(I)LanguageCompetenceObjectives
Studentswillbeabletoaccuratelyread,spellandusewordsdescribinganimalssuchas“animal,panda,tiger,elephant,koala,lion,giraffe,cute,lazy,smart,beautiful,scary”.
Studentswilllearntousethesentencepattern“Whydoyoulike...?Becausethey're...”toaskaboutandexpressthereasonsforlikingacertainanimal,andbeabletoapplyitproficientlyinreal-lifecommunication.
Studentswillmasterthecorrectpronunciationofnewwordsandsentencepatterns,especiallypayattentiontotheaccuracyofvowelandconsonantsounds,aswellasphoneticphenomenasuchasliaisonandintonationinsentences.
(II)LearningAbilityObjectives
Cultivatestudents'abilitytolearnnewvocabularyindependentlythroughpreviewing,consultingmaterials,etc.,andimprovetheirlearninginitiative.
Throughlisteningandspeakingexercises,trainstudents'abilitytoimitatepronunciationandsummarizepronunciationrules,andenhancetheirlisteningandspeakingskills.

Playavideoofvariousanimalsinthezoo.Afterthevideo,askstudents,“Whatanimalsdidyouseeinthevideo?Doyoulikeanimals?”Guidestudentstorecallthevideocontentandintroducethethemeofthislesson,“Animalfriends”.
Showsomepartialpicturesofanimalsandletstudentsguesswhatanimalstheyaretoarousestudents'interest.
(II)VocabularyTeaching(10minutes)
Usepicturestoshowanimalssuchas“panda,tiger,elephant,koala,lion,giraffe”onebyone,teachthecorrespondingwords,andexplainthepronunciationandspellingofthewords.Forexample,whenteaching“panda”,emphasizethepronunciationof“a”.
Showdescriptivewordsforanimalssuchas“cute,lazy,smart,beautiful,scary”.Combinepicturesandactionstohelpstudentsunderstand.Forexample,showapictureofapandaeatingbambooandsay“Pandasarecute.”whilemakingacutegesture.
Leadstudentstoreadthevocabulary.Usevariousways,suchasreadingaloudinchorus,readinginachain,etc.,toensurethatstudentscanpronounceaccurately.Then,letstudentsworkinpairstocheckeachother'spronunciationandspelling.
(III)SentencePatternTeaching(10minutes)
Createasituation:Supposeweareinthezoo.Theteacherasksastudent,“Whydoyoulikepandas?”Guidethestudenttoanswer,“Becausethey'recute.”RepeatthisQ&Aseveraltimestoletstudentsunderstandthesentencestructure.
Write“Whydoyoulike...?Becausethey're...”ontheblackboardandexplaintheusageofthesentencepattern.Emphasizethat“Why”isusedtoaskforreasons,and“Because”isusedtoanswer.
Letstudentsworkinpairstoimitatethedialogue.Onestudentasksthereasonforlikingacertainanimal,andtheotheranswers.Theteacherwalksaroundandcorrectsmistakes.
(IV)PronunciationTeaching(5minutes)
Playtherecordingofthewordsandsentencesin1a.Letstudentslistenforthefirsttimetogetanoverallsenseofthepronunciationandintonation.Whenlisteningforthesecondtime,askstudentstofollowtherecordingandimitatethepronunciationsoftly,payingattentiontophonetics,intonation,liaison,etc.
Focusonexplainingsomeeasily-confusedpronunciationsinwords.Forexample,thepronunciationof“g”in“giraffe”is/dʒ/.Letstudentsdistinguishbycomparingsimilarpronunciations.Forliaisoninsentences,suchas“Whydoyou”canbepronouncedas/waɪdəjuː/,demonstrateandpractice.
Letstudentsconductreadingpresentationswithingroups.Theylistentoeachotherandpointoutpronunciationproblemstoimprovetogether.
(V)ListeningPractice(5minutes)
Letstudentslookatthepicturesin1aandguidethemtopredictwhattheymayhear,suchas“Whatanimalswillbementioned?Whatquestionswillbeasked?”
Playtherecording.Studentslistenandcompleterelevanttasks,suchasmatchinganimalswithdescriptivewords.Remindstudentstopayattentiontokeywordssuchasanimalnamesanddescriptivewordsbeforeplaying.
Afterplaying,checktheanswers.Playtherecordingagaintoexplainthepartswheretherearemoremistakestohelpstudentsunderstand.
(VI)OralPractice(5minutes)
GroupActivity:Dividestudentsintogroupsoffour.Supposetheyarevisitingthezooandcommunicatewitheachotherabouttheirfavoriteanimalsandreasons.Eachstudentshouldtalkaboutatleasttwoanimalsandusethelearnedsentencepatternsfordialogue.
Role-play:Eachgroupselectstworepresentatives,oneplaystheroleofatouristandtheotherplaystheroleofazooguide.Thetouristaskstheguideforinformationaboutacertainanimal,andtheguideintroducesit.Forexample,“Whydopeoplelikelions?Becausethey'restrong.”Othergroupmembersobserveandevaluate,andfinallytheteachersummarizesandcomments.

Summary
Reviewthekeyvocabulary,sentencepatternsandpronunciationpointslearnedinthislessonwithstudents.Invitestudentstocometothestagetosummarizetostrengthenmemory.
