Alan Kaufman has thought up the “Nubrella”, which means “new”+ “umbrella”. It is the first truly hands-free umbrella in the world. The inventor says that it stops rain, wind and snow and can keep your head, face and hair dry“I never planned to invent a product. I just noticed a problem and thought up a solution,” said the inventorThe idea for the invention began on one rainy day. Mr. Kaufman was standing in one of his stores. He began to look at peoples umbrellas. He found that they had to try very hard to keep their umbrellas in the right place. At that moment an idea came into his mind. He ran to his desk and drew a picture. In this way, the Nubrella was bornOne cool feature of the Nubrella is that you dont hold it like a usual umbrella, you wear it. The shoulder straps(肩带) of the Nubrella allow people to be fully hands-free, so when walking in the rain with the Nubrella, you are able to use your cell phone or drink a hot cup of coffee. Also, the Nubrella will never be inverted(颠倒) in the wind. The new umbrella is far safer than traditional ones, because it has no sharp points21. “Nubrella” is a kind of umbrella A. usual B. hands-free C. traditional D. paper22. Alan Kaufman often uses umbrellas in everyday life B. the new kind of umbrella was invented by an umbrella store owner C. the inventor thought for a long time before inventing the Nubrella D. you can do other things with your hands when using the Nubrella25. In writing this passage, the writer mainly intends(意图) to A. introduce this new kind of umbrella to people who are selling umbrellas B. tell the readers about a great inventor named Alan Kaufman C. tell the readers about a new invention that is very useful D. tell the readers that the inventor didnt want to invent anythingBOne day Kavya and I were playing tennis and the ball went into a mans house. Then we went to his house and asked if he could give us our ball. He said, “No”. We felt helpless. But suddenly we came up with an idea. There was a water tank(水箱) behind the mans house. I told Kavya, “We can climb onto the water tank and jump over the gate.” Kavya agreed, but we were both wearing skirts. We couldnt climb in those“We can get it back tomorrow,”said Kavya。The next day we went there with Kavyas brother Vijay. He said,“Shout loudly if you need me?” Kavya climbed onto the water tank first and then she climbed down into the mans house. I followed her. We were looking under a bed for the ball when we heard a noise. It was Vijay. Mother is calling you, he said in a low voice. We hurried out taking the lost ball with us. Along with the ball was a surprise! But we had to leave the house quickly. When we reached Kavya s house, the TV was on. It was news time. I couldnt believe my ears when it said that 20 gold bars were stolen from a gold shop. They showed a picture of the gold bars, which were exactly like the one we had seen in the man s house. We told the story to Kavya s mother right away, and she called the police. Soon the police caught the man. They found all the gold bars in his house. A few days later a policeman came to us and said, Thank you for helping us catch the guy. Here is a bag for all of you. Friendship is love with understanding.C In 1800, only three percent of the worlds population lived in cities. Only one city Beijing had a population of over a million. Most people lived in rural areas, and never saw a city in their lives. In 1900, just a hundred years later, roughly 150 million people lived in cities, and the worlds ten largest cities all had populations exceeding one million. By 2000, the number of city dwellers exceeded three billion; and in 2008, the worlds population crossed a tipping point more than half of the people on Earth lived in cities. By 2050, that could increase to over two-thirds. Clearly, humans have become an urban species. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many people viewed cities negatively crowded, dirty environments full of disease and crime. They feared that as cities got bigger, living conditions would worsen. In recent decades, however, attitudes have changed. Many experts now think urbanization (城市化) is good news, offering solutions to the problems of Earths growing population.Harvard economist Edward Glaeser, author of The Victory of the Cir, is one such person. Glaeser argues that cities are very productive because “the absence of space between people” reduces the cost of transporting goods, people, and ideas. While the flow of goods has always been important to cities, what is most important today is the flow of ideas. Successful cities enable people to learn from each other easily, and attract and reward smart people with higher wages.Another urbanization supporter is environmentalist Stewart Brand. Brand believes cities help the environment because they allow haft of the worlds population to live on about four percent of the land. This leaves more space for open country, such as farmland. City dwellers also have less impact per person on the environment than people in the countryside. Their roads, sewers, and power lines need fewer resources to build and operate. City apartments require less energy to heat, cool, and light. Most importantly, people in cities drive less so they produce fewer greenhouse gases per person. So its a mistake to see urbanization as evil; its a natural part of development. The challenge is how to manage the growth.29. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?A. The history of modern cities.B. How cities have grown over time.C. Changes taking place within cities.D. Why modern cities are changing.30. How have experts attitudes towards cities changed in recent decades?A. They think city-riving provides more benefits. B. They no longer see city-riving as attractive.C. They accept city life in spite of its problems.D. They now view the weaknesses as strengths.31. Which of the following would Edward Glaeser agree with?A. Over-crowded cities result in problems.B. City people get along better with each other.C. Cities provide more economic opportunities. D. Cities limit the flow of ideas.32. According to Paragraph 4, what would be the result of moving people out of cities?A. Economic production would be reduced.B. There would be less farmland available(可用的).C. People would travel less frequently.D. House values would fall greatly.DMy mom isnt fancy like other momsThey wear fancy clothes and drive fancy carsMy mom wears her gardening clothes when she walks me to schoolWhen fancy moms laugh, their laughs sound soft and whisperyYou can hear my moms laugh from down the hallI show her how to laugh quietly and she practicesBut before long she starts laughing even harder than beforeAt the talent show,my mom cheers loudly,“Bravo, everyone!Bravo!”instead of clapping politely the way fancy moms doFor our class hike(徒步旅行),parents are invitedAt breakfast I go over my rules for Mom,“Please dont whistleDont laugh loudlyNo clappingAnd stay in line”The other moms show up wearing fancy jackets and sneakersMy mom wears cutoffs,a floppy straw hat,and her old hiking bootsWe hike along, all in a lineSoon Mom starts to whistle her hiking songs,Shell Be Coming Round the MountainI shake my head at herShe stops and whispers,“OopsSorry,Jane”We keep hikingEverything is perfect untilOur teacher,MsSteele, stops and points,“A snake!”All the moms hold their kids hands and back up,except my mom“Watch out!It might be poisonous(有毒的)!”MsSteele saysThe other moms shuttle back some moreHowever,my mom steps forward and says,“HmmLets see what kind it isNope, lts not poisonous”I shut my eyesI know whats coming nextMom makes a sudden attack“Got it!”she saysThe other moms scream, not sounding fancy at allKids gather around as Mom examines the snake“Its OK to touch,”she saysEveryones too scared, but I go first“snakes arent slimy,”I tell themRight away, others line upA couple of the fancy moms come up to touch the snakes tailLater,MsSteele tells us to draw our favorite part of the hikeAfter a while,I look around quicklyEveryones picture is of Mom and me with the snakeThen I begins to feel proud of my mom.As we hike back to the bus,I squeeze Moms hand“Im glad I didnt tell you my dont-catch-snakes rule”She smilesBut soon, shes whistling her hiking songs again!I start to make her silent, then stopInstead,I take a deep breath and sing out tooEveryone joins in,even the fancy moms33The word“fancy”in this passage is close to“ ” Afashionable or expensive Benergetic or valuableCmodern or comfortable Dcommon or popular34Jane tries to make some rules for her mom because Ashe expects her mom not to catch snakesBshe wishes her mom to act more politely than the other momsCshe wants her mom to be different from othersDshe is afraid her mom will make her lose face 35Jane begins to feel proud of her mom when Ashe goes first to touch the snake and other kids follow herBshe joins her mom in singing together with the other momsCshe tries to stop her mom whistling but later she give upDshe finds everyone drawing about her mom and her with the snake第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。The Dos and Donts of Learning a New Language People decide to learn another language for many different reasonsSome learn another language because they would like to live in another country 36 Some people have to study a language at school and others might decide to learn a language just for fun!
