Steering and Braking System,A steering system permits a driver to control the direction of movement of his automobile.Its basic parts are a steering wheel, a steering shaft, a steering gear that changes the rotary motion of the steering shaft to the reciprocating motion of a pitman arm, a linkage system, and a pivot system for the wheels. 转向系帮助驾驶员控制汽车的运动方向。它的基本组成有1个方向盘、1个转向柱、1个将转向柱回转动作转换成转向臂往返运动的转向齿轮、1套连杆机构和1个车轮转动系统。,Every steering system includes a linkage that connects the front wheels to each other and to the steering gear. The usual automobile linkage consists of a pitman arm, an idler arm, two tie rod assemblies, a relay rod, and two knuckle arms. Caster (viewed from the side of a vehicle) is the angle formed by a line through the upper and lower ball joints and a true vertical line. Where the line through the ball joints tilts from vertical toward the rear of the vehicle, the caster is positive, and if it tilts toward the front, the caster is negative. The purpose of caster is to provide better and easier steering, to keep the vehicle running straight ahead, and to assist in returning the wheels to the straight running position after a turn. The usual system makes use of brake drums attached to the wheels, movable brake shoes mounted securely on the vehicle and enclosed by the drums, a hydraulic force system, and a linkage system. When the driver applies force to a foot pedal in the linkage system,the force is transmitted by the hydraulic system to the brake shoes. The primary (front) brake shoe, which has a shorter lining, is placed so that it faces the front of the vehicle. The secondary (rear) shoe faces the rear, and the two shoes are connected to each other at the bottom by the adjusting mechanism. The shoes are held to, and work against, pads on the backing plate. Return springs, which connect the brake shoes to the anchor pin,pull the shoes out of contact with the brake drum when hydraulic pressure in thewheel cylinder is relaxed. Ball bearings and tapered roller bearings can be used to support and guide the rotation of the front wheels of a vehicle. Of the two, tapered roIler bearings are the most widely used. A complete ball bearing assembly for one wheel includes an inner race, inner bearing assembly, outer bearing assembly, and outer race. A complete roller bearing assembly is com posed of an inner race (cup), inner bearing assembly (cone), outer race, and outerbearing assembly. A cage keeps the rollers or balls in place in each individual bearing assembly. Qualities that brake finings must possess are: little or no tendency to expand or compress when heated, resistance to moisture, resistance to scoring, quiet and odor-free operation, long service life, and fade resistance.
