Ashenden knew several European languages and the fact that he was a writer provided excellent cover: on the pretext that he was writing a book he could, without attracting attention, visit any neutral country. It was while they were discussing this point that the Colonel said, You know you might get material that would be very useful to you in your work. Ill tell you an incident that occurred only recently. Very dramatic. A foreign government minister went down to a Mediterranean resort to recover from a cold and he had some very important documents with him that he kept in a dispatch case(公文箱). A day or two after he arrived, he picked up a beautiful blonde at some restaurant or other, and he got very friendly with her. He took her back to his hotel, and when he came to himself in the morning, the lady and the dispatch-case had disappeared. They had one or two drinks up in his room and his theory is that when his back was turned the woman slipped a drug in his glass. Do you mean to say that happened the other day? said Ashenden. The week before last. Impossible, cried Ashenden. Why! Weve been putting that incident on the stage for sixty years, weve written it in a thousand novels. Do you mean to say that life has only just caught up with us? Well, I can guarantee the truth of the story. said the Colonel, And believe me, the government has been put to no end of trouble by the loss of the documents. Well sir, if you cant do better than that in the Secret Service, sighed Ashenden, Im afraid that as a source of inspiration to the writer of fiction, its washout.56How did the Colonel suggest that Ashendens being a writer would relate to his work as a spy?A. Today tourists looking for a taste of the countrys historic lifestyle find varying levels of understated elegant in ryokan throughout the country.A typical stay starts with a greeting from the inns staff and a change from street shoes into slippers. An attendant leads guests to their rooms, where slippers are removed before walking on the rice straw flooring, called tatami. Walking slowly along behind a kimono-clad (和服) attendant on the creaky wood floods of Fukuzumiro ryokans hallways is like stepping back in time. The inn was established in 1890 by a former samurai(武士).Tim Paterson, 33, a banker living in Tokyo, has stayed at several ryokan. This New Zealand native leaves after a recent stay at Fukuzumiro. “I think its quite good mixing culture with history and not just going to see it, but living in it, staying in it.” he said. Sliding glass doors line the inns rural hallways, bringing in the sound of trickling water and the quietness of the stone and tree-filled courtyards outside.60. But its maker, Frito-Lay, thinks otherwise. “Potato chips are a snack food for the world,” said Salman Amin, the companys head of global marketing. Amin believes there is no corner of the world that can resist the charms of a Frito-Lay potato chip.Frito-Lay is the biggest snack maker in America owned by PepsiCo and accounts for over half of the parent companys $3 billion annual profits. But the U.S. snack food market is largely saturated, and to grow the company has to look overseas. Its strategy rests on two beliefs: first a global product offers economies of scale with which local brands cannot compete. And second, consumers in the 21st century are drawn to “global” as a concept. “Global” does not mean products that are consciously identified as American, but ones that consumes-especially young people are linked across cultures by shared beliefs and tastes. Potato chips are an American invention, but most Chinese, for instance, do not know that Frito-Lay is an American company. Instead, Riskey, the companys research and development head, would hope they associate the brand with the new world of global communications and business. With brand perception a crucial(决定性的) factor, Riskey ordered a redesign of the Frito-Lay logo(标识).The logo, along with the companys long-held marketing image of the “irresistibility” of its chips would help facilitate the companys global expansion. The executives acknowledge that they try to swing national eating habits to a food created in America, but they deny that amounts to economic imperialism(势力扩张). Rather, they see Frito-Lay as spreading the benefits of free enterprise across the world. “Were making products in those countries, were adapting them to the tastes of those countries, building businesses and employing people and changing lives,” said Steve Reinemund, PepsiCos chief executive.64It is the belief of Foito-Lays head of global marking that_.A. Potato chips can hardly be used as a weapon to dominate the world marketB. People all over the world enjoy eating their companys potato chipsC. The light golden color enhances the charm of their companys potato chipsD. Their company must find new ways to promote domestic sales65What do we learn about Frito-Lay from Paragraph 2? A. Its products use to be popular among overseas consumers. B. Its expansion has caused fierce competition in the snack market. C. It gives half of its annual profits to its parent company. D. It needs to turn to the world market for development.66One of the assumptions on which Frito-Lay bases its development strategy is that_. A. consumers worldwide today are attracted by global brands B. local brands cannot compete successfully with American brands C. products suiting Chinese consumers needs bring more profits D. products identified as American will have promising market value67Frito-Lays executives claim that the promoting of American food in the international market_.A. wont affect the eating habits of the local people B. will lead to economic imperialism C. will be in the interest of the local people D. wont spoil the taste of their chipsDSure enough, at that very moment as they looked back, they saw the man bend down to examine something on the pavement.
