Sorry,I dont recognise you.Where have you been all these years,Mathilde?I hope you werent ill.You dont look very well.M:No,Jeanne I wasnt ill.I know I look older than my age.Thats because of hard work-ten years of hard work.J:Im sorry, Mathilde.Did you have a hard time?M:Yes,very hard. Years of hard work, very little food, only a small cold room to live in and never, never moments rest. That has been my life for the past ten years.J:Mathilde!I didnt know.Im sorry. May I know what happened?M:Well.I would rather not to tell you.J:Oh,come,Mathilde. Surely you can tell an old friend.M:Well,.Well,it was all because of that necklace, your beautiful diamond necklace.J:My necklace?I dont understand. Could you please explain?M:Do you remember one afternoon ten years agowhen I came to your house and borrowed a necklace of yours?Pierre,my husband, was working in a government office.Wed been invited to a ball at the palace,so I needed to borrow some jewellery.Scene 2The home of Mathilde and Pierre(P)Loisel, ten years before.P:Mathilde!Ive got some wonderful news.Weve been invited to the ball at the palace.M:It cant be true,PirreP:But it is true. I was the only person in my office who was invited.Ive written to accept the invitation.M:Oh,Pierre, how wonderful! But I dont think we can go.I havent got a evening dress for the ball! And a new dress costs over four hundred frances.P:Four hundred! Thats a lot of money. But,just this once. After all, this ball is very important.M:But theres another thing, Pierre.I have no jewellery to wear.P:Does that matter? Cant you just wear a flower instead?M:No,I couldnt do that.Everybody else will be wearing jewellery.I cant be the only woman who isnt wearing jewellery.P:Cant you borrow some?Dont you have a friend who might lend you some?M:Let me think. Maybe I could ask Jeanne. She married a man with a lot of money.Ill go and see her on Friday after I get the new dress.Scene 3In the park,Mathilde continues to tell Jeanne her story.M:So I called on you and asked if I could borrow some jewellery.Do you remember now?J:Yes,Mathilde, I remember.M:You were very kind. You brought out all your jewelleryand you told me I could take anything I liked. There were so many beautiful things that it was hard to choose. And then I saw a lovely diamond necklacewith a big blue stone in the centre.J:I remember. You tried it on and it looked wonderful on you.Im sure you looked beautiful that evening. You were always a pretty girlM:In those days I may have been pretty.Pierre and I did have a very good time at the ball. But that was the last moment of happiness in our lives. After that night everything changed.J:Why? What happened?M:On our way home that night I looked downand saw that the necklace was not around my neck any more.I told Pierre. We rushed back to the palace and looked for it.We asked everyone there if they had found a necklace, but without luck.We couldnt find it.It was lost.J:But I dont understand. You brought it back to me the next afternoon.I remember very well.M:Yes,Jeanne, I brought a necklace to you.It was exactly like your necklace, but it was a different one.It cost us thirty-six thousand francs.J:Thirty-six thousand francs!M:Pierre and I borrowed the money and bought the necklace.During the next ten years we both worked day and night to pay for it.Thats why I now look so old.Well, after ass these years weve at last paid off all our debts.J:But my dear friend,Mathilde. That necklace you borrowed from me wasnt a real diamond necklace. It wasnt precious at all.The stones in the necklace were made of glass. It was worth five hundred francs at most.Integrating skills Reading and writingT:Good morning, class!Ss:Good morning, Mrs Brown.T:Today we are going to learn about famous plays and authors.First,I want to know what kind of plays you like. What about you,Tim.What kind of plays do you like?TIM:Oh,Im not sure. I dont like plays that much. Can we talk about something else, please?I prefer watching TV and playing computer games.T:I see.Well, some TV programmes and computer games are a bit like playsyou have characters playing different roles and acting out a story.TIM:Thats true. When I play a computer game,I act as one of the heroes in the game.SHARON:Yes,and some TV programmes are also like plays. They tell a story. You watch actors who act out dialogues and perform scenes.Just like in a play.T:Thats right.Well, why dont we try writing a play of our own?JIM:Thats too difficult.T:Well, writing a short play is not that difficult, and besides,we have to start somewhere if we want to learn how to write plays. You all know how to write a story, because we have read and written many stories in class. You also know how to write dialogues, because we often use dialogues in class. If we work together,we might come up with a very good story.Lets give it a try.Who wants to start?Joy?JOY?JOY:I know a good story.A student goes to see her grandmother who lives on the other side of town.On her way to her grandmothersshe meets an alien who takes her in his spaceship.T:Thats great. What happens on the spaceship?JIM:We may want to write this:the alien takes her to the futureand shows her what the world will look like a thousand years from now. Then she goes back to her grandmother and tells her about the future, but her grandmother doesnt believe her.SARAH:Could we write another story? The student is on her way to schooland she meets a girl that looks exactly like her.She is scared at first, but then she asks the other girl who she is and where she is from. The other girl says that she is a cloneand that she will live with the first girls family.T:OK,so we have two good ideas.Im, sure we can think of many more.Joy,use your idea about the alien with your group.Write the story first and then write down the the dialogue.Sarah,do the same with your story about the clone. The other groups will use their own ideasand then we will rehearse the plays and act them out.Good Luck!Work bookUnit 15The necklaceIntegrating skillsReadingLearning to actHave you ever dreamt of becoming an actor?Acting is different from other jobs, because many of the skills needed cannot easily be learnt. The first thing an actor must have is the desire to become an actorand the belief that he or she can act well. There are basic skills every actor must learn, such as how to use ones voice and how to move on stage, but becoming a good actor is often a matter of personal development. If you want to become an actor, you must build up your self-confidence and learn to notice people around you.Learning how to act can be fun. Many acting teachersshow their students how to use their imagination in new ways.A common acting exercise asks students to imagine that they are a treea cloud,or an ocean wave.Students are then asked to close their eyes, concentrate on the object they have chosen, and use their body to show what the object feels like. The teacher may also ask students to think about a general topicand list situations or actions that belong to the topic. For example,if the topic is friendship, students may lista handshake, laughtermeeting and so on.They are then asked to show the situation or action, using their bodies only.Acting exercisesmay also teach the students to trust each other and to communicate. For example, one student may close his or her eyesand have another student lead him or her around.Or,a teacher may write the numbers from one to five on the blackboard, explaining that one means walk around but dont look at anyone, two means stay away from others, three means try to stay between two other studentsand so on.The teacher then calls out the numbersand the students act in the way described. When actors prepare for a performance, they have to do more than just learn the lines of the play. The director will help them decide how to move, where to stand or walk and what expressions to use.Perhaps the most important thing an actor or actress has to learnis to understand the character they play.Good actors must of course know what their character does in the play, but they also need to know what the character might do in other situations.Sometimes, actors change themselves in order to become more like the character they play. When Tom Hanks shot the film Cast Away,Cast Away,he had to lose a lot of weightto look like someone who had been on a deserted island for almost five years.Actors also often spend time with people who are like their characters. For example,if an actor is going to play a policeman,he or she may spend a month following a real policemanto watch how he works and lives.Even if you dont want to be a actor, you may want to take part in a play or an acting class. Many of the skills an actor or actress has to learncan be useful in our everyday life and may even help you learn faster. So act now and learn to act!
