Unit 5 Enjoying novelsUsing LanguageSpeaking and writing1 Work in groups of the same gender, and discuss what might happen in the following situations.Situation 1:Elizabeths mother is very eager for her daughter to marry a rich man. What do you think she would do if she knew that Mr Darcy had asked Elizabeth to marry him but she had refused?Situation 2 (for the girls):The only career for girls at that time was to marry as well as possible. Elizabeth has refused to marry the richest man she has met. Do you think she was wise? Give your reasons. What would you have done in her situation?Situation 3 (for the boys):Mr Darcy is so rich that he expects any girl he wants to marry to agree at once. Do you think that his idea is reasonable? Give your reasons. What do you think Mr Darcy should do now that Elizabeth has refused him? Explain your ideas. What would you have done in his situation?Situation 4:After the proposal, Elizabeth and Darcy are both amazed and upset at what has happened. It was a very emotional meeting for both of them. But they are both lucky because nobody else knows what has happened. How do you think they will behave towards each other and say to each other when they meet again? Give your reasons. What do you think you would do if you were either Elizabeth or Darcy?2 Now you are going to write about your opinion of Darcy or Elizabeth. Was their behaviour right or not? Why? What would you have done instead? Give advice on what they might do next. When you organize your work, remember to: collect your ideas based on what you discussed just now put them into an order that seems sensible to you explain your point of view in the first paragraph give each one of your points a separate paragraph finish by repeating your point of view and hoping the reader will agree with youThen swap with your partner and check their work. Examine the content, grammar and language used. Give suggestions. Swap back and revise your writing. Finally be prepared to read it to the class.*3 First, read the novel of Pride and Prejudice, paying special attention to the proposal part. Or if possible, watch the BBC film version. Second, get into pairs and make some observations on what you have just read and / or seen. The issueDifferences todayTheir way of speakingTheir clothesA young man and girl being alone togetherSuggested answers to Exercise 1:Situation 1Elizabeths mothers possible actions:1 She could refuse to talk to her daughter until she agreed to marry Mr Darcy. 2 She could insist she marry Mr Darcy. 3 She could tIv to persuade her husband to make Elizabeth marry Mr Darcy. 4 She could cry and scream about how ungrateful a daughter Elizabeth was because she could solve the familys financial problems by marrying Mr Darcy. Situation 2For the girls:Against1 I think she was unwise because Mr Darcy would have given her a comfortable life and made the position of the family secure. 2 I think she was unwise because she could have helped all the family with Mr Darcys money. This will be particularly important when her father dies and they can no longer live in their house and enjoy the same standard of living. 3 I would have married Mr Darcy so that I could have helped my family and made sure that all of them had enough money for a comfortable life too. For the girls:For 1 I think Elizabeth did the right thing because she would be very unhappy marrying a man she did not love. 2 I think Elizabeth did the right thing because it is not fair to expect someone to marry a rich person so that the rest of the family will be comfortable for the rest of their lives. 3 I would not have married Mr Darcy because I do not like his attitudes and his arrogance. He would make a very unsympathetic and unkind husband. Situation 3For the boys:Against1 I do not think Mr Darcy was reasonable. Nobody wants to hear that their family is not good enough for their future husband. 2 I do not think Mr Darcy was reasonable. He was too arrogant. 3 I think Mr Darcy must change his behaviour so that he will become more pleasant to Elizabeth and her family. 4 If I were in his situation I would try to explain to Elizabeth that I had been too hasty in my proposal to her,and that I really did like her family. For the boys:For1 I think Mr Darcy was reasonable when he spoke arrogantly to Elizabeth. After all he is very rich and can expect people to think very well of him wherever he goes. 2 I think Mr Darcy was reasonable when he behaved arrogantly to Elizabeth. He would not expect anyone to disapprove of his behaviour because he is so rich. 3 I think Mr Darcy must decide whether he likes Eliza beth enough to change his behaviour and become pleasanter and more considerate. 4 If I were in his situation I would continue to treat Elizabeth politely and try to become more friendly to her family. I would try to prove that she had the wrong idea about meand that I was not always arrogant and inconsiderate. Situation 4Future behaviour of Elizabeth and Darcy:1 I think they will both try to behave as they did before the proposal. This will avoid other people thinking that the proposal had happened. 2 I think Mr Darcy will be very polite and correct in his behaviour to try to show Elizabeth that she is wrong in her opinion of him. 3 If I were Darcy I would write a letter to Elizabeth and try and explain why I behaved as I did. 4 If I were Elizabeth I would try to avoid being in the company of Mr Darcy more than is absolutely necessary. Suggested answers to Exercise 2:Sample writing1 Mr Darcy I think Mr Darcy behaved very arrogantly. He did not show any concern for Elizabeths feelings but assumed that his opinion of her family was the correct one. Despite being rude to her, he still thought that she should agree to marry him. I am glad that Elizabeth refused him. 2 Elizabeth I think Elizabeth behaved very bravely. She was not persuaded to agree to marry Mr Darcy just because of his money. She was not persuaded to marry Mr Darcy in order to secure her familys comfort. She showed him her true feelings about his arrogance and explained her dislike of him. Suggested answers to Exercise 3:The issueDifferences todayTheir way of speakingNow:men and women can talk freely together on almost all issues (includin
