Unit 4 Pygmalion. AAt thirteen, I was diagnosed (诊断) with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.In my first literature class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said,“Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.”She glanced down at me through her glasses,“You are no different from your classmates, young man.”I tried, but I didnt finish the reading when the bell rang.I had to take it home.In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldnt get much education. But Louis didnt give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots (点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.Wasnt I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?I didnt expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs.Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next daywith an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words:“See what you can do when you keep trying?”1The author didnt finish the reading in class because _.Ahe was new to the classBhe was tired of literatureChe had an attention disorderDhe wanted to take the task home2What do we know about Louis Braille from the passage?AHe had good sight.BHe made a great invention.CHe gave up reading.DHe learned a lot from school.3What was Mrs. Smiths attitude to the author at the end of the story?AAngry.BImpatient.CSympathetic. DEncouraging.4What is the main idea of the passage?AThe disabled should be treated with respect.BA teacher can open up a new world to students.COne can find his way out of difficulties with efforts.DEveryone needs a hand when faced with challenges.【语篇导读】本文讲述了作者上学时的个人经历。 At thirteen,I was diagnosed with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me.When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks,I could not. But Louis didnt give up.Instead,he invented a reading system of raised dots, which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind. At the bottom of the paper were these words:“See what you can do when you keep trying?” BLife can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy. It can also be full of challenges, setbacks (挫折) and heartbreaks.Whatever our circumstances, we generally still have dreams, hopes and desiresthat little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones. Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns and pitfalls (陷阱) that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place. This tension between what we feel we can have and what were seemingly able to have is the niggling (烦人的) suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think its easier to just give up. But were never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is usthe real us. Its the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little “dead” inside because youre dropping “you”So, if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through todays challenges. While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mindor the minds of those close to ususually says we cant. That isnt a reason to stop, its just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. Its all about starting simple and doing it now.Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large,release_from_the_jail_of_your_mind and youll be on your way.5It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should _.Aslow down and live a simple lifeBbe careful when we choose to changeCstick to our dreams under any circumstancesDbe content with what we already have6What is the key to breaking the old patterns?ATo focus on every detail.BTo decide and take immediate action.CTo listen to those close to us.DTo think twice before we act.7Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?AEscape from your punishment.BRealization of your dreams.CFreedom from your tension.DReduction of your expectations.8What does the author intend to tell us?AIts easier than we think to get what we want.BIts important to learn to accept sufferings in life.CIts impractical to change our way of thinking.DIts harder than we expect to follow a new course.【语篇导读】本文介绍我们生活中除了一帆风顺还会有挫折与失败,如何突破这种困境呢? Its all about starting simple and doing it now. Decide and act before overthinking. the jail of your mind是一种比喻性说法,在本文中指代“想得太多”,即第二段首句中提到的tension(紧张状态),且C项中的“Freedom”与原文中的release对应。故选C项。8解析:选A。 Decide and act before overthinking. C(2017山东烟台模拟)The term “helicopter parents” refers to “a style of parents who are over focused on their children”Helicopter parents are always making a big push to provide children with every opportunity to succeed, from baby steps at age 1, homework at age 8, college application at age 18, employment issues at age 25 to family problems at age 30, 40 or even older. They constantly shadow the child, always directing his behavior, allowing him zero alone time.Helicopter parenting can develop for a number of reasons.Worries about the economy, the job market, and the world in general can push parents toward taking more control over their childs life in an attempt to protect them. Adults who felt unloved or ignored as children can overcompensate their own children. When parents see other overinvolved parents, it can cause a similar response. They feel that if they dont involve themselves in their childrens lives, they are bad parents. The main problem with helicopter parenting is that it can backfire. To give an example, the house where Mary lived with roommates was broken into and things were stolen. Mary called the landlord(房东)to install an alarm system, but before she could finish the negotiations(协商), her mother rushed in and demanded action. “I felt like my mother ruined my communication with our landlord. We could have gotten it done ourselves. She was well intended but only made me feel annoyed and defeated,”says Mary.Obviously, overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things but it does the exact opposite. In the long run parents are actually damaging their childs basic skills to deal with matters independently. It makes the child feel lacking in confidence, less competent in dealing with the stresses of life on their own. Theyre winning the battle, but actually losing the war.9Whats the purpose of helicopter parents overparenting?ATo do something good for their children.BTo make their children not ignored.CTo help their children find a good job.DTo get rid of the pressure from other parents.10What can we learn from the passage?AChildren who have helicopter parents live a hard life.BHelicopter parenting only happens to very young children.C. Helicopter parents can protect their children against all problems.DHelicopter parents do their children great harm in the long run.11What will possibly be discussed in the paragraph that follows?AThe bad effects of helicopter parenting.BHow we can avoid being helicopter parents.CDifferent opinions about helicopter parenting.DThe reasons for the development of helicopter parents.12What is the authors attitude towards “helicopter parenting”?AUninterested. BObjective.CPositive. 9解析:选A。 根据最后一段第一句“Obviously,overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things .” D(2017河南天一大联考)500 dog owners played the same games at home that researchers use in the laboratory and contributed data to a study of what goes on inside the minds of their dogs.In one of the games, the dogs watched as their owners hid food under one of two cups. Then while the dogs eyes were covered, the owner switched the food to the other cup. And the owners found that most dogs went to where they last saw the food. The result has been repeated in seven different research groups and more than a dozen different studies.“Most people think dogs use their sense of smell for everything,” a researcher said.“But actually dogs use a whole range of senses when solving problems.”The data were collected through a website called Dognition. com that was developed by Brian Hare, an associate professor who studies dog cognition(认知)Analysis of the unusually large data set created by Dognition. com has also found that all dogs have a unique set of cognitive (认知的)skills that they use to deal with the world around them. Some dogs were found to be good communicators, some had better memories and others were better at taking their owners perspective.“Most people think of intelligence as a glass that is more or less full,”Hare said.“But intelligence is more like ice cream. Everybody has different flavors. Being good at one thing doesnt mean you will be good at everything else.”Hare said these kinds of findings were only possible with the big data sets that citizen scientists were able to offer.“So much is possible when you have this much data,”Hare said.“Im looking forward to dog owners answering all the big questions that have puzzled scientists for decades.”13What did most dogs use to find the hidden food in the test?AMemory. BFeeling.CEars. DNose.14Dog owners actively participated in the research _.Ato entertain themselvesBto test the IQ of their dogsCto train their dogs to be more intelligentDto help find out dogs problem solving skills15What can we infer from what Hare said?AIntelligence is unique to man and dogs.BDogs use the same cognitive skill to handle problems.CThere is still something about dogs puzzling scientists.DDogs use a whole range of senses when solving problems.16What is the main idea of the passage?ADogs are not as clever as expected.BCitizens contribute a lot to dog research.CAt home tests produce findings different from laboratories.DProblems which puzzled scientists for decades have been solved.【语篇导读】本文为记叙文。 13解析:选A。 根据第二段最后一句“.most dogs went to where they last saw the food.” 但与题干中的“.from what Hare said”不符,故被排除。 A项文中并未提及;第一段介绍了500名养狗人用研究人员在实验室中所用的方法在家里给狗做实验,但并未提及在家里做的实验结果与在实验室做的研究结果不同,故排除C项;根据最后一段“Im looking forward to dog owners answering all the big questions that have puzzled scientists for decades.” .七选五iPads vs. TextbooksWhat if you could have your whole backpack at the touch of your fingertips? In the first month of the iPads release, 25 million were sold! People all over the world use iPads for all sorts of different things, but one of their finest qualities is the ability to be a textbook._1_To begin with, iPads are less expensive. Textbooks become outdated and schools have to buy new books, but with an iPad schools can update them for free._2_Schools dont have to spend $500 every year for iPads because they last a while and can be updated.3_Students usually have multiple classes, which results in multiple textbooks. Heavy backpacks filled with books can cause back problems. A solution to that is an iPad, which only weighs 1.33 pounds and can hold all of a students textbooks.Third, schools should get rid of their textbooks and get iPads because they have more capabilities. Some might think all of the apps are distracting, but the apps actually make iPads more efficient._4_Textbooks cannot do those tasks, but iPads can easily do them with just a tap of the fingertip.Lastly, iPads are a better choice for schools instead of textbooks because these devices allow students to access their learning any
