After months and months of excruciating pain for the patient and hard work for my team and I, the end result would always be rewarding. The patient would have his or her desired face and I would have yet another successful record under my belt. However, there was one case, where the end result wasnt so pretty. It was at the beginning of my career. I had just graduated from medical school and I yearned to be a plastic surgeon. Not only because of the big fat paycheck that I would receive once every month, but the thought of helping people change their lives for the better was all too tempting. I wasnt a saint, but I wanted to feel the satisfaction I get from seeing my patients enjoying their lives after having plastic surgery. Think about the freedom, attention and happiness they would get! Thus, I furthered studies and worked hard to become a plastic surgeon. Years of studying paid off when I was accepted as an apprentice to a well-known doctor, Dr. Wong. He was a respectable man, famous for being the most focused, skilled and meticulous man in the business. Though he had a near-celebrity status, he was always polite and patient and never let anyone down. He taught me many things and I absorbed them like sponge absorbed water. I was very eager to perform my first surgery but he always reminded me to be patient.My big break came when Dr. Wong announced that I was good enough to handle things on my own. My first patient, Andrea, was a petite young lady who felt inferior because of a too-prominent nose on her small face. I carefully examined her and explained to her the procedures of the surgery. I felt very confident of this and thought that nothing could possibly go wrong. It was just a minor nose job to me. I was burning with anticipation but I didnt realize that what felt so minor to me was a whole different thing for Andrea. Not only would she have a new nose, she would gain a whole new life. It would affect the way people thought of her and it would change her future and desires. I didnt step into Andreas shoes and that was a huge mistake. The moment I picked up my surgery tools, my hands started trembling and my heart took tumultuous leaps of fear. I thought I was confident, but I was wrong. I underestimated this surgery and from the beginning to the end, things started getting worse and worse. Carelessness, overconfidence, impatience and rashness from me and insecurity and nervousness from Andrea resulted in a devastating disaster. I had ruined her face, forever. Nothing could be done to correct the damage I had caused her. Even when Dr. Wong tried to touch up the evidence of my inexperience with his expertise, he could only make it look slightly better. Just with one careless move and her future crumbled in my guilty hands. How could I have done such damage? I asked myself every minute after the failed operation. Every now and then, tears of guilt and regret streamed down my sunken cheeks. Andrea didnt blame me, as she claimed that she was used to having an unattractive nose, but I knew that wasnt the truth. Deep down, she was hurt, so much more than me. Her hopes for a better life vanished into thin air with a horrendously scarred nose. The awkward stares she received when she walked down the streets dampened her confidence till there was almost none left. I wanted to make it up to her so badly, but she refused to blame me. That was the worst part.From that horrible experience, I had never dared to touch a surgery knife again. My world was shrouded with gloom and I was feeling so down and useless. Why would I want to risk another persons life with my incompetence? I rejected all potential patients and stopped working. Dr. Wong was disappointed in me and came forward to encourage me. I could never forget his words.“You have to pick yourself up from where you fell. Living in guilt would not compensate her for her pain in any way. You have to prove yourself to me, Andrea and all your future patients that need your help desperately. Imagine all the people longing for a surgery right now. They would be so glad if you could help them, and I know you want to. Come on, this wouldnt be as hard as you think. Take one step at a time and I know that you can achieve great things. Just remember what you did wrong the last time and never do it again. Have faith in yourself!”Thinking through his words, I was deeply motivated. What he said was true and I was going to prove to everyone that I can become the great plastic surgeon that I always dreamt I was. I was going to turn my dream into reality. I got to work. Whenever I tried picking up my tool, my whole body seemed to be paralyzed with fear. I took months of practice to finally overcome it. Slowly but surely, I was gaining confidence everyday.
