Text 1Mr Bean is an internationally recognised comedy character on TV and in films. He constantly gets into awkward and absurd situations, which greatly amuses audiences regardless of their nationality or culture. The humour is always made clear through a series of simple and funny acts that rely purely on body language, which is universal. One of my favourite shows has Mr Bean in a fancy restaurant. After being seated at his table, Mr Bean takes out a card, writes a few words on it, seals it in an envelope and places it on the table. After a moment, he looks back at the envelope but this time he looks surprised, as if he did not know it was there. He opens it to find a birthday card and delightedly puts it on the table for everyone to see.,recognised adj.公认的comedy/kmIdi/n.喜剧comedian/kmidin/n. 荒唐的amuse v逗笑,逗乐regardless of不管,不顾a series of一系列的series单复数同形。purely/pjli/adv.完全地,仅仅rely on (count on)依赖,依靠universal/junIvsl/adj. seal/sil/vt.封,密封as if(as though)好像,引导方式状语从句。 to find . delightedly adv. When he looks at the menu, an astonished look swiftly appears on his face. He takes all the money out of his wallet, counts it and puts it in a saucer. He then looks from the menu to the money with concern until he finds one thing that makes him smile. Then he orders a dish called “steak tartare”. When the dish arrives, he is shocked to discover that “steak tartare” is actually raw hamburger. He makes an attempt to eat it, but it is clear from the look on his face that he finds the taste truly disgusting. He cannot hide his feelings, except when the waiters ask if everything is all right. When this happens, he smiles and nods, indicating that everything is fine. astonished adj. 令人十分惊讶的astonish/stnI/vt. 迅速地,立刻地saucer/ss/n. called . steak tartare/steIktt/鞑靼牛肉末raw/r/adj.生的,未煮过的make an attempt to do sth.试图做某事It is clear that .“明显的是”,it为形式主语。 disgusting/dIsgstI/adj. When the waiters are not looking, however, he busies himself hiding the raw meat anywhere he can reach the sugar bowl, the tiny flower vase, inside a bun and under a plate. He becomes so desperate in the end that he even hides some inside the purse of a woman sitting near him and throws some down the trousers of the restaurants violinist!I like to watch Mr Bean on TV but I wouldnt want to meet someone like him in real life and I certainly wouldnt want to have dinner with him!,busy oneself (in/with) doing sth. desperate/desprIt/adj. 或to do sth.,表示“非常需要”。so . that . Text 2Rowan Atkinson is the actor who plays Mr Bean. In Britain, Mr Atkinson is quite famous for many other wonderful characters that he has created but internationally, he is best known for the dizzy, awkward, clumsy, but always amusing Mr Bean. If you think that Rowan Atkinson is anything like his famous creation, then you are in for a surprise.Rowan was born on January 6, 1955, and spent his early years on the family farm with his mother, three older brothers and his strict father, who did not believe in the value of television. For a time, he attended the same school as Tony Blair, who was two years older than him. At 13, Rowan earned a scholarship to a boarding school. Later, he studied at Newcastle University where he had the highest marks in his year. At Oxford, he obtained his Masters degree in electrical engineering. This might explain his interest in fast cars, of which he has a vast collection.be famous for .因而出名be well known for .因而出名be famous/well known as作为而出名dizzy adj. 令人发笑的anything like有点儿像be in for肯定会经历,注定要遭受go in for参加,从事,对感兴趣believe in相信,信任,信赖attend v定期去(学校、教堂等);出席,参加attendance n出席,参加the same . as . Rowans career change from an electrical engineer to a famous comedian was partly due to some speaking problems he had in his childhood. He compensated for this by talking very deliberately. This may have inspired the abnormal speech patterns of many of his characters. While still at primary school, Rowan had already shown admirable acting talent. Although his teachers predicted a career in acting, Rowan was not convinced himself, until he met a group of talented people at university, who were involved in theatre, and he realised this could be a career for him. Another key event occurred when, one day in 1976, he was playing around and pulling faces in the mirror. He realised something. “I discovered my face,” he said later. John Lloyd, who worked for the BBC, says, “It was one of those things which happen very rarely in your life, when you realise you are in the presence of genius. I was convinced he would be more famous than Chaplin.”partly/ptli/adv.部分地due to由于,因为he had in his childhood为定语从句。compensate/kmpnseIt/vt. 从容不迫地;故意地inspire v激励;促成inspire sb. to do sth. 值得赞赏的predict v预言,预测convince/knvIns/vt.使相信使某人相信be involved in参与,从事play around四处游戏pull faces做鬼脸rarely/reli/adv.很少,难得presence/prezns/n.存在;到场,出席in the presence of sb.在某人面前,有某人在场in the presence of sth.存在的情况,有的存在genius/dinis/n.天才be convinced (that) . PrereadingPlease match the words with their proper meanings.1resistAto accept that sth.is true2figure Bready to do anything regardless of danger3acknowledge Cto cause great surprise in sb.4scold Da person of the type mentioned5forbid Eto refuse to accept sth.and try to stop it from happening6desperate Fto get sth., especially by making an effort7astonish Gto some extent; not completely8obtain Hto make sb. feel certain9partly Ito speak angrily to sb.especially a child, because they have done sth. wrong10convince Jto order sb.not to do sth.; to order that sth.must not be done15_610_答案:15EDAIJ610BCFGHLeadinDo you know the man in the picture? What can I do?” The operator says, “Dont worry.First, make sure hes dead.” There is a silence. Then a shot is heard.Bang! The hunters voice comes back on the line: “OK, now what?” This is perhaps slightly amusing.Culturally, it depends on us knowing that often hunters are not considered to be very intelligent people, and that often they are quite violent. But perhaps this is not so all over the world. Its quite a “black” joke. The experts also found the second funniest joke: Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson go on a camping trip. After dinner, they go to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes wakes up.“Watson, what do you see?” “Millions of stars,” replies Watson.“And what do you infer from that?” “Well, there are billions of planets .We are a small part of the universe .We will have a beautiful day tomorrow . ”“Watson, you idiot (笨蛋)! Someone has stolen our tent!”I personally think this is better.Understanding this joke, however, depends on us knowing who Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are. It has an unexpected ending something that is very important and necessary for most jokes.Surprise can be funny.Whats funny on the Earth? Scientists are excellent at studying complicated (复杂的) things. Some things are much too complicated, even for the most intelligent thought. 1.It is difficult to find the funniest joke in the world because _.Athere are too many jokes to choose fromBthose experts cannot agree with each otherCpeople across the world create new jokes every dayDpeoples standards of what is funny are not the same解析:选D细节理解题。 2In the authors opinion, the first joke _.Ais really funny and amusingBis not as funny as those experts thoughtCshows peoples wrong understanding of huntersDtells readers never to look down on brave hunters解析:选B推理判断题。 3Which of the following influences the understanding of a joke most?AThe readers mood.BThe readers cultural background.CThe characters style of language.DThe number of funny points in the joke. 4In most cases, the completely necessary point of a joke is _.Aa result beyond expectationBthe mention of great peopleCextremely funny behaviorDthe use of special phrases解析:选A细节理解题。 BKuringai Chase National Park Guided Walks and Nature ActivitiesSUNDAY MAY 7 EASYEarly Morning Walk in Upper Lane Cove ValleyMeet at 7:30 am at the end of Day Rd, Cheltenham while the bush is alive with birdsong.Round trip: 4 hoursFRIDAY MAY 12 MEDIUMPossum ProwlMeet at 7:30 pm in Seaforth Oval car park.Enjoy the peace of the bush at night.Lovely water views.Bring a torch (手电筒) and wear sports shoes as some rock climbing involved.Coffee and biscuits supplied.Duration (持续时间): 2 hoursSUNDAY JUNE 4 HARDBairne/Basin TrackMeet at 9:30 am on Track #8, West Head Road.
