That'sabouttochange.Afterthe2000census,theU.S.Governmentshouldhaveabetteridea.In1997,theOfficeofManagementandBudget,whichoverseesfederalstatisticalpractices,approvedadirectiveallowingpeopletocheekasmanyracialboxesastheybelieveapplytothem.Theshiftwasacompromisebetweenthedemandsofsomeinterestgroupsthatwantedtheadditionofa"multiracial"box,andthosethatobjectedtoanychange,fearingdilutionoftheirnumbers.
