重庆市2017高考英语阅读理解选编(19)(附解析)阅读下列短文, 从给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D) 中, 选出最佳选项。(2013西安市标准化考练,D)Up to 45 rare species of Australian animals are in danger of becoming extinct within 20 years, scientists warned in a report. But hope is not lost! According to the report, the species can be saved if immediate action is taken to control their natural predators (天敌) and other threats. The threatened animals can be found in the faraway Kimberley region of northwestern Australia. The region is similar in square miles to California. Thirty percent of the endangered species are unique to the region, while others have already disappeared in other parts of Australia.Dr. Tara Martin, a research scientist said in the report, “A large extinction event is happening in Australia. The north has really been the last stronghold (主要栖息地) for many species of birds and mammals and reptiles. The Kimberley is really their last chance on earth.”Many of the species are under threat because they are hunted by wild cats. These cats kill around 500 000 native animals in the Kimberley region every day. The species face another threat, too. Their native habitat is also being destroyed by wildfires and by wild donkeys and goats that compete for food and water. Humans introduced cats, donkeys and goats to Australia to be farm animals or pets. However, their populations have exploded in the region because they have few natural predators. The report calls for $ 95 million to immediately start protection programs. The report also suggests reducing wild donkey and goat populations in the region, building fences, fighting wildfires and educating the community about how to help the endangered species. Richard Hobbs, an ecologist at the University of Western Australia, says the costs are worthwhile because the measures will not be too difficult to carry out.文章大意:本文是一篇调查报告。在澳大利亚有多达45种稀有动物在接下来的二十年里将会灭绝。报告主要讲述了这些物种所面临的危险并提出了保护它们应该采取的一些措施。1Which of the following should be done to protect the rare species of Australian animals?AProviding new habitat for whether it would be okay if instead of throwing out the food we would donate it.And they were on board,” he said.So 18 months ago,the students began what they call the Food Recovery Network. Each night, volunteers would show up at a campus dining hall to pick up leftovers and deliver them to area shelters and food banks. So far, they have donated more than 23 000 kilos of food that would otherwise have been thrown out.Nationwide,$165 billion worth of food is wasted each year, according to the National Resources Defense Council.Spokesman Bob Keefe says that is about 40% of the countrys entire food production.“If we can reduce our waste in this country by 15%,we can feed 25 million hungry Americans. That is a huge benefit. That is what programs like this Food Recovery Network are on a raised concrete form. The only source of heat came from somewhere beneath the plastic mattress and the rough blanket the blankfaced police woman had handed him after taking his thumb prints. He heard voices and metallic clang as the cell door swung open.At the front desk a tired looking policeman handed the old man back his belongings, his wornout cap and the Seiko watch that had stopped working the day his beloved Evelyn left. The policeman dramatically held the blue plastic bag at an arms length to the old man who took it and made sure its contents were undamaged:the goat meat, palm oil, leaves and spices. He ignored the confused expression on the officers face and signed the document declaring he had been returned the possessions they had taken off him the night before. No one spoke to him as he walked slowly towards the exit.“Mr.Easynwa?”he stopped and prayed to God who now took care of Evelyn to please take him far away from this unhappy place of expressionless faces, clipped accents and people who did not even attempt to pronounce his name right.“Ezenwa,”he said and looked at a woman with tangerine lips, her name tag said Jessica Harlow,Social Services.“A bit far from home,”she said as she drove fast and with confidence the way Evelyn used to.He wondered if she meant the 50 miles from Liverpool or the 50,000 miles from Enugu,a city in Nigeria. He did not bother replying as this woman had plenty to say about the weather, bad drivers, her daughters school play.At last she drew up outside the block of flats where he lived.“Got here in the end,”said she seriously,“Really Mr.Easynwa,if you keep getting lost,we will have to consider moving you into a home.”“No need.I was not lost,” he answered. He carefully rolled up the sleeves of the oversize bomber jacket he wore and turned on the tap to wash his hands, relieved the pipes were not frozen. In a clean pan he placed the chopped pieces of goat meat. The herbs and spices that had taken him three months to track down, the uziza seeds had taken him into the heart of Granby Market in Liverpool, his uchanwu leaves down a shady back alley in Manchester, and yesterday, among other food items, the finest goat meat from a Sierra Leonean Butcher in Birmingham. That had taken some time,so much that he missed the last train and when the police found him shivering outside the locked up station,he was so cold that he couldnt answer loudly enough the pinkfaced big copper who yelled in his face,“Whats your name sir?”spraying his face with spittle(唾沫) as he did so,leaving them with no choice but to search an problems for almost everyone who comes in contact with them. Their valuesthis cant be repeated too oftenare not necessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying food covered by small worms, and an old person lying alone in bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interfering(干涉) with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car, it needs more mechanical maintenance(机械维修,保养) as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. But never forget that such operations are painful experiences, however good the results will be. And at what point should you stop to treat the old body? Is it morally right to try to push off death by seeking the development of drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to activate the old body, knowing that it is designed to die? You cant ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel bound to give them a try, on the principle that while theres life, theres hope. When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.1. What does the passage mainly tell us?A. The values are different between the old and the young.B. The moral problems raised by old people.C. The personal fre
