翻译原文MotorizedPulleysSolveHarshEnvironmentalProblemsatNorthAmericanShipLoadingTerminalsKeywordsMotorizedPulleys,ShipLoaders,BucketWheelStackerReclaimers,ConveyorBelts1AbstractThispaperpresentsdesignandoperationalchallengesfacedbythreedifferentshiploadingfacilityoperators,onehandlingexportcoalontheGulfofAlaskaandtwohandlingtaconiteironorepelletsontheNorthAmericanGreatLakes.Extremetemperaturesandabrasivematerials,coupledwithaneedforcompactness,madeinternallypoweredandhermeticallysealedMotorizedPulleystheoptimaldesignchoicefordrivingshiploaderandbucketwheelreclaimerconveyorbelts.OriginallyaEuropeanidea,theMotorizedPulleywasslowingainingacceptanceinNorthAmericainthetwentiethcentury.However,theinternallypoweredconveyorbeltdrivehasrecentlybecomemorepopular,especiallywhereambientconditions,materialhandled,orcompactequipmentdesignmakeexposeddrivesdifficulttointegrateandoperate.2IntroductionWhatdoSeward,AlaskaSuperior,WisconsinandEscanaba,MichiganhaveincommonEachisthelocationofamajorrailtoshipbulkstorageandtransferfacility,ownedandoperatedbyarailroadcompany.Eachislocatedonwaternorthof45ºNlatitude,wherewintertemperaturescandropto–40ºF40ºCandhumidityreachnearly100.Andeachhandlesabrasiveand/orcorrosivematerial.Oneotherimportantfeatureiscommontothesefacilities...theRulmecaMotorizedPulley.RulmecasinternallypoweredandhermeticallysealedMotorizedPulleywasselectedtoupgradekeydrivesonshiploaderandbucketwheelreclaimerconveyorbelts.Thispaperwillrevieweachfacilityslayout,throughput,andparticularchallengesanditwillexplainwhydesignersselectedMotorizedPulleytechnology.ThesesuccessfulapplicationswillhelpexplainthegrowthinacceptanceofMotorizedPulleytechnologyinNorthAmerica,especiallyinharshenvironments.3MotorizedPulleyTechnologyTheMotorizedPulleyconceptwasdevelopedinthe1950stoprovideareliablemeansofdrivingbeltconveyors.Equipmentdesignersquicklydiscoveredthatenclosingthedrivesmotorandgearboxwithinahermeticallysealedandoilfilledpulleyshellnotonlymadethedrivecompact,italsogreatlyimprovedthedrivesreliabilityandservicelife.Fig.1RulmecaMotorizedPulleyenclosesmotorandgearboxwithinhermeticallysealedoilfilledshelltoprotectmovingcomponentsfromharshenvironmentwhilesavingspace.Compactness,reliability,longservicelife,andlimitedmaintenancerequirementsmadetheMotorizedPulleyapopularconveyordriveforbulkhandlingequipmentdesignersinEurope.Largemachinerysuchasbucketwheelreclaimers,shiploaders,andtunnelboringequipmentsoonhadMotorizedPulleysinstalledasoriginalequipment.AndplantoperatorsbeganreplacingwornexposedconveyordriveswithMotorizedPulleysatfacilitieshandlingmaterialssuchasfertilizer,sandgravel,steel,ore,andwoodproducts.EachMotorizedPulleyconsistsofanACsquirrelcageinductionmotor,directlycoupledtoahelical/spurgearbox,mountedonafixednonrotatingshaft,andhermeticallysealedwithinthecylindricalpulleyshell.TodaysMotorizedPulleyincorporatesawidearrayofpowersandspeedsaswellasoptionalfeatures,suchasbuiltinmechanicalbackstops,anticondensationheaters,andelectromechanicalbrakes.4AllouezDock54.1SynopsisofUpgradeBurlingtonNorthernSantaFeRailroadBNSFrecentlycompletedtheoverhauloftwoofthree40yearoldcrawlermountedbucketwheelreclaimersatthecompanysrailtoshiptransferterminalfortaconitepelletslocatednearSuperior,Wisconsin.4.2ObjectiveofUpgradeTheobjectiveoftheupgradewastoreducehighmaintenanceexpensewhileimprovingsystemreliabilityinthestockpilearea.Theupgradeincludedstructuralchanges,replacementofonboarddieselengines,andtheinstallationofRulmecaMotorizedPulleys.ThechallengeforBNSFoperationswastokeepthe40yearoldmachinesworkingefficientlyinspiteofthefactthatthemachinesmanufacturerhadgoneoutofbusinessmorethan20yearsago.TheoriginalconveyordriveswereauniquecombinationofcomponentsincludingACmotors,planetarygearboxesandpulleysmountedbetweenthecarryingandreturnstrandsofbelt.Sinceoriginalequipmentmanufacturerspartswerenolongeravailableandsincetheconveyordriveswerenonstandard,BNSFwasforcedtocustombuildparts,anexpensiveandtimeconsumingprocess.EngineeringDesignServicesrecommendedRulmecaMotorizedPulleysbecause1theyarecompactandwouldfitwithinthereclaimersstructure,2RulmecaMotorizedPulleysandreplacementpartsarereadilyavailable,and3Rulmecahasalongsuccessfultrackrecordofsupplyingconveyordrivesforbucketwheelreclaimers.4.3OperatingDataAssummarizedinTable2,AllouezDock5consistsofan87acre0,3km2facilityproviding5.5milliontonsofstoragecapacityinastockpilearea3.5miles5,6kmfromthedockand72,000tonsofstorageinthedocksilos.Aconveyorsystem,5.7miles9,2kminlength,linksthe2railcarunloaders,the3stackerreclaimers,andtheshiploader.TaconitepelletsusuallyarriveinBNSFtrainsof150carseach35feet10,7mlongH1typeat1,800ft3513mcapacityandareloadedintospeciallakevessels.Upto185cartrainscanhaul20,000tonsoftaconitepellets,atagrosstrainweightof27,000tons.Wintertemperaturescanreach–30ºF34ºC.Typically,icedoesnotcoverallofLakeSuperior,butnearcompletesheetsofice,fromafewinchestoseveralfeetthick,doformintheharborareaofSuperiorandSt.LouisBays.AsearlyasmidNovemberandpersistingaslateasearlyMay,iceintheSootLocksortheharborendstheshippingseason.FrozenblocksofpelletscanbefoundinthestockpilesaslateasAugustandSeptember.The75BNSFemployeesatAllouezDock5unloaded537trainsor79,201carsin2003.4.4MotorizedPulleyExperienceEngineeringDesignServicesandRulmecaengineersfirstpresentedtheMotorizedPulleyupgradeconceptforthebucketwheelreclaimerstoBNSFpersonnelin1995,suggestingaDualDrivearrangementforthetailconveyorduetoitsrequirementof200HP150kW.AllouezDockhadbeenmaintainingthebucketwheelmachineswithouttheassistanceoftheoriginalequipmentmanufacturerformorethan10yearsin1995.However,thedualdriveconceptwasrelativelynewatthattimeandeightyearswouldelapsebeforethefirstbucketwheelreclaimerwasupgraded.By2003originalgearboxrebuildshadgottenveryexpensive.ThatyearthreeModel800HMotorizedPulleys,with31.5inch800mmdiameterand57inch1400mmfacewidthwerepurchased.BNSFoperationspersonnelinstalledthemin2004.EachMotorizedPulleyprovided120HP90kWatabeltspeedof768fpm4m/sonapowersupplyof460V/3ph/60Hz,generatedbythenewlyinstalledonboarddieselgenerator.ThecompactdesignminimizedstructuralmodificationsandgreatlysimplifiedtheNestedDualDriveconfigurationbeneaththetailconveyor.ThesuccessfulupgradeofthefirstmachineencouragedBNSFtoupgradeasecondBucketWheelReclaimer,completedin2005,usingthree100HP75kWRulmecaMotorizedPulleys.ThethirdandfinalsetofMotorizedPulleyswasdeliveredJuly2006.EngineeringDesignServicesnotonlyassistedBNSFpersonnelwithinitialdesigntoinsureasmoothretrofit,RogerMeittunenalsotraveledtotheRulmecaMotorizedPulleyfactoryinGermanytoobservefinalassemblyofthefirstthreeMotorizedPulleysandobtainaftermarketservicetrainingontheModel800HunitstoinsurelongtermsuccessoftheMotorizedPulleysatAllouezDock.Fig.24,000TPHBucketWheelReclaimerinitssecondseasonafterthe2004MotorizedPulleyupgrade.NoteoneMotorizedPulleybeneaththeboomconveyorandtwounderthetailconveyor.
