1GENERAL
Thisstandardpresentstherequirementsforwaterdispersed,elastomericcompoundsforuseonthreadedfasteners.
1.1Purpose
Thismaterialisintendedforsealingthethreadsoffastenerstopreventtheleakageofengineoiland/orenginecoolant.Thematerialispre-appliedtothefastenerataconverterfacility,andthethreadedfastenersaresuppliedtoproductionwiththedriedsealercoatingin-placeonthethreadpath.Thesealingfunctionisaccomplishedwhenthefastenerisengagedandthesealermaterialfillsthevoidswithinthethreadpathofthematingparts.Typicalapplicationsincludeoilgalleryplugs,andwaterholecylinderheadplugs.
1.2CoverageofthisStandard
ThisstandardisintendedasameansofcontrolonthesealerandisnottobeinterpretedasaPerformanceStandardcoveringsealercoatedfasteners.ProductionpartsutilizingthissealershallmeettherequirementsspecifiedinPF-6157.
ItisrecommendedthatthereleasingEngineeringDepartmentconducttestingasnecessary,toqualifythefunctionalperformanceofthissealantonthefinishedassembly,priortorelease.
AnyrequirementsissuedbythereleasingEngineeringDepartmentandspecifiedonthereleasingdocumentshalltakeprecedenceovertherequirementsspecifiedinthisstandard.
2.0MATERIALCHARACTERISTICS
Thepre-appliedsealershallbeofacolorthatcontrastswiththethreadedparttoaccommodateinspection.
Thesealersdefinedbythisstandardareintendedtobepre-appliedbyanoutsidesourceinliquidform,whichwhendried,willformanon-tacky,easytohandlefilm.
ThesealershallbeappliedtothethreadedpartsbyautomatedequipmentatthelocationspecifiedonCATIA,oronotherEngineeringreleasedocuments.Thesupplierapplyingthesealertothethreadedpartsshalldoitatthedirectionofthesealersource,toinsuremeetingtherequirementsofthespecification.
Thethreadedpartswithpre-appliedsealershallbedrytothetouchatthetimeofusagetopreventtransferofsealertotheoperator,ortopreventpartsadheringtoeachotherinshippingcontainers.Whencombinedwiththematingthreadsthereshallbenoflakingofthesealerfromtheassembly.
Thesealershallnothaveanobjectionableornoxiousodor.Priortoapproval,thesealershallbereviewed

withtheIndustrialHygieneandSafetyDepartment,FCAUSLLC,toensurethatthematerialscontainedinthesealerandthecontemplatedusethereofaredeemedtobenon-objectionable.Thesuppliershallproperlylabelthematerialstatinganyhazardouspropertiesandprecautionstobetakeninusageofthesealer.
2.1ShelfLife
Itshallbethesuppliersresponsibilitytomakewrittenshelfliferecommendationsincludingstorageduration,storageambientconditions,andanyotherspecialhandlingrequirementsapplyingtoshipmentandstoragetotheusingfacilitiesandtheOrganicMaterialsEngineeringDepartment,FCAUSLLC.
Theusershallstorethebulkliquidformofthismaterial(priortoapplication)inclosedcontainerswithintherecommendedstorageambientconditions,awayfromallsourcesofheatanddirectsunlight.Innocaseshallthematerialbefrozensuchthatthiswilladverselyaffectmaterialperformance.Thematerialsexpirationdate(bulkdrumstockpriortopartapplication)shallnotbelessthan2monthswhenstoredatambientplanttemperaturesrangingbetween18to43°C(65to110°F).Specialstorageconsiderationsshouldbemadeifwideswingsintemperatureareexpectedtooccuronafrequentbasis.Storageinshippingtrailersorstorageatcontinuouselevatedtemperatureconditionsgreaterthan43°C(110°F)shallbeavoided.Consulttheapprovedsupplierforadditionalinformationrelativetostoragelimitations.
Threadedpartspre-coatedwiththesealershallbesuitableforproductionuseforatleast12monthswhenstoredinoriginalpackagingattemperaturesrangingfrom18to43°C(65to110°F).Whentestedatanytimeduringthe12monthperiodthepartswithsealershallmeettherequirementshereinspecified.
Whentestedatanytimewithinthelistedexpirationdate,thematerialshallmeetalltherequirementsspecifiedwithinthisMaterialStandard.Allmaterialstoredinexcessofthelistedexpirationdateshallberemovedfromproductionanddisposedofproperly.
