Gerald had now for some time been hoping to find an inn in which to spend the night. Black clouds were gathering over the sky. Gerald began to run. But it was too late. Down came the rain. He could hardly see now, for the rain seemed to have put out the sun, already almost gone. Gerald walked on through the darkness and rain in an unknown country. “Fool, to leave Margaret,” said he.The darkness grew thicker. He was entering a forest. Great branches lay across the narrow road, and he felt his way through what seemed to be an endless dark cave with a rough floor on which he fell again and again. At last, in the center of the forest he found a house with light, and loud voices inside it. He went to the door, opened it slowly and put his head in. He drew his head back quickly, as if something had hit him in the face; and he stepped back into the rain and darkness. He had looked into a large but low room, in the center of which was a great round fireplace. Around this fireplace clothes were hanging up to dry; some were hanging on ropes, and some were hanging on the persons to whom they belongedfarm laborers. These clothes, carrying in them the rain of but one day, but the dirt of a whole lifetime, gave out a terrible smell in thick clouds.Gerald was like most poets and workers in the fine arts; his eyes saw more than other eyes did; and his nose smelt more than other noses! But the rain poured down on him, and the light of the fire looked very pleasant. He could not force his way in all at once through the thick air, but he returned to it again and again as a bird circling round a light. At last he discovered that the various smells did not entirely mix. Smell of family was strongest in the two corners; boiled farm laborers held the center; and food was a ruler among the noisy company by the window. This last was the smallest as well as least powerful smell.36. This passage mainly tells_.A. Gerald s unusual experience in the dark forest on a rainy nightB. Gerald s meeting with Margaret in the dark forestC. Gerald s trouble in the forestD. Gerald s seeking for a star in the forest37. What can you suggest from the passage?A. Gerald is an artist rather than a farm worker.B. Gerald is more imaginative than ordinary people.C. The sight in the room reminds Gerald of many things.D. The farmers in the room are also passers-by as Gerald.38. What made Gerald step back from the house in the forest?A. People in it were unfriendly to him.B. The clothes in it gave out a terrible smellC. Gerald was hit in the face by the people in it.D. Gerald looked down upon the people in it.39. What does “This last” in the last sentence probably mean?A. Smell of the food. B. Smell of the family.C. The noisy company. D. Boiled farm laborers.(B)There are 25 000 kinds of bees identified (确认) in the world. The most well-known are the honey bee. In the United States there are known 3500 species. Most bees do not live in large groups, they are solitary (独居的) bees. The honey bee is not a native of the United States. The first bees were brought to the U. S. from Holland. Later other bees were brought from many other countries. South America had some honey bees, but they did not produce much honey. When honey bees were brought to the United States, native Americans called them white mans flies. Soon bees became a known sight in America. In Brazil, honey bees did not survive well and scientists brought African bees to Brazil. These bees were found to be very aggressive (好斗的) and mistakenly escaped into the wild. These bees are very common in Brazil now.Beekeepers raise bees for honey, but more often they raise them to pollinate crops. Pollination occurs when the bee lands on a flower and some of the pollen (花粉) gets stuck to the bees hairy legs. The next time the bee lands, some of the pollen falls off her legs and onto another flower, allowing it to reproduce.Beekeepers have been raising bees for their honey for thousands of years. The first beekeepers kept their bees in hollow logs or clay pots. Now they keep the bees in wooden hives. When beekeepers raise bees for honey, they must remove part of the hive to retrieve (获取) the honey. They must calm the bees by using a special smoker. The smoke is puffed out around the bees and the bees move slower and are not as aggressive.40. Whats the best title for the passage?A. An Introduction to BeesB. Why Bees Are KeptC. And that divide does exist today: My wife and I lectured about this looming danger twenty years ago. What was less visible then, however were the new, positive forces that work against the digital divide. These are reasons to be optimistic. There are technological reasons to hope the digital divide will narrow. As the Internet becomes more and more commercialized, it is in the internet of business to universalize accessafter all, the more people online, the more potential customers there are. More and more governments, afraid their countries will be left behind, want to spread Internet access. Within the next decade or two, one to two billion people on the planet will be netted together. As a result, I now believe the digital divide will narrow rather than widen in the years ahead, and that is very good news because the Internet may be more powerful tool for combating world poverty that weve ever had.Of course, the use of the Internet isnt the only way to defeat poverty. And the Internet is not the only tool we have. But it has great potential (潜力).To take advantage of this tool, some-impoverished countries will have to get over their outdated anti-colonial prejudices (偏见) with respect to foreign investment (投资). Countries that still think foreign investment is an invasion their sovereignty (主权) might well study the history of infrastructure (the basic structural foundations of a society) in the United States. When the United States built its industrial infrastructure, it didnt have the capital to do so. And that is why Americas Second Wave infrastructureincluding roads, harbors, highways, ports and so on-were built with foreign investment. The English, the Germans, the Dutch French were investing in Britains former colony. They finished them. Immigrant Americans built them. Guess who owns them now? The Americans. I believe the same thing would be true in places like Brazil or anywhere else for that matter The more foreign capital you have helping you build your Third Wave infrastructure, which today is an electronic infrastructure, the better off youre going to be. That doesnt mean lying down and becoming fooled, or letting foreign corporations run uncontrolled. But it does mean recognizing how important they can be in building the energy and telecom structures needed to take full advantage of the Internet.46. Digital divide is something _.A. getting worse because of the InternetB. the rich countries are responsible forC. the world must guard againstD. considered positive today47. Governments attach importance to the Internet because it _.A. offers economic potentialsB. can bring foreign funds (资金)C. can Soon wipe out world povertyD. connects people all over the world48. The writer mentioned the case of the United States to justify the policy of _.A. providing financial (财政) support overseasB. preventing foreign capitals controlC. building industrial infrastructureD. accepting foreign investment49. It seems that now a countrys economy depends much on_.A. how well-developed it is electronicallyB. whether it is prejudiced against immigrantsC. whether it adopts (采用)Americas industrial patternD. how much control it has over foreign corporations50. The writer implies that Internet is_.A. not popular with all over the worldB. very usefulC. criticized by some expertsD. used in impoverished(E)It is very interesting to note where the debate about diversity (多元化) is taking place. It is taking place primarily in political circles. Here at the College Fund. We have a 1ot of contact with top corporate (公司的) leaders; none of them is talking about getting rid of those instruments that produce diversity. In fact, they say that if their companies are to compete in the global village and in the global market place, diversity is an imperative. They also say that the need for talented, skilled Americans means we have to expand the pool of potential (潜在的) employees. And in looking at where birth rates are growing and at where the population is shifting, corporate America understands that expanding the pool means promoting policies that help provide skills to more minorities, more women and more immigrants. Corporate leaders know that if that doesnt occur in our society, they will not have the engineers, the scientists, the lawyers, or the business managers hey will need.Likewise, I dont hear people in the academy saying. “Lets go backward. Lets go back to the good old days, when we had a meritocracy (英才教育). (不拘一格选人才)” (Which was never true-we never had a meritocracy, although weve come closer to it in the last 30 years). I recently visited a great little college in New York where the campus has double its minority population in the last six years. I talked with an African American who has been a professor there for a long time, and she remembers that when she first joined the community, there were fewer than a handful of minorities on campus. Now, all of us feel the university is better because of the diversity. So where we hear this debate is primarily in political circles and in the medianot in corporate board rooms or on college campuses.51. The word imperative most probably refers to something_.A. superficial (肤浅的) B. remarkableC. debatable D. important52. Which of the following groups of people still differ in their views on diversity?A. Minorities. B. Politicians.C. Professors. D. Managers.53. High corporate leaders seem to agree to promote diversity so as to_.A. lower the rate of unemploymentB. win equal political rights for minoritiesC. be competitive in the world marketD. satisfy the demands of a growing population54. It can be inferred from the passage that_.A. meritocracy can never be realized without diversityB. American political circles will not accept diversityD. minorities can only enter the field where no debate is heard abou
