Next go over quickly the poems in the reading part. And then tick the correct box/boxes for each question on P9,Pre-reading-(1m),Five kinds of poems,Nursery rhymes,Cinquain,List poems,Tang poems,Haiku,What kinds of poem are mentioned? Poem B is an amusing nonsense poem which describes images of some ridiculous things. Poem C is about losing a football match and the writer lists a lot of excuses for their failure. Poem D is a description of a lovely brother. Poem E is a description of hot and boring summer. Poem F describes how a butterfly rests on a tree. Poem G describes that the weather is warmer and the village is full of happy children. Poem H is a translation of a Tang poem, which describes a woman who waited for her beloved husband to come back from a journey.,3.,Most probably Poems D,F,G,H. a) Poems A and B.,Hush, little baby, dont say a word, Papas going to buy you a mockingbird. Poem As rhyming pairs: word, mockingbird; sing, ring; brass, looking-glass; broke, billy-goat; away, today Poem Bs rhyming pairs: fire, squire; high, sky; lead, dead; race, lace; cat, hat; too, true,Suggested answers to Exercise 2:,They didnt win because they didnt have enough time; they didnt have thousands of fans screaming; they stayed up too late the night before; they ran out of energy. The author doesnt believe his excuses, because at the end of the poem the speaker admits that they just did not play well enough to win (We would have won if wed been better!),Poem D: His/ Her brother. Poem D: The author likes his subject. Although the speaker describes a couple of negative aspects of his/ her brother (teasing, enemy), the reader can feel the affection that the speaker feels for his/ her brother. Poem E: Summer. Poem E: The author doesnt like his subject. The reader gets the feeling that the speaker cannot wait until the summer is over. The words drooping, dreading, week in, week out and endless convey this feeling.,Poem H: A womans husband has gone away. The woman waits for him by the river where she last saw him. She waits and waits, never moving from that spot and never speaking, while the river continues to flow and the wind and rain come and go.,There is not one correct answer to this. We cannot know what emotions the woman is feeling. She probably has a wide range of feelings and could have any of the listed feelings expect perhaps joy. She probably feels lonely; she probably feels love for her husband and trusts that he will return; she probably feels sorrow for her husband because her has left her.,Baa, baa, black sheep, Have you any wool?
