AWhen I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm and in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems, too. One big disadvantage is money- it costs too much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of travelling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous. Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment(娱乐活动). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising-and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away. Is life better in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back soon.1. What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?A. Staying on the farm.B. Moving to the countryside.C. Leaving home for the city.D. Running away from the school.2. In the passage, the advantages of living in the city the writer told us are _.A. more activities; more jobs; more goods; more shopsB. more activities; more shops; more jobs; more peopleC. more people; more cars; more activities; more shopsD. more shops; more jobs; more parks; more tall buildings3. Where is the writer living now?A. In the countryside.B. In the city.C. In the school.D. Not mentioned in the passage.4. Which is TRUE according to the passage?A. City life is better for teens or twenties.B. City life is better than countryside life.C. City life is not better than countryside life.D. City life is better for those who have small children.B In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair-weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities(品质)of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠). Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other persons place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener. At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults(过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me. Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favour, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me. There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humour(幽默), too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me. When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, understanding and humourous, I know Ive found a friend!5. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, Ive found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, its the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors- silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want. Its fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just cant provide.Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a pack of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didnt want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.9. The author took great pleasure in biking.D In the winter months-December, January and February- the temperature in most of Canada usually stays below 0. However, in some parts of Canada, such as southern British Columbia, the temperature rarely goes below 0. In most of the regions in Canada where people live, snow will be on the ground from mid-December to the middle of March. We will be really happy when we get a new car or a big house or get married The thing is, if we are continually searching for happiness in the outside world, we will be very disappointed. It seems as if we are forever chasing it and it is always just one step away. Happiness is a short state of mind, just like the state of sadness or joy or anger. It would not be possible for us to be in a happy state 24 hours a day. If you think that sounds laughable, think about being at a funeral when everyone is mourning. Would it feel right to go about with a huge smile on your face? What we go through in our lives helps us grow and understand the value of happiness. We need to be able to respond in all manner of ways according to what we are dealing with at any given time. All emotions and states are part of the life. Happiness can be found in reaching out and being in relationship with people. Though time or money may be lost in helping others, these become our happy memories. Happiness is a dance with whatever in front of you. It is a deep connection to everything around you. It does not come from expecting others to bring you joy for others. If you want to experience happiness more often, see what you can do to put a smile on someone elses face each day and notice how much happier you feel when you have achieved that. Happiness is not to be found in material possessions. It is freely available to everyone at any time. All that is required to experience happiness is that you place your focus on moments in your life that make you smile.17. From the second paragraph we can infer that_. A. you may as well smile at a funeral B. we should only keep happiness in mind C. expression must be fit for the proper situation D. we can be in a happy state 24 hours a day18. According to the author, happiness can show up when _. A. you dont have to work B. you expect others to bring you joy C. a good relationship is maintained D. you are free to do anything19. The underlined words “reaching out” in Paragraph 4 mean_. A. stretching ones hand B. offering help to someone C. trying to get something D. realizing ones dream20. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 5? A. Smiling to others is rarely available to everyone. B. Making others smile can create ones own happiness. C. Achieving possessions leads to ones own satisfaction. D. Experiencing happiness is to smile to others. F Hair has always been an important sign of beauty. Whether long or short, curly or straight, hair often gets a lot of attention. Each hair on a persons head grows from a single tube-like hole in the skin called a follicle(毛囊). The average person has about one hundred thousand hair follicles. The part of the hair under the skin is known as the hair root. The hair sticking out from the skin is known as the hair shaft(毛干). At the base of the hair root is a small ball-like formation called a bulb. This is where new cells are formed. As new cell form, the old cells are cut off from the blood supply and begin to form a hard protein called keratin(角蛋白). Keratin is the same protein found in our skin and nails. These dead cells and keratin are what make up the hair shaft. This whole process is what causes hair to grow. Each hair grows independently of other hairs. There are three periods of hair growth. Not all hairs experience the same period of growth at the same time. The period of active growth is called Anagen. During this period, hair grows at a rate of about three tenths millimeters a day, or one centimeter a month. The Catagen period of hair growth comes next. It is then that hair growth begins to slow down. This period usually lasts two or three weeks. Finally, hair growth comes to a complete stop and the hairs begin to fall out. This period is known as Telogen. It affects about 15 percent of all hairs at a time. On average, a person loses between 50 and 100 hairs every day. Once the Telogen period has ended, the hair growth process begins again. Your genes control how fast or how long your hair will grow. Some people have a longer than usual Anagen growth period. These people may be able to grow more hair than the average person.21. From the passage we know that _. A. a person loses at least 50 hairs a day B. people have the same number of hair follicles C. new cells are usually formed under the skin D. there is also keratin in our skin and nails22. What plays a key role in the speed and time of your hair growth? A. Your follicles B. Your genes C. Your cells D. Your bulbs23. Which of the following shows the correct order of hair growth? A. Anagen-Catagen-Telogen-Anagen B. Catagen-Telogen-Anagen-Catagen C. Telogen-Anagen-Catagen-Telogen D. Anagen-Telogen-Catagen-Anagen24. If you grow more and longer hair, it shows _.
