莆田二十四中2020上学期期中考试卷高二英语第I卷第一部 听力(共两节,满分30分)略第二部分阅读理解第一节(共15个小题,每个小题2分,满分30分)阅读下面 短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项。AArriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband, Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children.During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport(护照).He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husbands name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the footpath. My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents(文件). Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend. That family not only restored the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way. 21. What did Rashid plan to do after his arrival in Sydney?A. Find a house B. Take a vacationC. Go shoppingD. Join his family22. The girls parents got Rashids phone number from_.A. a stranger in Sydney B. a Sydney policemanC. a friend of his familyD. a letter in his papers23. What does the underlined word “restored” in the last praragraph mean?A. Gave back B. ShowedC. Sent out D. DeliveredBToday well talk about reading. When we read a text, our eyes move across a page in short, quick movements. We recognize words usually when our eyes still fixate(停留,凝视). Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span(视幅). The length of time for which the eyes stop varies from person to person. It also varies within any parson according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. In addition, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness.Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the page. As a result of this misleading emphasis(强调) on the purely visual aspects of reading, many exercises have been designed to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For example, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for a tenth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side. Such word patterns are often formed in the shape of pyramids(金字塔), so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive(连续的) fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but its one thing to improve a persons ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach which trains a person to read isolated(孤立的) words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous text.24.The time of the recognition span can be affected by the following factors except _.A: ones purpose in readingB: lighting and tirednessC: the length of a group of words D: ones familiarity with the text25.The author may believe that reading _.A: demands a deeply-participating mindB: requires a reader to take in more words at each fixationC: requires a reader to see words more quicklyD: demands more eyes than mind26.What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in the second paragraph?A: The reading exercises mentioned cant help improve reading.B: The reading exercises mentioned have done a great job so far.C: The ability to see words is not needed for an efficient reading.D: The reading exercises mentioned are useless for reading.27. Which of the following is NOT true? _.A: The emphasis on the purely visual aspects is misleadingB: The visual span is a word or a group of words we see each timeC: The eye training will help readers in reading a continuous textD: Many experts began to question the efficiency of eye trainingCSkin-diving(轻装潜水) is a new sport today. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled(翻耕的)soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground. As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden. I remember Dad pushing the tiller(耕作机)ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow corn, and our favorite- red tomatoes. As I grew into a teenager, I didnt get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. As Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his garden. But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of multicolored vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed them, he simply let them be. He only planted tomatoes. For the first few years after he died, I couldnt even bear to look at anyones garden without having strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up a fair amount of soil, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.32.
