant today than it was when it was written. The idea of “slowing down” to get there faster was extremely hard for me to understand. As a human species we seem to enjoy moving fast and expecting quick results, especially from ourselves. I should be successful now, I should be slim now, get me to my destination now in contrast to “in the fullness of time” when I am ready.4) The Game of Life and How to Play It, Florence Scovel-Shinn: A classic book that was first published in 1925 and remains one of my favorite books of all time. Scovel-Shinn understood the power of our words to express either our deepest desires or our most horrible nightmares. So where does this leave you? The way I see it is if you want to Heal Your Life” then you had better learn how to play “The Game of Life” by learning how to “Slow Down to the Speed of Life” and keep the “Four Agreements”. The solution may not be easy to do but it is simple. In fact, most solutions are pretty simple, and it is us humans that want to complicate it.21. According to the author, people who are lacking in personal freedom should read _.A. You Can Heal Your Life B. The Four AgreementsC. Slowing Down to the Speed of LifeD. The Game of Life and How to Play It22. In which part of a magazine would you probably find this passage?A. Book ReviewsB. Self ImprovementC. Arts & EntertainmentD. Reference & Education23. In the authors opinion, the four books _.A. tell us four interesting storiesB. represent four stages of lifeC. represent four attitudesD. offer four ways to change our life and mindBI was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The advertisement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box in Richland Hills and day between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Since I work from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45-minute lunch break.Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes. Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for 15 minutes waiting for the bus. By the time I saw one come around the comer, there was not enough time left to make the trip.So I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again next day. On Thursday, my luck changed, I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly 20 minutes. When I got there, however, I found a long line of people at the box office, I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back across the town.By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi. It was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but felt like an hour to me. When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, however, I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.24. Where did the writer learn that there would be a concert?A. From his friend.B. From the newspaper.C. From one of his work-mates.D. Over the radio.25. How many times had the writer give up going to the theater before he made it?A. Once. B. Twice. C. Three times.D. Four times. 26. The underlined “relieved” may best be replaced by . A. surprised. B. puzzled.C. confused. D. delighted.27. How would the writer most probably feel at last? A. Satisfied. B. Calm.C. Upset. D. Excited.CThe World Health Organization says that the disease polio is no longer widespread in India. In 2009,half of the worlds cases of polio were there. But In 2011, there was only one new case of polio in the country. Polio is caused by a virus. It spreads very quickly from one person to another. Victims often lose the use of their arms and legs. In the most serious cases, polio can kill a person. Twenty-five years ago, polio affected about 200, 000 children in India each year. The United Nations childrens organization, UNICEF, sent teams. of health workers into local villages. Team members told families in their neighborhood about the importance of giving liquid medicine to children to protect them against polio. But it was not easy at first. A member said, “They used to think that our children will not be able to have children when they grow up if they get the drop. They used to think like this. But now they dont. Now they allow their kids to get the drops.” Now things have changed. Asma Khatun is a mother in the town of Ghaziabad in the northern state of Utter Pradesh. She said, “Whenever anyone comes, we get the children vaccinated(接种疫苗). Even if nobody came to our house, we would send our children to a clinic to get vaccinated. A local Muslim leader says the vaccination campaign has been successful because it is supported by religious leaders. He said, “The polio vaccination campaign has been successful here because our Muslim scholars are with us. With their support, we are able to make people understand that giving children the vaccine is beneficial and crucial.”The Indian government has now launched a new campaign to vaccinate 170 million children under the age of five. The campaign will target newborn babies, migrants and people living in poor, crowded areas where the disease spreads more quickly. 28. What is the writers purpose in writing the passage?A. To tell the world how to fight against polio. B. To tell us good news about fighting against polio in India. C. To prove that with good methods polio can be prevented. D. To explain why people in India are no longer afraid of polio. 29. Nearly seventy percent of people living in the region lack access to electricity, forcing them to spend significant amounts of their income on costly and unhealthy forms of energy such as diesel (柴油) fuel to run generators and kerosene (煤油) for lanterns. But if there is one thing Africa is not lacking, it is sunshine. And that means a lot; indeed, for some of the worlds poorest people, it makes all the difference in the world.A little more than a year ago, Power Africa a U.S. Government initiative (倡议) coordinated by the U. S. Agency for International Development, or USAID and Power Africas partners, the United Kingdom Department for International Development, Shell Foundation, and the African Development Bank, started the Scaling Off-Grid Energy Grand Challenge for .Development, with a focus on pay-as-you-go solar home systems. The Challenges goal is to provide 20 million off-grid (离网) households in sub-Saharan Africa with clean, affordable electricity by 2030. So far, the Challenge has made 40-plus investments in early-stage, off-grid energy companies, which are expected to result in some 4.8 million new electrical connections. One reason for the success of the, start-up companies that have won grants (资助) from the Challenge is the fact that the cost of solar technology is falling fast, so it is within the means of those who live away from traditional power grids. And thanks to the new system of mobile money and pay-as-you-go financing, they can purchase the solar power-generating equipment they need and pay for it in daily installments (分期付款) from their telephones, for as little as 15 cents a day. Thanks to these technological and financial innovations (创新), many people are getting electricity for the first time every day. In these newly-electrified communities, businesses can boom, clinics can safely store vaccines and students may study long after dark. Indeed, access to clean and reliable electricity can enable entire communities to escape the cycle of extreme poverty.32. What is the main problem people in sub-Saharan Africa are faced with, according to Paragraph 1?A. They are lack of electricity.B. They are lack of diesel fuel and kerosene.C. They are lack of money.D. They are lack of sunshine.33. Whats the aim of Power Africa?A. To make people richer.B. To make people healthier.C. To provide people with clean food and water.D.
