Body language, like verbal language can express emotions, exchange ideas and deliver information. As everyone knows, the classroom teaching is one of the most important ways for students learning English. As far as the English teaching is concerned, teachers have to arouse the students interest so that they may learn better. There are many ways to arouse the students interest and help them to learn better, using body language in English teaching is one of them. In expressing some subtle ideas, body language can be a very good helper in English teaching. Besides, the teachers can have a better understanding about the students, their thoughts and their behaviors. Moreover, it helps the students to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing level, at the same time, the teachers and the students can develop a very good relationship. That is to say, body language can narrow the gap between the teachers and the students. The teachers should never ignore it in English teaching. Because not only it is a good tool to communicate with others and express oneself, but it can help the teachers achieve a higher teaching goal and further mutual understanding between the teachers and the students. Therefore, in English class, the teachers should pay enough attention to body language and properly use it. 3 Chapter Influences of Body Language in English Teaching Body language is an important media through which people communicate with each other. It refers to the patterns of facial expressions and gestures that people use to express their feelings in communication. For teachers are usually respected, and factually, what or how the teachers say and do will be possibly imitated by the students. So, teachers graceful body language helps to improve students artistic appreciation and moral characters. And teachers inappropriate body language brings a profound bad influence on teaching, especially English teaching. Because, to Chinese students, English is not our mother tongue. So using body language in English class can do a lot of helps to arouse their interests. 1.1 Appropriate Body Language Eye contact: Deliver useful information through eyes. As a saying goes, the eyes are the window of the soul. That is to say, we can read ones mind through his or her eyes. Students can get information through teachers eyes in class. For example, a teacher sees a student playing in class. The teacher says nothing and glares at the student until the student notice it. Then, the student stops playing and concentrate on studying. Facial expressions: show the expressions of love and belief.2 “The face has been called an organ of emotion because we constantly read facial expressions to understand what others are feeling. The face provides vital clues to our own feelings and those of the people around us. Of all the nonverbal channels, the face is the most important broadcaster of emotions.” A teacher teaches students with a smile, generally the students will demonstrate positive emotions. So the teacher can do better in teaching. Gestures: Teach with gestures timely. Without gestures, our world will be static and colorless. Sometimes teaching with gestures is colorful. For example, an English teacher wants to4teach a word basketball, then he tries to make a gesture of shooting. Not surprisingly, the students will get this word immediately. Postures: Create a comfortable teaching atmosphere. Factually, teachers who treat students as friends make a good job. They are good at using appropriate postures, students are willing to listen to them.1.2 Inappropriate Body Language Eye contact: Show a cold eye to the student who make a poor academic performance. What is the criterion of good and bad students? We dont know. But to some teachers, the result is the answer. Using inappropriate eye language will become a burden to students. Facial expressions: Teach with emotions outside the class. It not only affects the quality and process of teaching, but also give the students unnecessary confusion and fear. There is an experience of mine. A teacher of mine went out and picked up a phone during the class. When she came back, she looks unstable. As if the class couldnt go on. And I was at a loss. Thats a bad memory. Gestures: Messy gestures exist. Messy gestures will divert the attention of students and lead them to understand the deviation of the other issues. For example, a teacher likes to crack while teaching. What do you think of it? Postures: Sit while teaching. A teacher likes to sit on the chair in the whole class, what is your feeling? As far as I am concerned, I will regard the teacher as a lazy one. Maybe this teacher dont like to teach us. And then, I will lose interest in learning and feel regret to attend the teachers class. If students develop a wonderful body language, it will possibly leads them to form an optimistic and active feeling. They will surely have a more smooth interpersonal relation. The affection of teachers body language on the students is reflected not only by establishing a good example, but also shortening the teacherstudent estrangement by which a more harmonious studying atmosphere is created. As a matter of fact, teachers friendly appearance can great encourage students enthusiasm on study. Furthermore, the characteristics of theoretic and abstraction of knowledge also require the vivid, dramatic and accessible gestures to make it 5specific and figurative. As a result, students interest is motivated and the effect of teaching is greatly improved. As we know, body Language not only replenishes and deepens the verbal language, but also takes an unsubstitutive effect on the verbal language. If the teacher can use the body language accurately and proficiently to assist the teaching in the classroom, it can not only draw on the students attention, bring up their study interest, but also enable them the accurate understanding of language contents, deepen their impression. Because body language is a tool to communicate with others and express oneself, thereby the teachers should never ignore it in English teaching. In the process of teaching, body language can help the teachers achieve a higher goal. Moreover, the teachers and the students have a clearly understanding about each other. From the above we can learn, the use of body language in English teaching is necessary and practical. In the English teaching, body language is frequently used to improve the teaching effect and the students ability. Therefore, in English class, the teachers should pay enough attention to body language and properly use it.6Chapter Functions of Body Language in English Teaching As an old saying goes, interest are the best teacher. It is going to be painful that they work hard on academic course just because the teachers expect them to do so. The teachers have to stimulate the students, and the way teachers use to motivate them can be very important. If the teachers have passion in class, they can offer the students positive studying attitude. By using body languages, they can arouse students passion and desire in learning English. Furthermore, students English abilities and skills are improved.2.1 Body Language Helps to Improve Students Listening To understand others is a basic purpose in English teaching, and teachers often train the students listening. In this process, if the body 1anguage is used, the effect will be better. When beginning a new lesson, the teacher will summarize the text in English. At this time, body 1anguages may help. For example, a teacher can stretch his arms slowly when he says “It is very 1arge”. He can open his eye widely with his mouth opened when he says “it is so strange”. As aresult, the students will have such an impression: He is curious about something. A teacher who imitates the crying or the movement of the animals will surely achieve a better effect as well.2.2 Body Language Helps to Improve Students Speaking Spoken 1anguage is one of the most important ways to communicate, so students should try to develop their ability of speaking. Actually teachers body 1anguage can help them to reach the aim. Generally speaking, body language can arouse and sustain the students interest of 1earning and using English. In English classes, teachers should not only use body languages themselves, but also ask the students to use them according to the different situation. For example, when the new students first meet each other, and they dont know each other ever before. So a teacher can introduce himself first, such as: Hello, everyone, nice to meet you here. Now let me introduce myself to you. My name is , I like reading books, because reading makes one perfect. During 7the introduction, the teacher should use the new vocabularies and sentence structures to make a vivid expression and make gestures as possible as he can: smiles when he says hello to the class; shakes hands with some students saying Nice to meet you; writes name down on the blackboard when the name is told; imitates the action of turning pages to explain his hobby. After his introduction, the teacher can create a circumstance for the students to practice. After the students practice, greeting can be introduced naturally. Usually, the application of body 1anguage in different situations will result in an attracting and successful lesson.2.3 Body Language Helps to Improve Students Reading 0ne of the purposes of English teaching in college is to train and improve the students ability of using spoken English. Reading aloud is a basic subject in English study, and the teachers should make full use of body 1anguage to develop the students ability of reading aloud. When reading the sentences, the students should pay attention to where to speak softly, emphasize, and raise or lower out one. Generally speaking, teachers use falling tones in declarative and special interrogative sentence and use the first rising tones and falling tones in the choosing interrogative sentence. For example, as students read the choosing interrogative sentence, they raise their hands in rising tones and lower in falling tones. After training for some times, as soon as they read the sentences, they will remind themselves of the gestures. As a result, there will be no problems in rightly reading the sentences at all. In a word, the vivid gestures together with the fluent English can create a good circumstance of learning, which will surely play an active part in improving the students reading ability. 2.4 Body Language Helps to Improve Students Writing As we all know, writing is one of the four basic skills of learning language. Students get not only some English knowledge, but also the ability to communicate, to write. To get rid of students feelings of being dull and tiring in writing, the application of body language can deepen the objects impression and develop the students writing ability. The linguist Franklin ever said, “Tell me, Ill forget; teach me, Ill remember; involve me and Ill learn. ”8If students were asked to write an unfamiliar composition, they would probably be unable to and feel discouraged. And they can write excellent articles if they have the experience. Take “Talking about technology” for example, having enjoyed themselves on the internet by using computers, the students can write a better compositions. The students are deeply impressed by the body movement of the teachers and themselves which surely leads to a better effect. 9Chapter Forms of Body Language that Teachers Use Eyesight, expression, gesture and manner are the four key attributes of physical delivery, or body 1anguage. Body Language will help determine whether the teachers successfully gain and hold the students interest. Teachers graceful body 1anguage helps to improve the students artistic appreciation and moral character. So we should pay great attention to the Body Language research, for its importance in foreign 1anguage teaching. Body language is a kind of non-language, its a kind of communication which communicates by the speakers eyes, facial expression, gestures, posture, clothing to transmit information. In the class, teachers are not only the disseminators but also the directors. They should have a wealth of knowledge and language abilities. Body language can enhance the interest of students, strengthen the acceptance of the knowledge information, deepen the memory. The followings are some points of my view in the English teaching.3.1 Eyecontact Eye contact is the most important one of all. As everyone knows, eye is the window of someones heart. We can know what he doubts, how he loves or hates, whether he approves or disapproves, the luminosity, the gazing time, the changing frequency and so on. American social psychologist Michael Argyle found out, People who like each other have more eye-contact than people who dislike each other. The high 1evel of teaching is the exchange and the harmonization of the heart. People deeply believe that they can explore the heart world by the changing eyesight, such as the size of the eyes, the cooperation of the eye muscle, which can express innumerable feeling and attitude change. As a result, the teacher should give free rein to the function of eyesight and use the sight effectively. For example, if the students are still very exciting before class, the teacher can look around the whole class to attract their attention and also transfer the meaning that it is the class time. The foreign language educationists believe that teacher should look steadily at every student while having a class because it means love and equality to make the 10students realize the teachers valuable attention, which can raise their dynamic role of study. Furthermore, teachers should try to establish eye contact with the entire students, but should not just with the front row or only one or two students, or just stare at the student who is going to be asked, because it can not let all the students think about the question. He should have a balanced eyesight looks to the back and front and from side to side around the whole class. When the teacher finds someone is absent-minded or does anything else, he can still have his class, he can also give the student a kindly eyesight to attract his attention. Even when someone is 1ate for class. teachers can use the eyesight to hint that he can come into the classroom, in order to avoid dispersing the other students attention. In short, the loving and kind eyesight often get into the students memory along with the teaching contents. so the teachers good moral quality is deeply engraved on the students mind by such eyesight. So in class, the teachers should speak by watch
