Hersheys candies were still Americans favorites. But the company was in fierce competition with Mars, the maker of Milky Way, Snickers, and M&Ms. Hersheys leaders wanted to create something new. Hershey decided to build on the success of its Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. Their idea was to create a candy like M&Ms, but with peanut butter in the center instead of chocolate. At first, the peanut butter caused the candy shell to become greasy (油腻的 ). Finally, Hersheys scientists created a mixture of peanuts and sugar that was smooth and tasty and could be put inside a thin candy covering. The new candy, Reeses Pieces, was introduced in 1978. Sales were strong at first but soon sagged. Would Hersheys newest candy fail? Then came an offer from Hollywood. Universal Pictures was creating a new movie about a lovely alien E.T. who is left on Earth. He is befriended by an 8-year-old boy named Elliott, who uses some candies to make E.T. come into the safety of his home. In the original script (剧本), that candy was M&Ms. But Mars refused to cooperate (合作). And so Universal called Hershey and offered them the chance to have Reeses Pieces appear in the 1982 movie. Hersheys leaders were worried that if the movie failed, and Reeses Pieces might never recover. But in the end they said yes, and the movie was a big hit. Almost overnight, Reeses Pieces became one of Americas most famous candies. Today, Reeses Pieces is one of the top-10 best-selling candies in America. And for that, Hershey can thank a cute little alien. 64. Why did Hersheys leaders want to create something new? A. To replace their old products. B. To make their chocolates internationally famous. Over the past few months, beekeepers in Ribeauvill, a town located in the Alsace region, have noticed that bees there have been making honey in many strange colors. Bees have been returning to apiaries (places where bees are kept and honey is made) with different colors coating their bodies. The colors then end up polluting the honey. A recent survey showed that a nearby M&Ms factory (a candy bar company) is behind the change in color. Waste from the factory has been exposing the bees to a number of chemicals. Some of the chemicals are used in the outer shells of the bite-size candies, which come in many bright colors. The local beekeepers do not know if the polluted honey is dangerous to eat, but they are not taking any chances. They are throwing away the candy-colored honey, which means a big loss to local businesses. “For us, its not honey,” Alain Frieh, leader of the towns beekeepers union, tells Reuters news agency. The honey industry in this part of France has been suffering this year. According to Frieh, many bees died last winter or were unable to make honey because of the bad weather conditions. This new problem of colored honey is hurting the beekeepers way of life even more. The region is home to about 2,400 beekeepers and 35,000 groups of bees. The beekeepers harvest about 1,000 tons of honey each year
