by singing too much.Robins are singing all nightas well as during the day,British-based researchers say.David Dominoni,of Glasgow University, said that light from street lamps, takeaway signs and homes is affecting the birds biological clocks, leading to them being wide awake when they should be asleep.Dr Dominoni, who is putting cameras inside nesting boxes to track sleeping patterns, said lack of sleep could put the birds health at risk. His study shows that when robins are exposed to light at night in the lab,it leads to some genes being active at the wrong time of day.And the more birds are exposed to light, the more active they are at night. He told people at a conference,“There have been a couple of studies suggesting they are increasing their song output at night and during the day they are still singing.Singing is a costly behaviour and it takes energy. So by increasing their song output, there might be some costs of energy.”And it is not just robins that are being kept awake by artificial light.Blackbirds and seagulls are also being more nocturnal.Dr Dominoni said,“In Glasgow where I live, gulls are a serious problem.I have people coming to me saying You are the bird expert. Can you help us kill these gulls?.During the breeding(繁殖)season, between April and June, they are very active at night and very noisy and people cant sleep.”Although Dr Dominoni has only studied light pollution, other research concluded that robins living in noisy cities have started to sing at night to make themselves heard over loud noise. However, some birds thrive(兴旺) in noisy environments.A study from California Polytechnic University found more hummingbirds in areas with heavy industrial machinery. It is thought that they are capitalising on their predators(天敌)fleeing to quieter areas.21.According to Dr Dominonis study, what causes robins to sing so much?A.The breeding season.B.The light in modern life.C.The dangerous environment.D.The noise from heavy machinery. B22.What is the researchers concern over the increase of birds song output?A.The environment might be polluted.B.The birds health might be damaged.C.The industry cost might be increased.D.The peoples hearing might be affected. B23.What does the underlined word “nocturnal” in Paragraph 5 mean?A.Active at night.B.Inactive at night.C.Active during the day.D.Inactive during the day. Blackbirdsandseagullsarealsobeingmorenocturnal.” A24.Why do some birds thrive in noisy environments?A.Because there are fewer dangers.B.Because there is more food to eat.C.Because there is less light pollution.D.Because there are more places to take shelter. 根据最后一段的“Itisthoughtthattheyarecapitalisingontheirpredators(天敌)fleeingtoquieterareas.” ABMarsWasNotAlwaysBitterlyColdScientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have reported evidence that Mars was warmer and wetter long ago than it is today. The Caltech scientists say they have directly established the temperature of Mars four billion years ago.At least, they established the surface temperature on part of the planet at that time. The researchers say it is the first such evidence to be discovered and presented. The Caltech scientists say carbonate(碳酸盐)minerals formed on Mars at about eighteen degrees Celsius. They reached the finding after studying a meteorite(陨石)that had its beginnings near the Martian surface.Today, the average temperature on Mars is sixty-three degrees below zero Celsius. The finding was reported on the website of the National Academy of Sciences.Caltech Assistant Professor Woody Fischer helped to prepare the report. He says eighteen degrees Celsius is not especially cold or hot.He says this makes the finding extremely interesting.Knowing the temperature can give scientists an idea of the climate on Mars long ago.It can also help them decide whether the planet had liquid water.Spacecrafts orbiting Mars have shown what appear to be rivers, lakebeds and mineral deposits. These pictures suggest that,at one time, water did flow there.Mars Rover vehicles and other spacecrafts have confirmed the information.Caltech Geology Professor John Eiler was another writer of the report. He says knowing the temperature of Mars from long ago provides valuable information. It shows that early in the planets history,at least part of Mars could support a climate like that of Earth. The meteorite the scientists examined is one of the oldest known rocks in the world. It is called the Allan Hills meteorite. Its name came from the place in Antarctica where it was found in 1984.The meteorite is believed to have blown loose from the Mars surface when another space rock struck its “home”.25.How did the scientists reach the finding?A.By studying Allan Hills meteorite.B.By using spacecrafts orbiting Mars.C.By studying minerals gathered on Mars.D.By studying a meteorite on the Martian surface. 根据第二段第二句“Theyreachedthefindingafterstudyingameteorite(陨石).” A26.According to the fourth paragraph, what have spacecrafts orbiting Mars done?A.Measuring the temperature of Mars.B.Taking photos of the surface of Mars.C.Confirming that there is water flowing on Mars.D.Finding where human beings will probably land on Mars. B27.How did Allan Hills meteorite get its name?A.From its original place on Mars.B.From where it was found on the Earth.C.From the name of the scientist who found it.D.From the name of the aircraft that discovered it. B28.Where can we most probably read this passage?A.In a biography of scientists.B.In a geography magazine.C.In an environment report.D.In a science report. DCThe hottest “green” toy in Germany isnt made of organic or recycled materials. This one has a solar panel and only runs if kids remember to insert bright red“energy stones” that power the space station.Germany,a pioneer in many renewable energy initiatives,is also at the forefront of creating environment-friendly toys aimed at making kids think about where energy comes from and how much of it they can use, raising awareness through play.Among them, there are hydroelectric-powered(水电动力的) toy cars, and doll houses with wind turbines(涡轮机) and rainwater catchers. The bright green“Future Planet” space station features an inner atrium(中庭) with a fan that is powered by a functioning solar cell. Its aim is to get kids to use their imagination about how energy will be created in the future.Makers and retailers believe such toys will play an increasingly important role in their futureand that of our kids.“Energy is the question of the future and we are definitely thinking about this as we move ahead,”said Judith Schweinitz,a spokeswoman for Playmobile, maker of the solar panel-fitted space station.“It is increasingly being brought into our play concept.”Green toyswhich range from those made of sustainable materials to ones like the space station that just raise environmental awarenessmake up only a sliver of the $84 billion international toy market, but their share is growing, studies indicate.Environmental research firm Earthsense, based in Syracuse,New York, predicts that green toys will account for about $1 billion,or 5 percent of U.S.toy sales in the next five years.Parents are smart and they want information about whats in the product.Thats whats really driving the market.29.The hottest “green” toy in Germany is .A.made of rubbishB.made of organic or recycled materialsC.equipped with a solar panelD.driven by an advanced motor解析:细节理解题。 C30.The purpose of making the green toys is to .A.raise kids awareness about energy and environmentB.improve kids imaginationC.give kids the knowledge of technologyD.improve the safety of toys解析:细节理解题。 A31.According to the passage, uses solar energy.A.the toy carB.the doll houseC.the dollD.the parentsC.have not been producedD.will sell well in the future解析:推理判断题。 DD“Millions of animals die each year on the US roads,” the Federal Highway Administration reports. In fact, only about 80 ocelots,an endangered wild cat, exist in the US today. The main reason?Roadkill.“Eco-passages” may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths both over and under roads.“These eco-passages can be extremely useful,so that wildlife can avoid road accidents,” said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Protection Society. But do animals actually use the eco-passages?The answer is yes.Paul Beier of Northern Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an eco-passage that went under a highway. This showed that the lions used the eco-passage.Builders of eco-passages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and around them.Animals seem to be catching on.Animals as different as salamanders(火蜥蜴)and grizzly bears are using the bridges and underpasses. The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around. You might see an animals overpass!33.The author uses the example of “ocelots” to show that .A.an increasing number of animals are killed in road accidentsB.the driving conditions have improved greatlyC.the measure for protecting wildlife fails to workD.wild animals have become more dangerous解析:作者举豹猫的例子是为了说明每年数百万的动物死在路上,故A项正确。答案:A34.From the passage,we know an eco-passage is .A.an underground path for carsB.a fence built for the safety of the areaC.a path for animals to cross the roadD.a bridge for animals to get over a river解析:eco-passage指的是专门为动物通过马路而设立的通道,故选C项。答案:C35.The author asks visitors and drivers to
