In 1992, the people of the town decided that it was time to restart some long-forgotten traditions. Back in the late 1800s, there was a robber called Rosvo-Ronkainen in that area. He was said to only accept men as members of his gang who proved their worth in challenges. At that time, it was also a common practice to steal women from neighboring villages. The Wife-carrying World Championship is becoming increasingly popular. A large number of competitors, people, and journalists from Finland to Canada attend the Wife-carrying World Championship every year. The event is well-known for its warm and humorous atmosphere. The Wife-carrying World Championship is held on a 253.5 meters long official track. The track has two dry obstacles and a water obstacle, about a meter deep. There are a few basic rules and the winning team is the couple who complete the course in the shortest time. The wife to be carried may be your own, or your neighbors. The minimum weight of the wife to be carried is 49 kg. If she is less than 49 kg, the wife will be given a heavy bag to carry. Each time a competitor drops his wife, that couple will be fined 15 seconds.Along with the Wife-carrying World Championship, there is also a team competition. The distance is the same but three men in the team carry the wife in turns. At the exchange point the carrier has to drink official “wife-carrying drink” before continuing the race. A special prize is awarded to the team with the best costumes.Alongside with the Wife-carrying World Championship, there are bands playing music, a wife-carrying dance and other forms of entertainment.65. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)This bird has feathers that look like jewels in the sunlight, and it flies so fast that you cant see how its wings move. What is this tiny creature? It is the hummingbird(蜂鸟)! Most hummingbirds beat their wings from 55 to 80 times a second! This speed makes an interesting sound. It helps the hummingbird in many important ways. A hummingbird can fly sideways. It can even fly upside down! This fancy flying helps this tiny bird get its food. The hummingbird eats nectar, the sugary juice found inside most flowers. Because it is too large to land on the petals(花瓣), it must hover(停留在空中) in mid-air while it dines on the flowers nectar. Its small size and fast wing speed make hovering possible. It uses its long, narrow bill and tongue to reach deep into the center of a flower and lick up the liquid sugar. Then the hummingbird quickly flies sideways to the next flower. Being one of the fastest birds around is hard work. The hummingbirds heart beats from 200 to 1,200 times every minute. The hummingbird needs plenty of energy to fly from flower to flower. To get enough energy, a hummingbird must eat about every ten minutes. Most hummingbirds will eat insects, but they like nectar the most. Nectar from flowers is mostly sugar. The sugar gives a hummingbird the quick bursts of energy it needs to keep moving. The hummingbird mother raises her family by herself. She builds a nest from plant materials. On the outside, most hummingbird nests are about the size of a quarter. Before long, two eggs fill the nest. Each egg is the size of a bean. Before winter arrives, many hummingbirds migrate(迁移). Some fly very long distances. A biologist named Gayle Brown studied these interesting birds. She put bands on their legs to track them. One banded hummingbird was on Vancouver Island near Washington. A few weeks later, scientists in southern New Mexico caught the same bird. Thats a long way for such a small creature to travel. 65Hummingbird stay in the air while they eat because _.A. the flowers can sometimes be harmfulB. they cant stay at one place for longC. the other hummingbirds want the sugarD. they cannot land on the petals66What does the underlined word “It” in the second paragraph refer to?A. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A)Children in Bosnia-Herzegovina all know the ancient story of the poor woman who caught a golden fish, released it, and in return gained wealth and happiness. According to a 1998 Associated Press story, this Balkan fairy tale turned into reality for one poor family. Before the start of the Bosnian war, the Malkoc family lived next to a small lake in the northwestern village of Jezero. One day in 1990, Smajo Malkoc returned from a trip to Austria with an unusual gift for his teenage sons, Dzevad and Catib: an aquarium(鱼缸) with two goldfish. Two years passed before Bosnian Serb forces advanced on Jezero. The women and children fled, and the men stayed back to resist the attacking soldiers. Smajo Malkoc was killed. When his wife, Fehima, sneaked back into the destroyed village to bury her husband and rescue what remained of their belongings, she took pity on the fish in the aquarium. She let them out into the nearby lake, saying to herself, “This way, they might be more fortunate than us.” Fast-forward to 1995, Fehima Malkoc returned with her sons to Jezero. Nothing but ruins remained of their home and their village. Through misty eyes she looked toward the lake. Glimpsing something strange, she walked over to the shore. “The whole lake was shining from the thousands of golden fish in it,” she said. “It made me immediately think of my husband. This was something he left me that I never hoped for.”During the years of killing all around the lake, life underwater had flourished. After their return, Fehima Malkoc and her sons started caring for and selling the goldfish. By 1998, homes, stores, and coffee shops all over the region feature aquariums containing fish from Jezero. The Malkoc house, rebuilt on its original site, is one of the biggest in the village. Two new cars are parked in front, and the family says it has enough money to quit worrying about the future. “ It was a special kind of gift from our father,” Dzevad Malkoc said. Whenever one gives, one can never underestimate what a gift of love or an act of kindness might produce.65. Why did the woman let the fish out into the lake? A .She thought of the fairy tale. B. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.( A )Drama and the performing arts are excellent methods of building confidence in children and adults alike. Learning through drama allows children to explore their creativity and have fun while leaving their shyness and worries behind. Drama also works by supporting the growth of imagination and other skills. Entertainment has become rather passive with cinema, television, and computer games becoming more popular. These screen-based methods have had a negative effect on communication. However, drama puts the “get-up-and-go” back into entertainment. Children have the opportunity to connect with others in a more meaningful way as drama encourages speech development and awareness of body language, and allows the child to become more socially aware. Play and drama are closely linked. When children play a game, they are pretending and using their imagination and so are moving away from reality to create their own story. Drama is a vehicle through which children can express themselves more freely through mime (哑剧表演), gesture, movement, and speech to make education fun. Children gain confidence by understanding that there is no final answer in drama and that their opinion and contribution are valued. Children are able to give a personal response to many issues and situations such as poverty, bullying(威吓), global warming and recycling. The issues that drama can deal with are endless. Drama and education have a strong link as drama can encourage children to take an active interest in other subjects such as geography, history, and English and so have a more rounded education. As a drama teacher, I have witnessed children at their first class holding onto their parents arm unwilling to let go. Then to see the same child later running into my class with smile is an excellent sight. Drama installs confidence in children by allowing them to improvise (即兴创作) and experiment. Everyone is given the opportunity to shine within drama.65. Performing drama is likely to help children _. Negative effect on children.67. We can know from the fourth paragraph that _. A. childrens opinions are very important B. a drama usually has no ending C. children respond positively to such issue as poverty D. doing drama can help children learn other subject68. According to the authors experience stated in the last paragraph, we know that _. A. most children dont like to go to school B. children are changeable in school C. children are especially interested in drama D. children can get on well with their parents5Section BDirections: Read the following passages. He nodded, and then showed me a plant on the counter. “I can give you this one for 35 cents.” he said. “Aw, gee,” I protested, “it looks like a weed(草)!” About 18 inches high, the plant was in a small pot covered with faded red paper. “Now trust me, boyI promise that tomorrow morning when you get up, you will find your most beautiful flower.” said Mr. Rocco.
