It takes hard work, practice, and patience. After all, to run a marathon, you have to run 26.2 miles by foot! Think about it this way: 26.2 miles is the same as running the length of a football field more than 460 times. It takes most people four or five hours to finish.By the age of 30, Lea Tambellini had run more than five marathons and had no plans to stop. She had always been an athlete. When she was in high school, she swam on her schools swim team and ran to stay healthy and active. Her mom and dad ran marathons, and when she was 22, they helped her train for her first marathon. Leas first marathon took place in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was called “The Flying Pig.”. “I was very nervous,” she said, “but I had my mom there, so that helped.” Running the race was hard, but the hardest part was when she ran past a cookie factory and smelled cookies at mile 18. “I just wanted to be done,” she said. “I was spent, my mom kept me going. It was already her 15th Marathon.”Today, thousands of people run marathons every year. Runners train for months to get ready. To prepare for one of the marathons, Lea ran four to five times every week. On weekdays she completed shorter runs, five or six miles at most. But on the weekends she ran long distances13 miles, 15 miles, and 20 miles!“I dont mind training because I get excited about working toward something. And I loverunning with a group of friends and working toward the goal together. But it does take a lot oftime.” Running a marathon is a great achievement. “Its a great feeling of accomplishment and nothing feels as wonderful as reaching my goal when I cross the finish line,” Lea explained. “I cant wait for the next one!”21. What contributed to Lea becoming a marathon runner?A. Her great patience and life ambition to be a successful athlete.B. Her athletic experience and her parents guidance.C. Her strong interest in swimming and long-distance running.D. Her love for running with friends and achieving a goal together.22. What does Lea mean by saying “I was spent” in paragraph 3?A. I was overcome by hunger. B. I was extremely exhausted. C. I felt like quitting my sporting career. D. I was feeling increasingly nervous. 23. How did Leas feeling of running a marathon change over the years?A. From curiosity to enthusiasm. B. From thrill to boredom. C. From delight to disappointment. D. From nervousness to excitement.BFor the Swiss, punctuality(准时)is a source of deep satisfaction. They obtain real joy from the fact that life unfolds on time and in a highly efficient manner. Whenever I visit Switzerland, I go through several stages of punctuality reaction. At first it delights me, especially if Im coming from Neighbouring Italy or France with their rather more flexible approach to timekeeping. By contrast, life in Switzerland is enthusiastic and dependable. If someone says they will meet me at 2 pm, they arrive at 2 pm not 2:05 (or 1:55,for that matter). I like this, for a while. Then it annoys me. The extreme punctuality strikes me as a kind of being mean, and I find myself agreeing with the English writer Evelyn Waugh who said that “punctuality is the virtue of the bored.”That is unfair though, and finally I come to appreciate Swiss punctuality for what it is: a deep expression of respect for other people. A punctual person is a considerate one. By showing up on time for everything, a Swiss person is saying, in effect, “I value your time and,by extension, I value you.”Its no coincidence that the Swiss are the worlds watchmakers. Which came first, the precise clocks and watches or the precise people? Hard to say, but the result is the same: a nation where the trains and everything else really do run on time. How to explain this punctuality? No one knows for sure. But a popular theory is that, historically, it arises from the tough, mountainous area. Either you planted your crops on time and harvested them at the correct time or, well, you starved.Punctuality, sadly, is a dying art in many parts of the world. Mobile phones are partly to blame. We feel less compelled(紧迫的)to arrive on time if we can always text to say were running a few minutes late. I dont sense that is happening in Switzerland, though.Punctuality is not without its weaknesses. Extreme punctuality also creates an expectation, and if that expectation is not met, disappointment follows. On those rare occasions when things do not function smoothly, the Swiss get nervous, confused and angry.24. Whats NOT the authors attitude towards the Swiss punctuality? A. Exhausted. B. Pleasant. C. Annoyed.D. Appreciated.25. What do the Swiss people want to show by arriving on time? A. To show that they have the best watches. B. To show that they are considerate persons.C. To show their respect for other people. D. To show that they are the best watchmakers in the world.26. The passage is probably taken from a . A. A history book B. A cultural guidebook C. A business newspaper D. An economic magazineCTwo friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence. Given that this is the case, why arent students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit?First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱). For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isnt in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict. Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution (解决) stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words, name-calling, and accusation only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control. After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy for conflict resolution; listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speakers position. Then the two people should change roles. Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesnt mean trying to figure out whats wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesnt, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution. There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesnt mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, 64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.27.This article is mainly about A. the cause of arguments in schools B. how to analyze youth violence C. how to deal with school conflicts D. the lives of school children 28.From Paragraph 2 we can learn that_.A. violence is more likely to occur at lunchtimeB. students tend to lose their temper easilyC. the eating habit of a student is often the cause of a fight D. a small conflict can lead to violence29.Why do students need to ask themselves the questions stated in Paragraph 5?A. Along with feelings of insecurity, loss of control and nervousness, physical effects, including sleep issues, tiredness and loss of appetite, are also caused by homesickness. 31 Check them out below:Realize that feeling homesick is 100 percent normal.Almost everyone experiences homesickness when moving to a new place-some people might just be better at hiding it. 32 Homesickness is a normal and evolutionarily healthy reaction.Make connections with new people in comfortable settings.Feeling homesick when separated from loved ones motivates people to want to be with those supportive people. 33 When making new connections, its best to stick to the style that works for you in order to ease homesickness. 34 This point is vital and also one of the hardest to accomplish. Self-compassion is loving yourself just as you love the ones you care about. The most important step in practicing self-compassion is substituting negative, critical and, sometimes, automatic thoughts about yourself with thoughts that are more supportive and kind.Keep tabs on your negativity. Its also useful to ask yourself how much of your homesickness is due to an event, such as being separated from loved ones, and how much is from how youre understanding a situation. 35 A positive outlook on a situation can do wonders for your mood, but it often can be hard to practice. You can silence negative thoughts in many ways, including reciting positive mantras(祷文), keeping a journal or even taking a walk in a park. If youre dealing with feelings of homesickness, remember youre not alone. Even though theres no place like home, give yourself some time and care, you might find yourself falling in love with a new place.A. Learn to help others.B. Practice self-compassion.C.
