AAs a boy growing up in India,I had longed to travel abroad.I used to listen to the stories my father would tell me about his stay in Canada and tours to Europe in the 1970s,with great interest. My big moment finally came in the summer of 1998 when I was able to accompany my parents to Europe, where my father was to attend a meeting. We planned to travel to Belgium,Netherlands and West Germany.I have vivid memories even today of going to Mumbai airport at night all excited about finally going abroad.I had heard several great things about Lufthansa till then but now I finally got to experience them first hand, during the flight to Frankfurt. We flew business class and even today I can remember the excellent service by the Lufthansa crew. The flight was really smooth and thoroughly enjoyable, even for someone like me,who is otherwise scared of flying. After spending almost two weeks in Europe,we took the Lufthansa airport express from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt airport, for our return flight. What a journey that was! All along the Rhine (莱茵河),it was simply an unforgettable experience.I was in a sombre mood on the flight back to Mumbai as it marked the end of a wonderful vacation, but the Lufthansa crew members were able to change it into a most enjoyable experience yet again, with the quality of their service.Being the first airline to take me overseas,Lufthansa will always hold a special place in my heart.Even today,I continue to enjoy flights on Lufthansa and simply cannot dream of choosing any other airline.Flying,in general, for me,has always been an ordeal (terrible and painful experience)Flying on Lufthansa, however,is something I always have and always will look forward to.1Which country does the author live in now? In their 8year, 12album history, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr altered (改变) popular culture dramatically. And it wasnt just the suits and changing lengths of hair the four Liverpool boys wore that had such an impact, but what they seemed to stand for. The world saw them as the voice of a new generation, one with a very different attitude to life. Their influence was at its height in the 1960s, but their music continues to stir listeners today. However, up until recently one aspect of the Beatles was struck in Yesterday: The music had never been remastered (重新灌录). But on September 9 that situation came to an end, with the release of the entire bands music in a digital makeover. It is probably the biggest reissue (重新发行) in pop music history, said British newspaper the Financial Times. The albums were remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, the location where the band produced much of their work. The cover of their last album, Abbey Road of 1969, featured the four young men striding (大步行走) across a zebra crossing on Abbey Road itself. It is one of the most famous of all Beatles images. Recently, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album, hundreds of Beatles lovers gathered there to show their appreciation. Pop groups come and go. The boy band pursued by screaming fans one year will be forgotten the next. But the Beatles are one of the few groups whose music seems to have endured (持久). Why? Paul McCartneys biographer Barry Miles has an explanation: “They were the first rock band and they just happened to be the best. They were the first band to play stadiums, to have their own products. They were groundbreaking in every way,” he says.6Why did the Beatles change popular culture?ABecause of the suits of the four Liverpool boys.BBecause of changing lengths of hair the four Liverpool boys wore.CBecause of their albums.DBecause of their different attitude to life.7Which of the following statements is FALSE according to the second paragraph?AThe Beatles influenced people at its height in the 1960s.BTheir music Yesterday had never been remastered.CThe entire bands music in a digital makeover will be remastered.DOn September 9, their music came to an end.8What is their last album?AYesterday. BAbbey Road of 1969. CCome Together. DIn My life.9What is NOT the reason why their music can endure?AThey were the first rock band. BThey were the best one.CThey were the first band to play stadiums and to have their own works.DThey wore special suits.C“What is the most important thing youve done in your life?” The question was put to me during a presentation I gave to a group of lawyers. The answer came to me in an instant. Its not the one I gave, because the situation was not right. As a lawyer in the entertainment industry, I knew the audience wanted to hear some amusing stories about my work with wellknown people, but heres the true answer: The most important thing Ive ever done occurred on October 8,1990. I began the day playing tennis with an old friend I hadnt seen for a while. Between points we talked about what had been happening in each others lives. He and his wife had just had a baby boy, who was keeping them up at night. While we were playing, a car came screaming up the road toward the courts. It was my friends father, who shouted to my friend that his baby had stopped breathing and was being rushed to the hospital. In a flash my friend was in the car and gone, disappearing in a cloud of dust. For a moment I just stood there, paralyzed(呆若木鸡). Then I tried to figure out what I should do. Follow my friend to the hospital? There was nothing I could accomplish there, I convinced myself. My friends son was in the care of doctors and nurses, and nothing I could do or say would affect the outcome. Be there for moral support? Well, maybe. But my friend and his wife both had large families, and I knew theyd be surrounded by relatives who would provide more than enough comfort and support, whatever happened. All I could do at the hospital, I decided, was to get in the way. Also, I had planned a full day with my family, who were waiting for me to get home. So I decided to head back to my house and check in my friend later. As I started my car, I realized that my friend had left his truck and keys at the courts. I now faced another problem. I couldnt leave the keys in the truck. So I decided to go to the hospital and give him the keys. When I arrived, I was directed to a room where my friend and his wife were waiting. As I had thought, the room was filled with family members silently watching my friend comfort his wife. I went in and stood by the door, trying to decide what to do next. Soon a doctor appeared. He approached my friend and his wife, and in a quiet voice told them that their son had died. For a long time the two held each other and cried, unaware of the rest of us standing around in pained silence. After they had calmed themselves, the doctor suggested they spend a few moments with their son. My friend and his wife stood up and walked past their families. When they reached the door, my friend saw me standing in the corner. He came over and hugged me and started to cry. My friends wife hugged me, too, and said, “Thanks for being here.” For the rest of that morning, I sat in the emergency room of that hospital and watched my friend and his wife hold the body of their infant son, and say goodbye. Its the most important thing I have ever done. The experience taught me two lessons. First: The most important thing Ive ever done happened when I was completely helpless. None of the things I had learned in university, in three years of law school or in six years of legal practice were of any use in that situation. Something terrible was happening to people I cared about, and I was powerless to change the outcome. All I could do was standing by and watching it happen. And yet it was critical that I do just thatjust be there when someone needed me. Second: The most important thing Ive done almost didnt happen because of things I had learned in classroom and professional life. Law school taught me how to take a set of facts, break them down and organized them. These skills are critical for lawyers. When people come to us for help, theyre often stressed out and depend on a lawyer to think logically. But while learning to think, I almost forget how to feel. Today I have no doubt that I should have leapt into my car without hesitation and followed my friend to the hospital. From that experience I learned that the most important thing in life isnt the money you make, the status you attain or the honors you achieve. The_most_important_thing_in_life_is_the_kids_team_you_coach_or_the_poem_you_writeor_the_time_when_youre_just_somebodys_friend. 10. He received a phone call from Brown, telling him how much he liked his performance. His singing eventually earned him a fan base and a record contract. After releasing a popular EP (extended play密纹唱片) record in November 2009, his album My world 2.0 came out last Tuesday.Bieber sings ballads and songs about puppy love. But is he just another gooey (甜腻的) teen idol? David Malitz, a columnist with the Washington Post, doesnt think so. “If we truly want the best for American children, let us pause and give thanks for Justin Bieber,” he writes. “After years of humdrum bubblegum (乏味的摇滚舞曲) from Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, the 16yearold has thrown a candycoated wrench (扭转) into Disneys heartthrob (甜心) assembly line (生产线) by giving young fans something worth screaming their lungs out for: lovable pop songs.”From a boy who grew up below the poverty line with his divorced mom to a star who caused nearriots (近乎失控) in shopping malls, even Bieber himself cant believe his overnight fame, although his kind of success is becoming more and more common in the Internet era.Interested in hockey (冰球), the national sport of Canada, the boy once put up pictures of players on the walls of his bedroom. Cost of medical accidentsE. Cost of training medical workersF. Measures of reducing medical costs21_Physicians fees are only one reason for rising health costs in the United States. Medical research has produced many tests to diagnose, or discover patients illness. Physicians usually feel obliged to order enough tests to rule out all likely causes of a patients symptoms. A routine laboratory bill for blood tests can easily be more than $100.22_Sophisticated new machines have been developed to enable physicians to scan body organs with a clarity never before possible. One technique involves the use of ultrasoundsound waves beyond the frequencies that human beings can hearto produce images. Others use computers to capture and analyze images produced by Xrays or magnetic fields. These machines are extremely expensive: The price of a single machine can exceed one million dollars.23_New technologies also mean new personnel. Physicians, nurses and orderlies can no longer staff a hospital alone. Hospitals now require a bewildering number of technical specialists to administer new tests and operate advanced medical equipment.24_Physicians and hospitals also must buy malpractice insurance to protect themselves should they be sued for negligence by patients who feel they have been mistreated or have received inadequate care. The rates for this insurance have been raised very steeply in the last ten years, as patients have become more medically knowledgeable, and as juries sometimes awarded very large amounts of money to injured patients.25_As a result, hospital costs and physicians fees rose steadily through the 1990s. Government agencies became convinced that it was necessary to limit rising medical costs. One approach is to require hospitals to prove that a need exists for new buildings and services. Hospitals also have faced pressure to run their operations more efficiently, and to decrease the duration of hospital stays for patients receiving routine treatment or minor surgery.参考答案: A本文是一篇记叙文。作者给我们讲述了他第一次去欧洲的难忘旅行。1A细节理解题。根据第一段首句以及最后一段“Being the first airline to take me overseas”可分析,作者生活的国度是在印度(India)。 And it wasnt just the suits and changing lengths of hair the four Liverpool boys wore that had such an impact, but what they seemed to stand for.
