Its not because therere lots of criminals stealing cars. Rather, its because of good-hearted neighbors who want to share their harvest. Especially with this years large crop, leaving a car unlocked in my neighborhood is an invitation for someone to stuff it with zucchinia kind of dark green skin vegetable. My sister, Sharon, recently had a good year of tomatoes. She and her family had eaten and canned so many that they begun to feel their skin turn slightly red. She decided to share her blessings. She called everyone she knew. When that failed, she began asking everyone in the neighborhood, eventually finding a neighbor delighted to have the tomatoes. “Feel free to take whatever you want,” Sharon told her. She felt happy that she could help someone and that the food didnt go to waste.A few days later, the neighbor appeared in her house, holding a hot loaf of bread. She smiled, “I wanted to thank you for the tomatoes, and I have to admit I took a few other things too.”Sharon couldnt think of anything else that had been worth harvesting. The neighbor went on saying, “You had some of the prettiest zucchini Ive ever seen.”Sharon was confused. They hadnt even planted any zucchini. But her neighbor insisted there were bright-green zucchini in her garden. Sharon decided to go to see where the zucchini had grown. The two of them walked into the backyard. When the neighbor pointed at the long green vegetables, Sharon smiled, “Well, actually, those are cucumbers that we never harvested, because they got too big, soft and bitter for eating.”The neighbor looked at Sharon, shock written all over her face. Then, smiling, she held out the bread she had shared all over the neighborhood. “I brought you a nice loaf of cucumber bread. I hope you will like it.”21. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphone, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic (怀旧的) skill. However, while todays educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful-both in school and in life.Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says its important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks-both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2020, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a students writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write. “Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.” Berninger said.Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe “those words in the mind into written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in the “minds eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Berninger, but also to spot spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct then over time.“In our computer age, some people believe that we dont have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,” she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they wont have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.”25What makes writing by hand a thing of the past?A. The absence of blackboard in classroom.B. The use of new technologies in teaching.C. The lack of practice in handwriting.D. The popular use of smartphones.26Berningers study published in 2020 _.A. discussed the importance of writing speed.B. found that good essays are made up of long sentences.C. indicated that students prefer to write with a pen and paper.D. focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer.27Which of the following best shows the role of spelling?A. Spelling improves ones memory of words.B. Spelling ability is closely related to writing ability.C. Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas.D. Spelling slows down finding exact words to express ideas.28What does “minds eye” in paragraph 5 mean?A. Imagination. B. Soul C. Picture. D. Window.COn numbers of occasions when something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, “Well, its so-and-sos fault.” or “I know Im late, but its not my fault; the car broke down.” It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and can do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how toremedythe situation. This is the winners key to success.Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you useful phone numbers, so you can call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or dont rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well. This is what being a winner is all about-creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners dont have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on whose fault it is. Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.29. The underlined word “remedy” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _.A. avoid B. accept C. improve D. approve30. When your colleague brings about a problem, you should _.A. ask a more able colleague for helpB. blame him for his lack of responsibilityC. find a better way to handle the problemD. tell him to find the cause of the problem31. When problems occur, winners take them as _.A. excuses for their failuresB. barriers to greater powerC. challenges to their colleaguesD. chances for self-development32.
