AOne day I was driving home with a woman. She rolled down the window, fifty feet away from the driveway and spit her gum (口香糖)out of the window. “Couldnt you just wait five seconds and put your gum where it belongs?” I asked, annoyed. She was not the only one who was gum-lazy. Consider the following. Once I brushed chewed gum under my desk, I shook with fright. At Folsom Middle School, whenever I had to walk by the gum wall next to the girls locker room, I felt totally disgusted. When I was young, I walked outside during my dance show in my ballet shoes, always stepping right on a big and juicy piece of bubble gum. I was extremely upset. The worst part of all these incidents is that a trash can is located near. But some people are too lazy to walk towards it. If you cant be a responsible gum chewer, dont chew at all. Thats all Im going to say. Take Singapore as a good example. The chewing gum ban in Singapore was placed. It bans the import and sale of chewing gum in Singapore, whether for the purpose of trade or personal chewing. However, the ban has been partly lifted with some types of gum, such as medical gum, allowable. This comes with the warning that it is sold only by a druggist, who has to take down the names of buyers. Obviously, the Singapore government gets angry at gum stuck in keyholes of mailboxes and on elevator buttons. Not only is it annoying, but chewing gum can actually do harm to the health. Most gum contains aspartame (阿斯巴甜), a chemical sweetener(增甜剂)that the US government is now deciding whether or not it is a deadly chemical. If it is, it may cause cancer. Other studies suggest that aspartame may cause neurological(神经系统的)disorders. Therefore, aspartame is not allowed to use in the US.So just say no to chewing gum.1. A. stepped on a piece of gum while dancing B. cleaned gum under her desk sometimes C. was troubled by chewed gumD. often found chewed gum in her locker 3. What do we know about aspartame?A. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To advise people against chewing gum. B. To criticize people who are lazy. C. To persuade people to buy medical gum. D. To make comments on the ban in Singapore.B Ask any group of teenagers in the UK what they most like to eat, and foods like pizzas, curries, pasta, burgers and chips are bound to get mentioned and many young people would probably also list hanging out at the local fast-food restaurant as one of their favorite pastimes(消遣). But what teenagers like to eat is not necessarily what they should be eating. According to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey, far too many young people in the UK between the ages of 14 and 18 consume too much fat, sugar and salt in their diet and take in too many calories. Meanwhile their intake of starchy carbohydrates(含大量淀粉的碳水化合物), fiber, iron, vitamins and calcium is too low.For a growing body, eating foods containing plenty of calcium, such as milk, yoghurt and cheese, is particularly important as calcium is essential for the development of healthy, strong bones. Similarly, foods that are rich in iron are good for young, rapidly developing bodies, so red meat, bread, green vegetables, fried fruit and fortified(使增强体质的)breakfast cereals(谷类食物)are also recommended. It is during our teenage years that habits of lifestyle can become entrenched(根深蒂固的), so it is greatly important that young people are educated about what foods are good. In 2005, in order to change eating habits and open teenagers minds to new tastes, a chef named Jamie Oliver launched a “Feed Me Better” campaign. As a part of television series Jamies School Dinners, he worked with teachers and cooks in a number of schools across the UK to provide more healthy school meals. Although some teenagers and parents refused to have a try at first, the project was generally a huge success and helped to influence governmental policy on nutritional standards for school meals. No one expects to end the teenage love with fast and junk food, but, hopefully, if projects like “Feed Me Better” continue to give out the right messages, more young people will understand the importance of eating healthily. 5. From the first two paragraphs we can know that _. A. British teenagers eat too much junk food B. Which of the following statements is NOT TURE according to the article? A. Teenagers shouldnt eat any junk food at all. B. It is difficult to make children understand the importance of a healthy diet. C. It is OK to eat a little bit junk food, as long as you eat healthily most of the time D. Our eating habits are developed in our teenager years and then influence our lifestyle. C Two new studies suggest that modern running shoes could increase the risk of injuries to runners. One study involved sixty-eight healthy young women and men who ran at least twenty-four kilometers a week. The runners were observed on a treadmill machine (跑步机). Sometimes they wore running shoes. Other times they ran barefoot (赤脚). Researchers from the JKM Technologies Company in Virginia, the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado did the study. They found that running shoes create more stress that could damage knees, hips and ankle joints than running barefoot. They observed that the effect was even greater than the effect reported earlier for walking in high heels. The study appeared in the official scientific journal of The American Academy of Physical Medicine. The other study appeared in the journal Nature. It compared runners in the United States and Kenya. The researchers were from Harvard University in Massachusetts, Moi University in Kenya and the University of Glasgow in Scotland. They divided the runners into three groups. One group had always run shoeless. Another group had always run with shoes. And the third group had changed to shoeless running. Runners who wear shoes usually come down heel first. That puts great force on the back of the foot. But the study found that barefoot runners generally land on the front or middle of their foot. That way they ease into their landing and avoid striking their heel. Harvards Daniel Lieberman led the study. He says the way most running shoes are designed may explain why those who wear them land on their heels. The heel of the shoe is bigger and heavier than other parts of the shoe, so it would seem more likely to come down first. Also, the heel generally has thick material under it to soften landings. But the researchers do not suggest that runners immediately start running barefoot. They say it takes some training. And there can be risks, like running when your feet are too cold to feel if you get injured. The study was partly supported by Vibram, which makes a kind of footwear that it says is like running barefoot. The findings have gotten a lot of attention. But the researchers say there are many problems in the way the press has reported in their paper. So they have tried to explain their findings on a Harvard Website. 9. Its colors are from yellowish orange to brownish white. Each tiger has over a hundred stripes(斑纹). These stripes are never the same in any two, just as the fingerprints are never the same in two human beings. Not only do these strips lead to a tiger looking great, but they also act as a great tool for them to mix perfectly well with the forest colors.A tiger can weigh as much as 300kg, with the male tiger weighing more than a female tiger. A tiger can be around 3.3 meters in length. Its tail is about a meter long. The tail is important in leading balance to the tiger when it is running after its prey.Tigers are natives of Asia and they usually live in forests and grasslands. Some are also found on mountainous areas. However, tigers are never far from a water body. Tigers eat animals, both small and large, which range from frogs, birds to giraffes. Tigers can eat up to 60 pounds of meat in one night. And while this is an interesting fact, what is more interesting is that they can go without food for a week at a time.Tigers usually hunt in the evening and during the night. Tigers can see perfectly well in the dark, so hunting is never a problem. When a tiger finds its prey, it will go as close to it as possible and then run after it as possible. If it is a small animal, the tiger will knock it down with its feet. Then using its teeth, it will strangle(勒死)the animals throat and break its neck. In case of larger animals, the tiger will strangle them in the beginning. When the tiger can not eat all its prey at one time, it will cover it up with leaves or other things and hide it so that it can come back and eat it later. This practice continues till the meat is gone.12. Whats the purpose of the passage?A. To show how tigers hunt.B. To call on people to protect tigers. C. To introduce the importance of tigers.D.
