theatres, its shops and restaurants. the tourists do not, however, see pompeiis people. they do not see them because pompeii has no people. no one has lived in pompeii for almost 2000 years.once, pompeii was a busy city of 22000 people. it lay at the foot of mount vesuvius, a grass-covered volcano. mount vesuvius had not erupted for centuries, so the people of pompeii felt safe. but they were not.in august of ad 79, mount vesuvius erupted. the entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. soon stones and hot ash began to fall on pompeii. when the eruption ended two days later, pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes. almost all of its people were dead.for centuries, pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. then, in the year 1861, an italian scientist named ginseppe began to uncover pompeii. slowly, carefully, ginseppe and his men dug. the city looked almost the same as it had looked in ad 79. there were streets and fountains, houses and shops. there was a stadium with 20000 seats. perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in pompeii. many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom, so we know that the people of pompeii liked wine. they liked bread, too; metal bread pans were in every bakery. in one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread. a type of bread that is still sold in italy today. tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup.ginseppe has died, but his work continues. one-fourth has not been uncovered yet. scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to pompeii.21. why do large numbers of people come to pompeii each year?a. to visit the volcano.b. to shop and eat there.c. to watch sports and plays.d. to see how pompeiians lived.22. why had so many pompeiians remained by volcanic mount vesuvius?a. the city nearby offered all kinds of fun.b. the area produced the finest wine in italy.c. few people expected the volcano to erupt again.d. the mountain was beautiful and covered with grass.23. why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in ad 79?a. because ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully.b. because the city was buried alive and remained untouched.c. because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects.d. because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted.24. what do we know about the pompeiians who lived 2000 years ago?a. they lived more or less the same as italians now do.b. they liked women wearing all kinds of makeup.c. they enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating.d. they went back to pompeii after the eruption in ad 79.bwe were late as usual. passengers waiting for flight lj 108 could get a free meal voucher (餐券) and that the plane hadnt left spain for technical problems. we thought that meant that it wasnt safe for the plane to fly. we waited again for a long time until late evening when we were asked to report again. this time we were given free vouchers to spend the night in a nearby hotel.the next morning after a bad night because of all the planes taking off and landing, we reported back to the airport. guess what had happened while we were asleep! our plane had arrived and taken off again. all the other passengers had preprogrammed electronics are rearranged(重新设置) in your shirt to change its color. looking into the mirror, you find it hard to believe that you are 40. you look much younger. with amazing advances in medicine, people in your generation may live to be 150 years old. youre not even middle-aged. as you go into the kitchen and prepare to pour your breakfast cereal(谷物) into a bowl, you hear: “to lose belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. however, this is not the case. no school i have ever taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. the problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities(复杂) of spelling.if spelling becomes the only focus of his teachers interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. he will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. thats why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.i was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience. “this work is terrible! there are far too many spelling errors and your writing is terrible.” it may have been a sharp criticism(批评) of the students technical abilities in writing, but it was also sad that the teacher had omitted(忽略) to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the childs deep feelings. the teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities(优先) had centered on the childs ideas, it would have given the student more motivation to seek improvement.33.the underlined expression “play safe”probably means “_”.a. to write carefullyb. to do as teachers sayc. to use dictionaries frequentlyd. to avoid using words he is unsure of 34.teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that _.a. students will be able to express their ideas more freelyb. students will have more confidence in writingc. teachers will have less trouble in correcting mistakesd. students will learn to be independent of teachers35.the major point discussed in the passage is _a. the importance of developing writing skillsb. the complexities of spellingc. the correct way of marking compositionsd. the relationship between spelling and the content
