Reference for Teaching.异域风情Study Gives High Marks to “Teach for America”Teach for America is a program that has provided more than ten thousand teachers to schools across the country.They have taught more than a million children from poor families.Teach for America trains recent college graduates to work in low-economic schools in different areas of the country.They are expected to teach for at least two years.A student at Princeton University in Princeton,New Jersey,had the idea for Teach for America in 1989.Wendy Kopp wrote a paper in which she proposed a national teaching organization.People supported her idea.Money from major companies helped launch the program.The program has also received money from the federal government.And money comes from people and businesses in areas where the teachers work.Wendy Kopp still leads Teach for America.Some education experts have criticized the lack of experience that the young teachers have before they begin work.But now the Mathematica Policy Research organization in Princeton has examined the effects of Teach for America.The Mathematica study took place in six areas around the country between 2002 and 2020.It involved nearly two thousand children in seventeen schools.Researchers tested the students at the beginning and end of the school year.They compared the results of students who had Teach for America teachers with those who did not.The study found that both groups did equally well on average in reading.The Teach for America group scored higher in mathematics.But two times as many of the Teach for America teachers reported that physical conflicts among students were a serious problem.Even so,the study found that the two groups of teachers had similar rates of student expulsions and suspensions.The researchers had praise for the Teach for America teachers.They say the new educators had more success than teachers with an average of six years of classroom experience.Most of the Teach for America teachers said they planned to teach for just a few yeas.About ten percent said they expected to teach until retirement.By comparison,that was true of sixty percent of teachers outside the criticism.我们欢迎批评。(4)用作形容词,“受欢迎的,令人愉快的”We had the feeling that we were not welcome at the meeting.我们感到人家不欢迎我们到会。Your suggestion is most welcome to us.你的建议提得很好。2.time常见句型归纳(1)Its time for.“是的时候了”Its time for breakfast.该吃早饭了。(2)Its time for sb.to do sth.“是某人做某事的时候了”Its time for us to start.我们该动身了。(3)Its time+that-clause“该了”含有“不该再延迟”之意。在time前可加high加强语气。that从句中的谓语动词多为过去式,也可为“should+动词原形”,that可省去,should不可省。Its (high) time (that) we left.=Its (high) time (that) we should leave.我们真该走了。(4)It/This/That is/was the first/second.time+that-clause“这是某人第一/二次(做某事)”如果主句谓语动词的时态为一般现在时,则从句中谓语动词为现在完成时;如果主句谓语动词的时态为一般过去时,则从句中谓语动词为过去完成时。Its the third time (that) I have come to the park.这是我第三次来这个公园。That was the second time (that) I had seen the film.那是我第二次看这部电影。(5)each time,every time,the first time,the last time,next time,by the time,all the time,the moment,the minute,the instant,the year均可引导时间状语从句,这时它们起连接词的作用。Each time I call on him,he is out.每次我去找他,他都不在。Dont stop to consult dictionaries every time you come to a word or phrase you dont know.不要每次遇到不认识的单词和短语就停下来去查字典。I didnt like time.把书递给我,每次两本。(2)at the same time同时The two little boys reached the finish line at the same time.这两个小男孩同时到达了终点线。(3)at one time以前,曾经;同时At one time I lived in Japan.我以前曾住在日本。They all tried to talk at one time.他们同时抢着讲话。(4)from time to time间或、时常、不时地Ill see you from time to time.我会常来看你的。(5)in time 及时;迟早、最终We were just in time to catch the bus.我们正好赶上那班车。If you keep on,you will succeed in time.如果坚持下去,总有一天你会成功的。(6)on time按时、准时The train pulled in on time.火车准时进站。(7)at all times一直,随时Im at your service at all times.我随时为您效劳。(8)at no time决不,在任何时候都不At no time have I said such a time.你很快就会好的。.词语辨析1.project,works(1)project既可以表示大型的水利、建筑工程,也可以表示国家、政府推行的具有政治意义的抽象工程。a water conservancy project水利工程Hope Project希望工程The project seems able to be carried on though lack of capital.这项工程似乎能够进行下去,虽然有点资金短缺。(2)works通常只表示建筑工程、军事工程public works市政工程the Ministry of Works建筑工程部2.collect,gather(1)gather“收集,聚集”,可以指把人也可以指把分散的物件,或抽象的东西,如力量、印象等聚集起来,也指采集花、蜜和采集果实。The old man gathered the children for a picnic.老人把孩子们聚在一起野炊。Im gathering the impression of the visit as material for an article.我正在收集关于参观访问的印象,作为一篇文章的材料。(2)collect“收集,采集”着重计划性、选择性,指一般的“收集”,可以和gather相互替用,指有计划、有条理,为某种目的而进行的仔细地、有选择地收集时,不可用gather。Collect the books and put them in a pile on my desk.把这些书收到一起,摞成一摞,放在我的桌子上。Many people are interested in stamp-collecting.很多人对集邮感兴趣。作不及物动词用时,两词可互用。Clouds are gathering(=collecting).云聚拢起来了。A crowd soon gathered(=collected) round
