English as one of the world most widely spread language and pretty commonly used in foreign communication. Nowadays, learning English can not only enrich ones knowledge but also enhance survival skills. However English teaching in rural areas of Guizhou is still a short slab. During 9.1th.2014 to 12.20th.2014 I spent those 88 days as a student teacher of Zhu Xi School so that I had the chance to observe local peoples life, to talk with local teachers and students directly, and to consider about their life and education more thoroughly than before. Therefore, this thesis is a study into the middle school English education of rural schools in Guizhou. It aims to find problems, causes of poor English as well as the improve strategies. Keywords: English education ; Gui Zhou rural areas ;problems ;strategies 贵州师范学院毕业论文(设计) 2 摘 要 随着改革开放的不断深入,我国对外交流不断扩大,英语作为世界上使 用最广泛的语言之一,也是我们对外交往中最常使用的语言。如今,学习英 语不仅是丰富知识,更是提高生存技能的必要手段。然而在贵州农村地区, 英语教学仍然是一个薄弱环节。在 2014 年 9 月 1 日至 2014 年 12 月 20 日期 间,研究者通过这短短 80 天在贵州省贵阳市金关村筑西学校的实习真实、 深切地观察和了解了当地人民的生活、工作和学习,并对贵州农村英语教育 有了更深刻广泛的认识。所以这篇文章旨在提出当前农村英语教育存在的问 题、找出问题出现的原因、分析并解决问题。 关键词:英语教育;贵州农村;问题;措施 贵州师范学院毕业论文(设计) 3 . Introduction With the development of globalization and increasingly international exchanges, English learning is becoming more and more important in China. At present, its highly recognized that English is a required course on every level from elementary school, even kindergarten, to college. English in Chinese middle schools, of course, is a required course. Compared to other traditional subjects, English teaching is an emerging one in these decades owing to the globalization, the increasing communications between countries and Chinas active participation in world affairs. Kefei Wang states that: “According to the demands of politics, economy, academic research and the reality, great importance should be attached to foreign language education with English as a lingua franca, and foreign language education should be put into a strategic position as to enhance Chinas soft power and meet the demands of socioeconomic development” As a matter of fact, its obvious that in China, urban city students English proficiency is much higher than that of rural school students. For this phenomenon,the researcher are confused about these following questions: (1) whats middle school English education like in rural areas of Guizhou? (2) why it appears like that? (3) how should we assess English education there at the same time what we could do to develop English education there? These questions will be illustrated and be dealt with from the thesis. The purpose of this thesis is to represent the actualities of English education in rural areas schools of Guizhou whose demerits have been neglected and been simply judged for a long time. Whats more the thesis is trying to provide a practical assessment of schools, teachers, and students in rural areas. For readers the thesis shows them practical need for educational development there, to remind them to take appropriate and effective actions for offering kindness help. II English Teaching Problems of Zhu Xi School 1 The Overview of Zhu Xi School Most of students come from local primary school and 90% of them are “left-behind” children. The average number of each class is no more than 50. School conditions certainly affect the quality of education. Classrooms, dormitories, dining room and teachers offices are all crowed in three buildings, which look quite old with uneven floors, dark walls and dropping ceilings. Desks are of different sizes and theres no hot water available. Whats more, in 贵州师范学院毕业论文(设计) 4 dormitory the lights so dim . What surprised my strongly is that all of the six classrooms are all equipped with multimedia however all of these equipment are seriously damaged that barely function well. As to English teaching what they have is only four English teachers, no teaching facilities such as tape recorders, pictures and so on. 2.2 The English Education problems of Zhu Xi School 2.2.1 Lack of confidence 1.rural children more timid afraid to speak English Rural primary school students native from particular surroundings and the influence of family education.tend to appear more timid stiff, is not very talkative .psychological ,no confidence and fear will say the wrong .will laugh was being criticized by the teacher.Basic spoken in a passive position. 2.lack of environment atmosphere of learning English.student in class rarely heard good fluent oral English teachers and normally only contact with two or three times a week only forty minutes each time while other teacher in Chinese teaching.And rural the current society, especially the use of English communication environment rarely is not even.Therefore student opportunities to hear English, read English, practice English rarely is lack of a language environment to learn English. 3.rural primary school teaching methods and means lag behind.Still exist in the rural primary school use of traditional English teaching methods mainly “daunted, English-chinese translation“ teaching method is not only the classroom atmosphere dull student is in passive accept state and doesnt conform to the elementary students physiological and psychological characteristics and age characteristics of cannot meet their interest in learning students have tired of the psychological perfunctory is not willing to continue to learn English. 2.2.2 Poor Condition of English education Though Zhu Xi School is equipped with multimedia devices in each classroom like those in the city part of China, 4, the negative impact of family education and the environment. Many parents think learning English is a junior high school elementary school just to learn Chinese, maths and other basic subjects are enough although some parents realize the importance of from primary school began to learn English ,but no higher cultural level. itself is also a little knowledge of English Dont know anything about it ,even cant in creating a good learning environment for children in the home.But difficulties.we should not choose to escape and blame 贵州师范学院毕业论文(设计) 5 .but to actively overcome it brave to overcome it.Let the children also need equal education to realize English feel English to learn English well. 2.2.3 Bad Performance of Students Students of Zhu Xi School are mainly graduates from local primary school.teaching information block.Schools in remote mountainous areas, rarely have the opportunity to communicate with the outside world, and teachers rarely participate in professional training, teaching ideas and teaching methods can not get timely update, the classroom is relatively drab, students learning interest is not high. .III Reasons of English Teaching Problems of Rural Areas 3.1 Inadvanced of the Education Concept in Rural Areas leadership seriously enough. Many school leaders dont understand English teaching, there is no good to the guidance and supervision of English teaching of the teacher, cant understand English teaching situation in time and the guide of the teachers English teaching level, English in many schools become dispensable “less important“ English teaching seems to be accomplish a task, rules rather than as an indispensable part of quality education Family backgrounds have a great impact on students learing Jin guan village is obviously not a wealthy area, people who lived there normally received lower education so did students parents. They held the opinions that whoever learned math and science well will dare to go everywhere around the world, or their children are going to work in Guang Zhou when they graduate from middle school like them, so it is unnecessary for students to learn well, let alone English. During my internship in Zhu Xi School, a student in my class was so naughty that he cant concentrate on English study and he broke shool rules and class rules with a ferocious attitude. As a result, I had to talk to his mother through phones who work outside the provice and what his mother said was really disappointed me. “He (refers to the student) will only be the case. Its our parents duty to send him to school. Nevertheless whether he will be a good student depends on himself and you teacher. Theres nothing I can do. Anyway, I just want him know a few Chinese characters and its enough. English is useless, at least for him, because I am going to send him to work with us after he gradudates from middle school. Whats more, he once said he wasnt fond of English at all. Now, he could not understand Engish, you teacher should bare with it.” In fact there are many parents in rurals who held the same idea. The requirements of parents to their children keep falling. 贵州师范学院毕业论文(设计) 6 Owing to geographical restrictions, the concept of English education in rural areas is also inadvanced. In terms of arranged courses, English as a main subject is supposed to be as important as Chinese, Mathematics. However the fact is that in Zhu Xi School except English arranged classes theres no extra interesting English programms at all after class. Whats more, there are the pretty low requirements for English teachers and students. The students have only 12 assignments per month to do and the teachers at most have 12 assigments to check per month. No one can deny that the actual role of English is not enough for school. So, it is not hard to explain that no exercise books for students to do regular daily English practice. Teachers are considered as the most crucial one among that influence students foreign language learning(Wilkins,1987). English teacher in rural areas has always adopted the traditional teaching methods, grammar-translation method, which could briefly introduced as “reviewpresent new lessonenhance new lesson-homework”. They use the same teaching method year after year. They are inactive in teaching. A majority of them regard teaching as a job to make a living, not as a career for self fulfillment.Teachers dont have the passion for teaching and willingness of self-improvement because they dont have the risk of being regined thanks to the fact of lacking teachers in the whole rural areas. Therefore, teachers in the view that they do not need to or want to try other teaching methods. All of the unchanged, boring, simply repeated English teaching is hard to arouse students passion to learn English and learn the correct knowledge. Many English teachers of rural schools are local people, and the students are mostly local residents, so it seems natural that no matter teachers or students in English classes both speak their dialect instead of standard Chinese pronunciation, let alone English, which lead to the poor oral English and listening of rural school students. 3. 2 Inadequate Investment in Rural Education When it comes to the investment in rural areas education, county-level co-ordination of rural government plays an important role. At present, even though schools in rural areas are more or less equipped with multimedia devices, they are seriously damaged. Even though the average number of students of each class is less than urban schools, the classrooms are old with uneven floors, dark walls and dropping ceilings. Even though our country has invested more and more funds to rural schools, there lights are dim and some places have no lights in dormitory. Even though the environment has improved a lot, theres no boiled water available for students no 贵州师范学院毕业论文(设计) 7 matter it is summer or winter. Theres no doubt the short of investment to rural schools. Currently, most of rural schools rely on local government support to manage. Rural schools faced the problems that lack of government support, which leads to the lack of well organized management, the lack of the quality and quantity of teachers. But, education is an opening system, which needs everyone in the world to involve in. Education should be mainly based on government investment, at the same time, encouraging society members such as enterprise, individual, etc, to actively participate rural school education. Zhu Xi School is a special but not the only embarrassed case on school funds. On one hand, the school is indeed in need of financial support; on other hand, it could barely run by itself. It isnt at the bottom of short of investment to arouse everybodys attention. Whats more, there are a lot of learning facilities and information to help urban children learn English, for instance, mp3, mp4 player, extra English interesting class, tutor and so on. But many of those for rural kids are hard to imagine, the basic required study materials, an exercise book which parents and school both havent bought one for students. 3.3 Mistaken views on English of Students Most of students in rural areas schools think it is normal to learn English badly because they are not native speakers and theyve never been abroad. Most of the students think it is of no use to learn English, and do not expect much on English learning. Compared with urban city schools students, a large number of rural areas school students are left-behind children. By using questionnaires, Jihai Yao and Yaqing Mao (2008) investigated “8,627 rural pupils chosen from 10 provinces in the western part of China to examine students academic psychological characteristics, containing academic self-concept, teacher-student relationship and the student attitudes toward school.” Their result shows “firstly, children living with parents have the best academic performance; secondly, children left behind with both parents working out show better than those living with one of the parents on academic psychological performance; thirdly, children left behind with only one of the parents working out performance the worst, especially when only with the father. ” Rural left-behind children account for a significant proportion of Guizhou. In Kuan Chang Middle School, 90% of the students are left-behind children and most of them living with their grandparents. When they come across difficulties in doing homework, they have no one to ask and they couldnt afford a tutor as many urban children do. Whats more, 贵州师范学院毕业论文(设计) 8 many students due to their poor primary English foundation, which result in them afraid of learning English, feeling sick of English in middle school, then instead of work hard to catch up with their classmates, they just give up learning English. Not only are they lack of a good solid foundation of English but also Chinese. Their bad Chinese lead to that they can not write their names in pinyin correctly, their poor hand writing habit contribute to their terrible hand writing in English. Accent of students have a largely negative effect on their spoken English. Some useful experiences and methods in the teaching of English. 1.Develop confidence nourish the source of motivation Todays rural primary school .English teaching is facing a group of pupils seldom contact with English on how to make them like English, learn English well, primary problem is to cultivate students confidence in learning English .Practice shows English learning difficulties .students dont there is a negative mentality internal underpowered learning their learning initiative is poor. The negative learning psychology of students .I try to guide in the teaching by applying the method of successful incentive done a lot of work in promoting the students self-confidence received a significant effect. I according to each students learning situation in teaching requires students to formulate suitable target and goals to motivate yourself to success. It has been proven the confidence of students learning English to set up or not is a key to the success or failure of the primary school English teaching. 2.To set up the equal relationship between teachers and students create harmonious classroom teaching atmosphere.
