Unit 7 Whats the highest mountain in the world?Period 2 - Section A 3a-3cQomolangma - the Most Dangerous Mountain in the World?Lesson PlanningBackground Information:School: Shantou Dongsha Middle School Teacher: Xu Biyu Students: 46 students, Class 8, Grade 8 Materials: Section A, 3a-3c in Unit 7, Grade 8, Go For It! Type of lesson: Reading Lesson duration: 40 minutes Teaching Aids: ppt; blackboard; video Students information The students in class 8, Grade 8 are interested in English, and they are so active in class. And most of them have a good habit of previewing new words. In English classes, some of the students have their own opinions and would like to try to speak out in English, but it is hard for them to speak or write something logically in English. So the teacher in this class wants to guide them to design a mind-map through the reading material with the help of some reading strategies in order to let the students set a structure of the mind-map, which could help them understand passages or write something logically.Objectives:1. Instructional objectives By the end of the class, more than 95% students should be able to1) Recognize some new words and language chunks, such as, achievement, southwestern, take in, succeed, challenge and in the face of;2) Compare the comparative forms and the superlative forms, for example, the most dangerous sport, the most famous place, more serious, and stronger;3) Develop some reading strategies through reading, like predicting, skimming, scanning, inferring the meaning of new words in context and summarizing;4) Design a mind-map to get to know more about the reading material and relate the passage based on the mind-map;2. Educational objectives By the end of the class, about 85% students should be able to1) Talk about the natural geography in English;2) Learn to challenge themselves in the face of difficulties;3. Grammar: comparative forms and superlative formsTopic: Reading: Qomolangma - the Most Dangerous Mountain in the World?Focal and Difficult Points:1. Students can learn the new words and language chunks, and talk about the natural geography;2. Students are able to use some reading strategies to understand the passage;ProceduresStep 1 GreetingPurpose: The teacher greets students to let them realize that class begins and make preparations for new class.Step 2 Revision (2 minutes)Purpose: Review the words and the sentences they have learned by using some pictures.T: Lets enjoy the journey around the world! (Show a series of pictures of the famous places in the world, and talk about them.) Q: Where did we go just now? A: We went to_, the _in the world.Step 2 Free talk (Pair work) (2 minutes)Purpose: By talking about sports, which is related to their lives, to elicit the topic, the students will have good interest in it.T: Do you think what the most dangerous sport is?S: Swimming, Shooting, climbing, etc. (Show a picture of Qomolangma and talk about it.) T: What do you think of Qomolangma? S: It is the highest mountain in the world. T: Do you think it is the most dangerous mountain in the world?S: YES!T: If you are a climber, do you want to climb Qomolangma? And why?S: . (Discuss in pairs and share.)Step 3 Pre-reading (2 minutes)Task 1: Speak your mind (predicting) Purpose: Let the students guess what things maybe talked about according to the title and the picture. T: Look at the picture and the title: Qomolangma - the Most Dangerous Mountain in the World? If you want to write an article with this title, what would you like to talk about?Step 4 While-readingPurpose: Design different tasks to train the reading skills and divide the passage into three paragraphs to lower the difficulty of reading. All of these are aimed at arousing the students interest in reading and in English. Task 2: Matching (1 minute) Purpose: Let the students read through each paragraph quickly (20 seconds for Para.1, 10 seconds for Para.2, and 15 seconds for Para.3), and match each paragraph with its main idea in order to train the reading skill - Skimming. (Let the text of each paragraph go through the screen from bottom to the top.) Reading strategy - Skimming: Look through to find the main idea of each paragraph. Read each paragraph very quickly in the screen, and match each paragraph with the main ideas. Spirit of climbersAchievements of climbersFacts and dangers T: According to the main ideas of the paragraphs, lets get to know more about the passage with this mind-map. Task 3: Q&A-Para.1 (3 minutes) Purpose: Let the students read Para.1, and answer some questions in order to train the reading skill - Scanning.Reading strategy - Scanning: Read the passage or the paragraph carefully to find specific information.Read the paragraph 1 and answer the following questions Q1: Where are the Himalayas? Q2: How high is Qomolangma? Q3: What makes it highest? (Enjoy a video about what makes Qomolangma the highest.) S: 大自然的力量。(The force of nature) T: Now, lets complete the mind-map. Task 4: Listing - Para.1 (2 minute)Read Para.1 and list the dangers for the climbers. Task 5: T or F - Para.2 (4 minutes)Purpose: Let the students read Para.2, and judge T or F for the following statements in order to train the reading skill - Scanning and let the students try to infer the meaning of some new words in context.Reading strategy - Inferring the meaning of new words based on contextRead the Para.2 and mark T or F for the following sentences.( ) 1. The first people to reach the top were Tenzing Norgay and Junko Tabei.( ) 2. The first Chinese team reached the top on May 29, 1953.( ) 3. The first woman to succeed was Junko Hillary in 1975.Task 6: Fill in blanks - Para.3 (3 minutes)Read Para.3 and fill in the blanks.So many climbers risk their lives even though its dangerous, because they want to themselves difficulties. We should trying to our dreams. Humans can sometimes be than nature. (Let students make sentences with the red words.) T: OK! Now lets complete the mind-map. Step 5 Post-readingTask 8: Retelling (6 minutes)Purpose: Let the students make a general summary and retell the passage in groups based on the summary. Working in groups can lower down the difficulty of retelling.1. Make a summary (Whole class work).2. Work in groups, and retell the passage based on the mind-map.(Group 1 retells “the facts”, Group 2 retells “the dangers”, Group 3 retells “the achievements”, and Group 4 retells “the spirit”.) Task 9: An interview (14 minutes)Purpose: Let the students enjoy a video about one climber and make an interview based on the information they get from the video to have a deeper understanding of the passage and try to let them speak more in a real situation. 1. Questions: For healthy people, its very dangerous to climb Qomolangma.What about blind people? Can they climb Qomolangma? 2. Enjoy a video about Eric, the first blind man to reach the top. T: Look at the video and get information about Eric from the video.Name:Eric From:America When:in 2001Achievement: The first blind man to reach the top of Qomolangma. 3. Make an interview Work in pairs. If one of you is a reporter from CCTV and the other is Eric, now you need to interview Eric. For Example:R: Good morning, Eric. Nice to meet you!E: Good morning. Nice to meet you, too.R: We all know youre the first blind man to reach the top of Qomolangma.
