People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives. But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City its present population is 762.24. What attracted the early settlers to New York City?A. Its business culture.B. Its small population.C. Its geographical position.D. Its favourable climate.25. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?A. Two-thirds of them stayed there.B. One out of five people got rich.C. Almost everyone gave up.D. Half of them died.26. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson?A. They found the city too crowded.B. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.C. They were unable to stand the winter.D. They were short of food.27. What is the text mainly about?A. The rise and fall of a city.B. The gold rush in Canada.C. Journeys into the wilderness.D. Tourism in Dawson.CWhen Julie Jones and Caroline Atkin were schoolgirls, they promised to be best friends for ever. Years later, Caroline died from a brain tumor at the age of 45, leaving five children. In her last weeks, she asked Julie to raise the children as her own. Julie, a single mother of three with a small income, didnt hesitate. “I held her in my arms and said Youll be OK, but I knew I was losing her.” She says.“The hospital rang me and I rushed there, but Caroline had just gone,” she says. “I went to her house. The children arrived home from school in a taxi and I gathered them in my arms and said: Mommy has gone to Heaven.”“Michael, who was 11, left the room. Kieran, ten, sat in great surprise; James, nine, broke down; while Emma, seven, and Chantelle, five uneasy. I brought them home.”Julie, mother of Adam, 20, Peter, 19, and 14-year-old Christian, moved the table from her dining room to turn it into an extra bedroom for the girls. She says “I put a tent up in the garden, and the children took turns to camp outside. We turned into a game. The children were terribly hurt by losing both their parents. But now, despite our lack of space and money, we have become one happy family.” The table in the kitchen is so small that Julie had to cook Christmas dinner in two sittings. Her eldest son has left for university and his bedroom is used by the younger boys.Julie had to work 50 hours a week and runs the home on her salary.“The children arent quiet anymore. The house is filled with screams and shouts and laughter.” she says. “They say Julie, you make us so happy, but the truth is that theyre the ones who make me happy. Im not extraordinary. Im just a mum.”28. What can we know about Julie from the text?A. She had lived a rich life before the adoption.B. She promised to adopt Carolines children as a schoolgirl.C. Using the dining room as a bedroom.B. Putting a tent up in the garden.C. Persuading her eldest son to leave for university.D. Cooking Christmas dinner i n two sittings.30. From the last paragraph, we can know that Julie is _ . A. annoyed B. tired C. modest D. energetic31. What would be the best title for the text?A. A mother to five orphans B. Five lucky childrenC. Carolines death D. Troubles of raising childrenDWhy do some people live to be older than others? You know the standard explanations: keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc.But what effect does your personality have on your longevity? Do some kinds of personalities lead to longer lives? A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at this question by examining the personality characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100.The study shows that those living the longest are more outgoing, more active and less neurotic(神经质的) than other people.Longliving women are also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you would expect from the evolutionary theory: those who like to make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough time.Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous have no impact on whether study participants are likely to live longer. Those who are more selfdisciplined, for instance, are no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas have no relationship with long life, which might explain all those badtempered old people who are fixed in their ways.Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing as possible.Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mothers personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets.Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to break when were adults, which may mean that kids of depressed moms end up dying younger.Personality isnt destiny, and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isnt just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health.32According to the author, outgoing and sympathetic people_Ahave a good understanding of evolutionBare probably more active and neuroticCare more likely to recover from hardshipDgenerally appear more resourceful33What finding of the study might be out of our expectation?AHelpful people can live a relatively long life.BBeing selfdisciplined makes no difference to longevity.CReadiness to accept new ideas offers more possibility to enjoy longevity.DPersonality characteristics that prove advantageous actually vary with times.34What does the recent study of Norwegian mothers show?AMothers depression may affect their childrens life spans.BPeople with unhealthy eating habits are likely to die at a young age.CMothers may have a longer influence on children than fathers.DChildren s personality characteristics are always shaped by their mothers.35What can we learn from the findings of the two new studies?AAnxiety and depression more often than not cut short ones life span.BA person s lifestyle is largely related to his or her health.CPersonality plays a decisive and significant role in how healthy one is.DA mixture of mental and physical health produces longevity.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选题中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。How to Pick the Perfect WatermelonI love watermelon, but what I don t love about watermelon is picking them out. There is nothing worse than cutting into a watermelon and having it taste not sweet. 36 Evaluation: You need to evaluate your watermelon to make sure that the watermelon is symmetrical(匀称). Irregular shapes typically indicate the watermelon received inconsistent amounts of sunshine and water.Color and Appearance: The color of the surface is extremely important. 37 If its shiny, its not ripe yet. Another important thing is to look for the field spot. This will be a yellow spot on the underside of a watermelon. It should be a creamy yellow color. 38 Dont take the watermelon if the field spot is white or non-existent. 39 For a sweeter and riper watermelon, there shouldnt be a visible stem (茎) on the surface. If theres a stem, it indicates that the watermelon doesnt fall off the vine on its own.Knock on it: Gently knock on the watermelon, and listen to the sound it makes. A ripe watermelon should have a full, deep, and hollow sound. 40 Make sure of the firmness of the melon when you knock on it. You want the surface to be hard and firm.A. Look at the stem.B. The darker the yellow, the sweeter the melon.C. Watermelon can help you increase your brain power.D. While an under ripe melon will make a more dull one.E.
