14、national things or going overseas. IC is actually an academic and applied discipli ne that has developed intern ati on ally si nce the 1950s. Sometimes called cross-cultural com muni cati ons or comparative culture , scholars most often use the prefix inter with the word精心整理精心整理cultural to describe

15、the interaction between cultures. On one level, IC is represented by culture studies, where we exam ine the political, econo mic and lifestyle systems of other countries. On another level, it is applied linguistics, where we seek to understand the relati on ship betwee n Ian guage and culture. Many

16、Chin ese En glish teachers and professors have bee n in terested in this aspect since the 1980s - How to teach En glish in ways that help stude nts also lear n the basic com muni cati on practices of Britai n, the US or other En glish speak ing coun tries.?But the discipline of Intercultural Communi

17、cations is actually a broad and well-developed field of study. IC is an interdisciplinary application of fields like cultural an thropology, sociology, psychology (and social psychology), com muni cati on studies, applied linguistics and educational pedagogy. IC is a comprehensive attempt to un ders

18、ta nd all aspects of huma n cultures and how they in teract with each other.?To un dersta nd In tercultural Communi cati ons, we seek to un dersta nd traditi on and moder ni zati on, con siste ncy and cha nge. As we un dersta nd some of the ongoing n atio nal characteristics of a people, we can exam

19、ine how this culture is seen from the outside, how it in teracts with other cultures and how it is cha nging. In the last thirty odd years, scholars have developed both theoretical framework for compari ng cultures and some practical dime nsions for con sideri ng the similarity and differe nces betw

20、ee n them. One level of intercultural comparison is Cultural Identity. Another level of comparison is Verbal Com mun icatio n. Ano ther area receivi ng much atte ntio n is Nonv erbal Com mun icatio n.?Paper 4 Readi ng Passage 1 Questio ns 15-20In recent years criticisms have been voiced concerning s

21、exist bias in the English Ianguage. It has been argued that some of the vocabulary and grammar we use reflects and reinforces a traditional view of the world as one in which men are dominant and wome n play a sec on dary role. Take the word chairma n for example. While this can in fact apply to peop

22、le of both sexes, it appears to some people to be male-oriented as it ends in ma n. In the past people tak ing the role of chairma n were exclusively male and the word was obviously origi nally a compo und of chair and ma n. Many En glish speakers, however, have ceased to view this word as a compoun

23、d and no more feel it to be composed of these two un its, tha n they perceive cupboard to be a composite of cup and board. I n additi on the con ti nued use of chairma n might be defe nded on the grounds that the final syllable is pronounced /mn/ rather than /mn/, just like the final syllable of wom

24、a n. Despite such con siderati ons other speakers take a con trary view and are sensitive to the components of which it is made up. They clearly perceive it as a title that perpetuates traditi onal ideas about the place of wome n in society. For this reas on they seek to replace it with neutral term

25、s such as chairperson or chair, so that it is now possible to ask questio ns such as; Who is chair of the committee?Other cha nges advocated in clude the replaceme nt of words such as postma n, firema n and policema n with more clearly n eutral terms such as postal worker,fire-fighter and police off

26、icer . There is, however, continuing controversy about h(such Ian guage cha nges should go. Should cha nges be con sidered for traditi onal idioms as man in the street and titles such as Peking Man? What about those words where the male meaning of ma n is no Ion ger dominant, such as ma nhan dle?To

27、the extent that changes have taken place, they have done so more in the writte n Ian guage and formal pronoun ceme nts tha n in everyday speech. You would be quite likely to read in the paper that Postal workers are to receive a pay in crease. But Has the postma n bee n? would be most likely to be h

28、eard in in formal conv ersatio n. Here postman remaifirmly entrenched in popular usage.The exte nt to which Ian guage reflects and shapes attitudes and behaviors is a matter of conjecture. Chin ese, Japa nese, Persia n and Turkish do not make the kinds of sex distinctions English makes through its s

32、1-27Can Computers Do a Better Job Rat ing Stocks?Since May, Charles Schwab has been providing stock ratings to clients using a computerized system that it says tries to remove huma n bias.In particular, Schwab says, its system is meant to avoid the conflicts of interest that have plagued traditi ona
