They need more practice and proper learning methods and strategies in their English study. 2. Learning strategies: (1) Task-based reading strategy (learning through doing)(2) Interested in learning strategy (such as dialog, discussion, performance etc.)(3) Open learning strategy (brainstorm, role play, given situation)Part 3 Teaching Theories and Methods Before dealing with this lesson, Ill do my best to carry out the following theories: Make the students the real masters in class while the teacher himself acts as director; Combine the language structures with the language functions; Let the students get some moral education while they are learning the English language. In my opinion, the main instructional aims of learning English in the Middle School is to develop the students abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language. So in this lesson Ill mainly use the following methods:1. Discuss in pairs or in groups2. Question-and-answer activity teaching method3. “Task-based” teaching method4. Audio-visual teaching methodPart 4. Teaching Procedures I have designed the following steps to train students abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing, especially reading ability. The entire steps are:Step1. Revision and Lead-in Before teaching new knowledge, I will go over what we have learned then I will activate students interest by asking the following questions. I will show them on the PPT (PowerPoint): 1. Which is the most widely used language in the world?2. Are you good at English? What do think is the most difficult part of studying English, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary or something else?3. What do you know about the history or development of the English language?Tell students that they will learn a passage dealing with English and its history.Purpose: Through the free-talking, the teacher can activate what students have learned. At the same time, the activity arouses students interest and paves the way for reading the article.Step2. SkimmingStudents are allowed several minutes to skim the text. Their skimming is based on questions on page 22 concerning the general idea of the text.Purpose: Through skimming, the students can know the general idea of the text after reading the questions.Step 3 Listening for the detailsPresent the questions on page 24. Let the students bear them in mind and listen to the text carefully to find the answers. Check the answers.1. Where did the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes come from? They came from the European mainland.2. Why can similar pairs of words be found in the English language? Because each word or phrase came from a different language.3. What was the German plural form replaced by? It was replaced by the French way of making plurals.4. Which King of England used English for all official occasions? King Henry IV. Purpose: Letting the students listen to the recorder with problems could direct students, and at the same time, making them pay attention to details.Step 4 Intensive readingAsk the students to pay attention to the subtitles and divide the text into several parts. The text can be easily divided into 4 parts considering the subtitles, namely, Introduction, Old English, Middle English and Modern English (show on the PPT).Purpose: Scanning subtitles is a kind of reading strategy. The teacher should teach students to master learning methods and skills. In the reading process, the teacher should pay attention to training the students reading strategies to improve their reading efficiency. Further understand the text to find out some difficult sentences and details of the text.
