Introduction

CongratulationsonyourpurchaseoftheExtech42280ThermometerandRelativeHumidityDatalogger.The42280isawall-mount,tripodmount,ordesktopindoorairqualitymonitorwithaninternalmemorycapableofstoring16,000readings(8000temperaturereadingsand8000relativehumidityreadings)thatcanlaterbetransferredtoPCusingtheUSBinterface.Real-timemeter-to-PCloggingisalsosupported.Thismeterisshippedfullytestedandcalibratedand,withproperuse,willprovideyearsofreliableservice.

Thismeterreliesonfirmbuttonpressestooperatecorrectly.Besuretopressfirmlyandholdthebuttonforaslongasdirectedintheinstructions.

MeterPower

Themeterispoweredbyfour(4)‘AA’1.5Vbatteriesorthe117VACadaptor.

WhenthebatteriesareinstalledortheadaptorisconnectedtoanACpowersource,momentarilypresstheSTART-STOPbuttontoturnthemeterON.

PresstheSTART-STOPbuttonagaintoturnthemeterOFF.

Viewingthedisplayedreadings

Normally,thetoplineindicatestemperatureindegreesCorF.UsetheMODEbuttontoswitchbetweendegreesCanddegreesF.

PressandholdtheMODEforatleast2seconds.ThiswillchangethetopdisplaytoDewPointtemperature.The‘DP’iconwillappearontheLCDwheninDewPointmode.PressandholdtheMODEbuttonforatleast2secondstoreturnthetopdisplaytothenormaltemperaturedisplaymode.

ThemiddlelinedisplaysRelativeHumidityin%.

ThebottomlineautomaticallyalternatesbetweenTimeandDatedisplays.

IftheALMstatusLEDilluminatesandthedisplayflashes,oneoftheAlarmlimitshasbeenreached.ProgramtheHighandLowTemperature/HumiditylimitsinProgrammingparameterP5(detailedlaterinthisuserguide).

DataloggerBasics

TheModel42280hasabuilt-inDataloggerthatcanstoreupto8000temperatureand8000humidityreadings.ReadingscanbestoredinthemeterandtransferredatalatertimetoaPC.Themetercanalsodisplayreal-timereadingsonaconnectedPC;inotherwords,thePCcandisplayreadingsattheinstantthereadingsaretaken.

Themetermustbeconfiguredbeforedataloggingcanbeattempted.ParameterssuchasRealTimeClockandDataloggerSampleRatemustbeprogrammedbeforedataloggingcanbegin.Itisstronglyrecommendedthattheusertakeadvantageofthesuppliedsoftwaretoconfigurethemeter.Instructionsformanuallyconfiguringthemeterareprovidedbelow;howeverconfiguringthemeterviasoftwareisveryconvenient.

BasicinstructionsforconnectingthemetertoaPCandgettingstartedwiththesuppliedsoftwareareprovidedlaterinthisguide.DetailedinstructionsregardingthesuppliedsoftwareareprovidedinaseparatemanualincludedonthesuppliedCD-ROMandtheHELPutilityinthesoftwareprogram.

TheModel42280hasseveralprogrammingmodes(P1,P2,P3,P4,P5,andP6).TheseparametersmustbeprogrammedbeforetheDataloggerortheAlarmcanbeused.

Datalogging

StartingaDataloggingsession

The42280canautomaticallystoreupto16,000readings(8000temperatureand8000humidity)forlatertransfertoPC.Programthecontroller,asdiscussedearlier,beforeDatalogging.IftheDataloggerhasnotbeenconfiguredatthispoint,configureasnecessary.Ifprogrammingiscomplete,continuewiththenextsection.

StartingtheDataloggerbypush-button(KeyMode)

ProgrammingmodeP2(DataloggingStartModes)mustbesettoKEY(hEy)modeforthismethod.

WhenP2issetto‘hEy’,pressandholdtheSTART-STOPbuttonfor2seconds.

TheRECfront-panelstatuslightwillblinkindicatingthatreadingsarecurrentlyrecordingattherateprogrammedinparameterP4(samplerate)

Tostoprecording,pressandholdtheSTART-STOPbuttonforatleast2seconds.TheRECstatuslightwillstopblinking.

StartingtheDataloggerinImmediateMode

ProgrammingmodeP2(DataloggingStartModes)mustbesetto‘Imm’modeforthismethod.

Whentheprogrammingmodeisexited,Dataloggerautomaticallybegins.

TheRECfront-panelstatuslightwillblinkindicatingthatreadingsarecurrentlyrecording.

Tostoprecording,pressandholdtheSTART-STOPbuttonforatleast2seconds.TheRECstatuslightwillstopblinking.

StartingtheDataloggerinScheduleMode

InScheduleModethemeterbeginsrecordingataspecificdateandtime,asprogrammedbytheuser.

ProgrammingmodeP2(DataloggingStartModes)mustbesetto‘SCh’modeforthismethod.

AftersettingP2to‘SCh’,setthedesiredtimeanddateinProgrammingModeP3(P3onlyappearsinthemenuwhen‘SCh’isselectedinP2.

Dataloggingwillstartattheprogrammeddateandtime.NotethattheRealTimeClock(ProgrammingModeP6)mustfirstbesettothecurrentdateandtime.

Whendataloggingbegins,theRECfront-panelstatuslightwillblinkindicatingthatreadingsarecurrentlyrecordingattherateprogrammedinparameterP4(samplerate)

Tostoprecording,pressandholdtheSTART-STOPbuttonforatleast2seconds.TheRECstatuslightwillstopblinking.

StartingtheDataloggerinRepeatMode

InRepeatModethemetersimplybeginsdataloggingagainafterreadingsaredownloadedtoaPC.Thisallowstheusertomaintainthesameprogrammingselectionstimeaftertime.DataloggingisindicatedbytheflashingREClightasdescribedintheotherStartModesabove.

ConnectingtheMetertoaPC

AUSBcableisprovidedwiththemeter.Oneendofthecableconnectstothemeter’sUSBjackandtheotherendconnectstoaUSBportonthePC.

RunningthesuppliedPCsoftware

ThesuppliedPCsoftwareisincludedonthesuppliedCD-ROM.InserttheCDintothecomputer’sCD-ROMdriveandfollowtheon-screenpromptsandinstructions.InthesoftwareCOMPORTSETTINGfield,selecttheCOMporttowherethemeterisconnected.

SoftwareDataloggingParameters

Fromthemainsoftwarescreen,selectLOGGERSETandsetthesamplerate,samplepoints,andstartmode.ThesearedescribedinsomedetailintheseparatesoftwaremanualandthesoftwareHELPutilityonthesuppliedCD-ROM.Remembertopress‘OK’afterchangingasettingtoensurethatthesoftwareprocessesthechanges.Themeterisnowreadytorecord.

TransferringreadingstoPC

Connectandrunthesuppliedsoftwareaspreviouslydescribed.

PresstheDOWNOADSTARTbuttononthemainsoftwarescreentotransferthereadings.

Theseparatesoftwareinstructionssuppliedinthesoftware’sHELPutilityexplainhowtoview,graph,save,exportandprintthedownloadeddata.

HumidityCalibration

Turnonthemeterandplugthehumiditysensorprobeintothe33%CalibrationReferencebottle.

SimultaneouslypressandholdtheSTART-STOPandtheSETbuttonsforatleast2secondstoenterthe33%Calibrationmode.Thedisplay’32.8%’willbegintoflashonthedisplay.

Approximately30minuteslater,the’32.8%’displaywillstopflashing,indicatingthatthe33%calibrationiscomplete

Plugthehumiditysensorprobeintothe75%CalibrationReferencebottle.

PressandholdtheSTART-STOPbuttonforatleast2secondstoenterthe75%Calibrationmode.Thedisplay’75.3%’willbegintoflashonthedisplay.

Approximately30minuteslater,thedisplaywillstopflashing,indicatingthattheentirecalibrationiscomplete.Themeterwillautomaticallyreturntothenormaloperatingmode
