Unit 2 English and its historyHello, everyone. Im Jiang Lijun from No.2 Middle school of Hengyang County.Today Im very pleased to have an opportunity to talk about some of my teaching ideas. My topic is English and its history taken from Unit2 of Module 3 . It is made up of four parts. Part 1.My understanding of this lessonThe analysis of the teaching material:This lesson is a reading passage .It plays a very important part in the English teaching of this unit. By studying this text,students can improve their reading ability, learn more about English and its history and like learning English more. At the same time , I should get the students to understand some difficult sentences to comprehend the passage better. The students should do some listening, speaking and reading exercises,too. Teaching aims:1. Knowledge aim: Understand the main idea of the text.2. Ability aim: How to read a history article and understand about English culture.Key points / Teaching important points:How to understand the text better.Teaching difficult points: How to read a history article and understand about English culture.Part 2. My teaching theories ,methods and aidsBefore dealing with this lesson , Ill do my best to carry out the following theories: Make the students the real masters in class whileI myself act as a director;Combine the language structures with the language functions.Teaching method:Double activities teaching methodQuestion-and-answer activity teaching methodWatch-and-listen activityPair work or individual work methodTeaching aids:1. a tape recorder2. multimedia3. the blackboardPart 3. Teaching steps / proceduresI have designed the following steps to train their ability of listen-ing , speaking and reading , especially reading ability .The entire steps are:Greetings , Revision , Lead-in and preparation for reading ,Listening,Fast-reading , Intensive-reading ,Preparation for details of the text,Consolidation ,Homework.Step 1 Greetings Greet the whole class as usual.Step 2. Revision1.Ask students some questions to review the last lesson(about some different kinds of languages).2.Check the homework(do some reseach work to find out how the Engli- sh language has been developing ). Through this part ,we can cons- olidate what they studied yesterday , communicate with others about their survery results and prepare for the new lesson.Step 3. Lead-in and preparation for reading Language ,in its broad sense ,is a way information is transmitted .Itcan be spoken or seen .Wherever there are people ,there are languages.Nowadays , nearly 6,000 languges are used all over the world . and English as a worldwide language is more and more important . Today , Lets learn something about English and its history . Then write the title English and its history on the blackboard .Step 4. Listening Ill ask the students to close their books .and listen to the tape carefully. At the same time ,they should answer three easy questions(show them on the screen).1,what is the article about? English and its history. 2,What are the three kinds of English discussed in the article? Old English ,Middle English and Modern English . 3.Is English still changing ? Yes .Purpose: Train the students listening ability and prepare for later exercises. Step 5. Fast reading Read the passage as quickly as they can , and answer the questions C1on P24 .Purpose: Improve the studentsreading ability. Step 6. Intensive reading 1.According to the first two steps, we know the text is a history article. In this step , Well learn how to read a history article . Ill teach students to create a time table ,listing relevant info- rmation such as time ,places and events etc. Because they can help students understand a sequence of events and how pieces of informa- tion relate to the text.Now,students should read the text carefully again ,and fill in a table.(show the key on the screen)Kinds of EnglishTime EventsOld EnglishBefore the middle ofthe 5th centuryPeople in Britain all spoke a language called Celtic.At the end the 9th centuryThe Vikings invaded Britain andbrought their languages.By the 10th centuryOld English was the official language ofEngland.Middle EnglishIn 1066The Normans conquered English and took control of thecountry.By the latter half of the 14th centuryEnglish was adopted by all classes in English. In 1399Henry IV became King of Englishand used English for all offic-ial occasions. Modern EnglishDuring the Renaissa-nce in the 16th centuryModern English began.2.After finishing the table ,students will be told to do the exerciseC2 on page 24.Purpose:Further understand the text.(Train futher reading ability) Find out some difficult sentences and details of the text.Step 7. Preparation for details of the text. In this part,Ill explain some important points. 1.throughout , prep, during a period of time or from the beginning to the end of something . eg. Throughout the exam ,he sat there without writing a single word . He travelled almost all over the world throughout the two years .2.despite , prep , in spite of or although there exists the fact that eg.A.Despite the fact that she was accompanied by many people ,she still felt frightened. B.Despite the terrible food served,we found the plane ride nice and comfortable. 3.have an impact on ,to have influence on. eg.A.His ideas had a great impact on the research afterwards. B. What kind of impact on you at that moment? Step 8. Consolidation 1.This time ,Ill ask students to do exercises on the Books. Part D1 and D2 are very easy to finish.After two minutes, Check the answers with the students.2.Part E is a summary of the text. Doing this job ,students can unde-rstand the text better, After checking the answers, students shouldretell the text using their own words according to the summary.Purpose: I want to know if my students understand the whole text rea-lly and if they master what I mean to tell them in this class.Whats more, I want to let them have the ability of introducing and analyzing expression.Step 8.
