Author: Richard Connell,A prolific writer in the first several decades of the 20th century. He was born on Oct. 17, 1893, in a New York state community near the Hudson River. Throughout his career, he variously wrote novels, plays and short stories.,II. A General Introduction,Importance of the work,(1924) winning the OHenry Memorial Prize, the top short story prize in America Included as a classic into American primary school and high school textbooks and the worlds best short fiction anthologies Adapted into a dozen of films- the latest one: Lethal Woman (1998); the best-known one: The Most Dangerous Game (1932),Best-remembered and most-studied, One of the worlds best short stories,The story is often used by teachers in the U.S.A. to illustrate the important features of good fiction: a dramatic plot, vivid characterization and beautiful description.,2. Introduction to the text,A remote island near Bermuda Triangle From the noon of the first day to the night of the third day Zaroff: a Cossack general in Czarist Russia. Avid hunter of big game. Trying to seek excitement and pleasure from hunting the most dangerous game in the world: man Rainsford: a famous American big-game hunter, to whom the world is made up of two classes: the hunters and the hunted Ivan: the giant and strong assistant of Zaroff,2. The plot: 1)The beginning: ”invitation” of the hunting game at noon on the first day 2)Development: The rounds of the game Round one: Zaroff can easily kill Rainsford and end the game, but he decides to save Rainsford for anther day. Round two: Rainsford scores a point. Zaroff is slightly injured. Round three: Zaroff loses his best hound. Round four: Zaroff loses Ivan.,3)The conflict: the battle of wits between the hunter and the hunted 4)The climax: On the night of the third day, Rainford is being chased by the approaching hounds and Zaroff, he has no choice but to leap far out into the sea 5)The resolution: Zaroffs death. (Para. 13),One foolish fellow tried to escape through the Death Swamp, and he was killed by the quicksand. But the sad thing was that one of my finest hounds followed him there and was devoured by the quicksand. (Pay attention to the different attitudes Zaroff had for the loss of a man and a dog. For the man, he considered it a foolish behaviour, whereas for the hound, a lamentable thing.),General Zaroff, with a deep courtly bow, strolled from the room. (Para. 14),Rainsford had fought his way through the bush for two hours. “I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve,” he said through tight teeth. (Para. 15),Rainsford had run for his life through the bush for two hours. “I must keep calm and act wisely or I would be caught,” he said with his teeth clenched because of nervousness.,He had not been entirely clear-headed when the chateau gates snapped shut behind him. His whole idea at first was to put distance between himself and General Zaroff. He had plunged along, spurred on by a sharp feeling of panic. (Para. 16),He couldnt think clearly and wisely when the gates were shut with a loud sound. At first the only thing he wanted to do was to get as far away as possible from Zaroff. He had moved quickly, driven by a feeling of extreme fear.,But now he had got a grip on himself, had stopped, and was taking stock of himself and the situation. (Para. 16),Now he calmed down, had stopped the blind running for life, and was making an appraisal of himself and the situation.,He saw the straight flight was futile; inevitably it would bring him face to face with the sea. He was in a picture with a frame of water, and his operations, clearly must take place within that frame. (Para. 17),He realized the straight escape was useless; of course it would make him face the sea. He was surrounded by the sea, and as a result all his actions must be carried out within the frame of water.,He executed a series of intricate loops; he doubled on his trail again and again. (Para. 18),He moved round and round many times and after that he covered the same trail repeatedly so as to confuse Zaroff.,“I have played the fox,” he thought, “now I must play the cat.” after a fashion, rested. (Para. 18),Rainsford said to himself that he has done enough running and now should hide up in a tree.,Rainsfords impulse was to hurl himself down like a panther, but he saw that the generals right hand held something metallica small automatic pistol. (Para. 20),Rainsfords first reaction was to jump upon General Zaroff and take his chances, but then he was checked by the sight of the pistol in the generals right hand.,The pent-up air burst hotly from Rainsfords lungs. (Para. 22),Rainsfords second thought was even more terrible. It sent a shudder of cold horror through his whole being. (Para. 23),After a second thought, Rainsford realized the situation was not what he had thought. And it made him tremble all over.,Following the trail with the sureness of a bloodhound came the general. (Para. 27),The sentence is used in inverted order. He has read books about hunting that were written in English, French and Russian. He hums a tune from an opera. He lives in a well decorated Chateau (oaken panels, high ceiling, vast refectory table). He serves a sophisticated, refined meal to Rainsford.,Connell uses direct characterization to develop Zaroff,Zaroff is either evil or animalistic thick black eyebrows and pointed black moustache black, bright eyes dead black eyes (para. 23) curious, red-lipped smile (para.18),Sanger Rainsford: An American hunter of world renown. He once cruised in the Caribbean Sea on a moonless night, fell into the sea. He found himself a captive of General Zaroff. Rainsford doesnt view hunting animals as murder. He says animals dont understand fear. He says that Zaroff is a murderer because he hunts people.,Connell uses Indirect Characterization to develop Rainsford,1. Rainsford is an excellent hunter 2. Rainsford has written a book about hunting. 3. Rainsford recognizes the cartridge that he picks up as that of a twenty-two caliber gun. 4. Rainsford sets traps for Zaroff. 5. Rainsford is the only person to survive the game with Zaroff.,Zaroff is motivated by the desire to be challenged in the hunt,Animals had ceased to challenge him. Rainsford had presented the best challenge yet.,Rainsford is motivated by the desire to stay alive,If Zaroff catches him he will be killed.,Rainsford is a dynamic character,At the beginning he believes that animals dont feel any fear. Once he is hunted and feels fear he says he knows how animals feel. When he confronts Zaroff at the end Rainsford tells Zaroff that he is still a beast at bay - he has adopted an animal mentality.,Ivan: The deaf and dumb assistant to General Zaroff. He is extremely large and seems to enjoy torturing and murdering helpless captives. He dies as the result of one of Rainsfords traps.,Connells tone is straightforward and non-judgmental,Connell doesnt show bias toward Rainsford or Zaroff. He doesnt judge Zaroffs game or Rainsfords opinion of hunted animals. He doesnt comment on the events of the story.
