Im talking about the arrival of freezing temperatures.There will come a time when we need to protect some of our landscape plants fromfreezingtemperatures.And sinceno one reliablypredictst
2、heweather,now isa goodtime to get ready.Many calls I receive are from the gardeners who confuse frosts and freezes. Whileboth are cold weather events, they are completely different. Frosts relate to theamount of water in the air. When air temperatures drop low enough, the water inthe air condenses (
3、 凝结 ) onto surfaces asdew(small drops ofwater). Anexample ofthis is a cold glass of iced tea sweating on a hot summer day.Frosts typically occur when the sky is clear and the wind is calm. Heat absorbedby thesoiland plantsduringtheday goes intothe airatnight.Calm windconditionsallow surface temperat
4、ures to drop below freezing while higherelevations( 高度)remain warmer.If the surface temperature and dew point are below freezing, icecrystals(结晶体) formon thecoolsurfaces.Sometimes the airis too dryforicecrystalsto form,but a frost event has still occurred. A frost can occur when the air temperaturei
5、s above 32 F(0C). A freeze occurs when a mass of cold air moves into the area.This weatherevent oftenhappens under windy conditionswitha cloudcover.A typicalfreezecaseis very different from afrost. When the outsideair temperature fallsbelow 32 F for a certain number of hours, a freeze can cause plan
6、t damage. A hardfreeze occurs with temperatures below 28F for a certain number of hours.So what can a gardener do to prepare for these events? Fortunately, we have lotsof resourcestokeep us informedon theweather.TV, radioand weatherwebsitescanhelp us know when one is expected, though even then we ca
7、n be fooled.A coupleofyears ago,Ifollowedthe TV forecastthatcalledfor36F,and Ididn tcovermy lettuceplants.WhenIwoke up thenextmorning,itwas 26F outside.It sa good thingmost ofourleafygreen, cool-seasonvegetablescan toleratesome fairlylow temps.So knowingthecoldiscoming,hereare some tipstohelpyourlan
8、dscapeplants and winter vegetables bundle up.Make sure your plants are well watered just before a cold weather event. As waterfreezes, it releases heat that protects the root system during cold snaps. Plantsgrown in containers have the advantage of being portable. When temperatures droptoward freezi
9、ng and below, an easy solution is simply moving the plants into thehouseorgaragefora coupleofdays.Ifmovingthe plantsinsideisnotan option,simplyplacethem up againstthehouseforsome protection.West-and south-facingwalls are best, as they absorb and release more heat energy from the sun.Maintain2 to 3 i
10、nchesof mulch ( 护根 )around thebase oflandscapeplantstoprotectwaterand actas a blanketfortheroots.Cover in-groundplantswithplasticsheets,cloth,boxes orsomethingsimilar.Ideally,theleavesshouldnot touchthe coveringbecause frost and ice will form on these surfaces.1Whatever method you use, just be ready

I knew I did
18、nt want to raise my kids in the“life isa battle ”. But when I asked myself the question of how I can raise happy childrenwith an optimistic view of life, the answer I realized was connected with happyparents. And if I didnt feel consistently happy or understand the sources of myown happiness, then h
19、ow could I possibly set the right example to my children andpass this on? Because I lackedtherightskillset and knowledge,Isetout todiscover2new tools that I now apply to raising my kids.One of the first things I learned is you can actually choose to be happy. We havemore control over happiness than
20、we think. We need to develop habits that fosterhappiness.Thisallowsus to set a higherbaselineof happiness and be abletoregainit quicker when life gets us down. One such habit I develop at home is a gratitudepractice.Happinessstartswithrecognizingthevalue and goodness inourown lives.Every night,my ki
21、dsand Isaywhatwe arethankfulfor.Each one ofus takesa turnas we go around the room recalling small things from our day to be thankful for,something as simple as“the fun conversation I had”, or big things like familyand health.
