As our courses are open to members of the public from the Sheffield region and to students registered on our own named award programmes and to full-time students of the University, you will find that the classes contain student with a wide variety of academic level and experience. This makes for a very exciting and stimulating learning experience and our students tell us that they have made friendships across all ages through learning together in small groups. Part-time study is challenging and at times can be difficult, so conversations with fellow students during the breaks are opportunities to discuss with each other how you are getting on and whether you are enjoying the courses. Because we recognise the importance of leaving time and space for students to talk informally with each other as part of their learning experience, at the beginning of each course the tutor and students normally make a group decision as to whether there will be a refreshment break built into the teaching session. Students progress through successfully completing modules for which they collect credit. To receive the award of the Certificate in Higher Education a student must obtain 120 credits. Undergraduate Named Award students must normally obtain the following credits to receive their award: 120 credits at Level 0 for the satisfactory completion of the Foundation level 120 credits at Level 1 for a Certificate 120 credits at Level 1 + 120 credits at Level 2 for a Diploma 120 credits at Level 1 + 120 credits at Level 2 + 120 credits at level 3 for a Degree 120 credits are normally accumulated over a 2 year part-time study period at each level (equivalent to 1 year full time study), although some students choose to take 3 years. Progression to the next level is dependent upon successful completion of the previous one. Location of and Access to the Institutes Offices and Teaching Rooms Student access to the teaching rooms is via the Portobello Centre entrance, Pitt Street, off Mappin Street. As you enter the building on the ground floor you will find a Porters Lodge, a student/staff common room, teaching rooms and some academic offices. On the first floor there is an open-access IT Room, other academic offices and administrative offices, but unfortunately there is no lift to the first floor, so access to these areas is difficult for wheelchair users or people with other mobility difficulties. However, staff will arrange to meet students on the ground floor on request and there is another open- access IT room in the Management School and in St Georges library, both of which are on Mappin Street. Many of our classes are taught in the Management School, St. Georges, the Arts Tower (Languages) and the Hicks Building. Please take care to check in which building your class is scheduled to take place and allow time to locate and reach the classroom. The dedicated library stock for TILL courses is located in St Georges library, but you will need to use other university libraries as well, for example, the main Arts Tower library. 6 ESSENTIAL INFORMATION Key Dates 2005/2006 AUTUMN SEMESTER 1 STARTSMON 26 SEPT 2005 STUDENT FORUM (5.30 - 6.30 p.m.)Tues 11 Oct 2005 Last date for change to Autumn Semester modules (Add/Drop forms to TILL)Fri 14 Oct 2005 Last date to report, to Registry Services, any special examination requirements due to disability, dyslexia or religious days of observance within all the exam periods in 05-06. The majority of the modules are worth either 20 credits or 10 credits. You need to take 120 credits in order to qualify for an award. CATS means that credit can be awarded for study which has not necessarily resulted in a qualification and it enables the transfer of study from one institution to another, when necessary, subject to the approval of the receiving institution. Personal Development Planning Personal Development Planning (PDP) is a way of directing, recording, and reflecting on your achievements and learning during your time at TILL. It consists of: 1.A series of exercises, guided by your personal tutor, that encourages reflection on your learning, makes you aware of your progress at the Institute, and helps you consider how to apply your academic skills to your current and future career. 2.Cohort tutorials, where before starting Levels One, Two, and Three, you come together as a year group to prepare for the higher years of study and share experiences. 3.Group tutorials, organised by your personal tutor, to discuss in smaller groups your completed PDP exercises and thoughts about personal development. 4.A transcript of your academic results, which forms a permanent, individual record of your academic achievement. The intention of PDP is to help you make links between different elements of your learning at TILL; to become a more independent learner; to provide a permanent record of your academic achievements; and to provide a structured resource charting your progress through your degree course. In the coming academic year, it will be introduced for all students starting named award programmes, while in the academic year 2006-7 it will be more generally applied. The tutor in charge of PDP is Tim Herrick, and any queries about it should be addressed to him. 11 YOU, YOUR COURSE AND THE INSTITUTE Registration You will need to register on an annual basis and all aspects of enrolment and registration are dealt with by: Registration and Examinations Office, Level 6, University House, Western Bank, Sheffield, S10 2TN Registration Help line: 22 21288 Module Choices and Add/Drop Forms Timescales Named Award students will be sent a Module Choice form during May each year for the following session. You should inform your Course Secretary if you have any changes at all which need to be made to your record. Have you moved or are you moving? Change of address information is important, as is a day time contact telephone number. Cancellation of Classes If a class is cancelled at short notice because the tutor is ill or due to some other unforeseen circumstances, the Institute will try to contact you by telephone - it is vital, therefore, that we have your current telephone number where you can be contacted during office hours. Sometimes it is necessary to cancel classes due to bad weather during the winter. If this is so, we will contact you as early as possible by telephone, or if appropriate by putting announcements out on local radio. If you are concerned about whether to come in for your scheduled class, please listen out for these announcements and/or contact the Institute for information. When a class is cancelled, the lost meeting(s) are usually added to the end of the module, and your tutor will advise you where this is the case. Student Representatives and Student Forums The Institute is always looking at ways to improve the level of student representation and feedback. We will be asking each level of each programme to nominate at least one student representative. All student representatives will be invited to a student forum on Tuesday 11th October from 5.30 to 6.30 pm. at which nominations and appointments to the Institute Teaching Committee and Faculty of Social Sciences Student Committee will be sought. The places allocated on both these committees are a way of ensuring that your voice is heard in discussions on aspects of the programme. The forum encourages student representatives to meet each other and discuss aspects of student feedback that could be useful for future developments. There is a Student Representative notice board and postal pigeon holes in the Student Common Room. All students are welcome to attend the Student Forums and they will be held on: Tuesday 11th October 2005 (5.30 - 6.30 p.m.) Thursday 1st December 2005 (6.30 7.30 p.m.) Monday 27th February 2006 (5.30 - 6.30 p.m.) Wednesday 26th April 2006 (5.30 - 6.30 p.m.) Do you want to be a Student Representative? Could this be you? Every level of every subject track needs a Rep. Your award needs you! If you are interested in becoming a Student Representative please contact Angela Johnson on 22 27022 Module and Programme Evaluation Towards the end of each module you will be given the opportunity to complete a Module Evaluation form which will provide us with feedback on your classes. In addition, at the end of each certificate, diploma or degree, we will also ask you to complete an evaluation form to assess the programme overall. Please make every effort to co-operate fully with any such exercise, because unless we know how you feel, we can do nothing to improve our services. If you are not given the opportunity to complete an evaluation form during your studies please contact Maria Baldam on 222 7023. 13 Complaints Procedure If you have a complaint please discuss this with your module tutor in the first instance. If this is not appropriate, please contact your Programme Director. In the final instance complaints should be put in writing to Dr. Sue Webb, Director of the Institute for Lifelong Learning, The University of Sheffield, 196- 198 West Street, Sheffield, S1 4ET Mobile Phones All mobile phones must be switched off before entering a teaching room. In the case of emergency calls the following procedures should be followed: firstly, inform the tutor before the class begins that you might be receiving an emergency call; secondly, if your phone is able to notify you of incoming calls without the aid of a ring tone (via text, vibrations, whatever) then turn the ring tone off; thirdly if you do receive an emergency incoming call then kindly leave the class before answering it. Study Skills You should find that the methods of teaching on many of the Institutes qualification modules are sympathetic to the learning styles of mature students who may not come from a traditional academic background of A levels. However, sometimes we all need help. The Institute offers a 10-credit module called Learning to Learn and it is highly recommended for students returning to study. The focus of the module is on the practice of such skills as essay-writing, correct referencing, interpreting texts, locating information and ways to approach heavy reading loads. Also included are sessions on how to adopt a critical approach over a variety of disciplines. The module credits gained can form part of your level 1 award. The module is offered at the following time and students should include it on their module choice forms: 7.30 p.m. Thursday 29 September to 15 December 2005 (ACE1687.A.05.1) The Learning to Learn module is also offered on-line and is presented on-line from Monday 26th September to 16th December 2005 (ACE1757.A.02.1). Once you have registered you will be contacted to select a date to attend one introductory module. There are two dates to choose from: Monday 26th September or Thursday 29th September. 14 ASSESSMENT, ASSIGNMENTS (b) to complete all written assignments, practical or other coursework; and (c) to attend all examinations, as appropriate in each case to the relevant programme of study. A candidate who fails to comply with this Regulation may be denied the credits assigned to the relevant modules, half-modules or other parts of the programme of study. If you are absent from classes for two weeks or more you must inform your tutor, Programme Director or Course Secretary. 16 If You Are Absent If you are absent as a result of illness, or if you believe that a period of illness has affected your studies you must notify the University submitting the appropriate medical certificate. Two alternative forms are available, relating to: a) illness lasting up to 7 days; or b) illness lasting more than 7 days or any illness affecting examinations/assessment. The two forms are available from the Student Services Information Desk or can be downloaded from their website (SSiD). If there are other circumstances, which you feel are likely to affect your attendance or ability to study, for example family or work commitments, please get in touch with your Personal Tutor, Programme Director or Course Secretary. We will be able to provide advice and support. If you decide to withdraw from your course or take a leave of absence please contact your Personal Tutor, Programme Director or Course Secretary. A Change of Status Form is available from the Institute, your Course Secretary, the Student Services Information Desk (SSID) or the SSiD web site. Examinations and Examination Boards Reminder - Exams are held during the semester assessment period in January/February and May/June so please do NOT book a holiday during these periods. Please refer to the Key Dates within the Essential Information section for more information. The Mature Access (Foundation) Programme dates may vary so please consult your course tutors. Formal Examinations: Some modules are assessed partially by formal examination. The Universitys policy with regard to examinations is that they should be anonymously marked. Please make sure, therefore, that you take your Ucard with you to any examination so that you can enter your student number onto the examination booklet. You will be provided with a copy of The Faculty of Social Sciences Examination Conventions for The Institute for Lifelong Learning prior to your examination. These will normally be distributed with the letter notifying you of the time, date and venue of your examination. Moderation and second marking All work for modules at level one is moderated. This means that an independent tutor is given a sample of scripts, together with a note of the marks awarded. This tutor then looks at the work and if there is any disagreement in the level of marks a discussion is held and if necessary a third tutor is consulted. The External Examiner also has the power to change marks if they are not considered to be consistent with what might be expected at this level. At levels 2 and 3 a second tutor is given a selection of scripts from each module but without a note of the marks awarded
