文档简介

While writing is an important aspect of English 10 and Communications 11, reading for meaning is the primary skill needed for success. When you read, you need to have your brain actively engaged in the process. There are several ways to double check that this is happening. 1) Create pictures. As you are reading, you want your brain to be seeing what the words are saying. This might happen while you are reading, but to improve, take a break and draw a picture of what you just read. 2) Summarize or paraphrase. Pause and write a short summary of what just happened. This might be much shorter than the original text, or it might be just as long, but in your own words. If youre reading poetry, a paraphrase is often longer than the poem!3) Ask questions. It is normal to have questions while you are reading. Questions such as, Who is this character? What does that sentence mean? Why did she do that? Where is this character now?, will help you understand better. Sometimes you might stop and try to answer the question, sometimes you just keep the question in your mind and continue reading until you find an answer. 4) Make connections. Think about what the text reminds you of. What happens in the text that is different from your life? The same?5) Predict what will come next. Pause in your reading and think about where the story is going. You dont have to guess the ending, you can just think about what might happen next. Enhancing these skills will allow you to respond more easily to texts. If you read actively, you will improve at being able to understand tone, theme, conflict, and the importance of figurative devices. Task for the holiday:1) Set a goal for yourself. What do you want to improve on, related to your reading skills, this holiday? My goal is based on my reading skills and what I really need. I plan to read the summary edition on internet, which helps me a lot on reading the book! Then I will try to understand every meaning of difficult vocabs. Finally, based on my previous experience and understanding on this book, I will feel better on reading this book. How will you know if you have accomplished your goal? I will follow the instructions to check step by step, then I can choose to read again and again, since I have enough time. Basically I can predict that my book will be finished in 15 days, then I can fill in the forms below.2) Read for at least 15 minutes five days / week. Before you begin reading, review your recent reading log entries, mark down the page number and your starting time. After reading, complete the daily activity. You can modify these and expand on them. The prompts are only tools to help you engage with your reading. 3) Keep a vocabulary journal. Each day, while reading, write down 5 new words. After reading and filling out the reading log, practice using these words. Put them in sentences, draw pictures of them, and look up the definition. Make sure you learn if the word is a verb, noun, adjective or adverb. HINT: Try to choose different types of words each day. Learning five new verbs is harder than learning two verbs, one noun, one adjective and one adverb. HINT TWO: Learn words in pairs. If you learn a verb, learn a word that can follow it. (For example, dont just learn the verb, “suggest,” learn the phrase, “my teacher suggests reading”.)Holiday Homework Reading Log for a novel (assigned or independent). At dinner, he shared his experience through his day together with his family. Jonas sister lily also shared her strange experience of meeting a group of child from other communities and her dad educated her and ask her to regard this experience in a different way.First chapter.Complete the following five questions starters. How: enjoyably; scared; sharing; shocked; discussing. When: Not sureWhere: at home, at school, in the community.Who: Jonas lily dad mumWhy: sharing experiences is their habit at home.Predict what you think will happen in the next chapter. His parents did, and Lily did, and so did all of his group members and friends. But there were a few exceptions: Jonas himself, and a female Five who he had noticed had the different, lighter eyes. No one mentioned such things; it was not a rule, but was considered rude to call attention to things that were unsettling or different about individuals. Lily, he decided, would have to learn that soon, or she would be called in for chastisement because of her insensitive chatter. Not a lot of people have grey eyes, but Jonas does. But not a lot of people mention that thing, because it is not allowed to talk about others privacies.Jonas also thought about teaching lily something. How does this story connect to your experience at Maple Leaf?
