the efforts?Any volunteers?S1:Let me have a try.The governments efforts to fight poverty and improve health care cover several aspects:the need to help people get rid of poverty,make sure that sick people get treated properly,and provide medical insurance for the poor.T:Quite right.Why does medical insurance occupy an important position among the many aspects of the governments efforts to fight poverty?S2:Because if low-income families cannot afford to purchase medical insurance,other measures to reduce poverty will not succeed.T:Excellent.OK,now lets revise the passage together by listening to the tape of it.While listening,pay attention to the useful words and expressions.(After the students listen to it,teacher shows the following on the screen.)Fill in the blanks with right phrases GrammarT:Now please look at the sentences on the screen and compare them to find the differences between them.(Teacher shows the following on the screen and allows the students enough time to prepare.)1.If I had had insurance,the sickness wouldnt have caused such a big problem.2.If someone becomes seriously ill,the family is forced into poverty.3.If low-income families cannot afford to purchase medical insurance,other measures to reduce poverty will not succeed.T:OK.Are you ready?Ss:Yes.T:Well,Liu Fang,you try please.S4:The first sentence talks about an “unreal” past situation using the Subjunctive Mood.T:How do you know?S4:By the special verb forms in the sentence.That is,the past perfect tense “had done” is used in the if-clause,“would have done” in the main clause.(Bb:If.had done.,.would have done.)T:What about the other two sentences?S4:Both of them talk about real situations with normal verb forms.T:You are excellent.Thank you.Sit down,please.Then how are the present and future situations expressed using the Subjunctive Mood?S5:The past tense is used in the if-clause and “would+an infinitive” in the main clause.And we use “were” instead of “was” in the “wish”?S6:A past perfect tense is used to express a past meaning,a past tense is used to express a present meaning and “would+an infinitive” to express a future meaning.(Bb:.wish.had
