will

what

we

say

here,but

it

can

never

what

theydid

here.

It

is

for

us

the

living,rather,

to

be

dedicated

here

to

theunfinished

work

which

they

whofought

here

have

thus

far

It

is

rather

for

usto

be

here

dedicated

to

the

before

us—thatfrom

these

honored

we

takeincreased

devotion

to

they

gave

the

fullmeasure

of

devotion—

that

we

here

highly

resolve

that

thesedead

shall

not

have

died

in

vain—that

this

nation,

under

God,

shallhave

a

birth

of

freedom—andthat

government

of

the

people,

bythe

people,

for

the

people,

shallnot

perish

from

the

earth.The

scholar

is

that

man

who

must

take

up

into

himself

all

the

ability

of

the

time,

all

tcontributions

of

the

past,

all

the

hopes

of

the

future.

He

must

be

an

university

ofknowledges.

If

there

be

one

lesson

more

than

another,

which

should

pierce

his

ear,

itis,

The

world

is

nothing,

the

man

is

all;

in

yourself

is

the

law

of

all

nature,

and

youknow

not

yet

how

a

globule

of

sap

ascends;

in

yourself

slumbers

the

whole

of

Reason;

it

is

for

you

to

know

all,

it

is

for

you

to

dare

all.

Mr.

President

and

Gentlemen,

thisconfidence

in

the

unsearched

might

of

man

belongs,

by

all

motives,

by

all

prophecy,

by

all

preparation,

to

the

American

Scholar.

We

have

listened

too

long

to

the

courtlymuses

of

Europe.

The

spirit

of

the

American

freeman

is

already

suspected

to

be

timid,imitative,

tame.

Public

and

private

avarice

make

the

air

we

breathe

thick

and

fat.

Thescholar

is

decent,

indolent,

complaisant.

See

already

the

tragic

consequence.

Themind

of

this

country,

taught

to

aim

at

low

objects,

eats

upon

itself.

There

is

no

workfor

any

but

the

decorous

and

the

complaisant.Hostilities

exist.

There

is

no

blinking

at

the

fact

that

that

our

people,

our

territoour

interests

are

in

grave

danger.With

confidence

in

our

armed

forces

-

with

the

unbounding

determination

of

ourpeople

-

we

will

gain

the

inevitable

triumph

-

so

help

us

God.I

ask

that

the

Congress

declare

that

since

the

unprovoked

and

dastardly

attack

byJapan

on

Sunday,

Dec.

7,

a

state

of

war

has

existed

between

the

United

States

andthe

Japanese

empire.We‘ll

continue

our

quest

in

space.

There

will

bemore

shuttle

flights

and

more

shuttle

crews

and,

yes,more

volunteers,

more

civilians,

more

teachers

inspace.

Nothing

ends

here;

our

hopes

and

ourjourneys

continue.I

want

to

add

that

I

wish

I

could

talk

to

every

manand

woman

who

works

for

NASA,

or

who

worked

onthis

mission

and

tell

them:

"Your

dedication

andprofessionalism

have

moved

and

impressed

us

fordecades.

And

we

know

of

your

anguish.

We

shareit."There‘s

a

coincidence

today.

On

this

day

390years

ago,

the

great

explorer

Sir

Francis

Drake

diedaboard

ship

off

the

coast

of

Panama.

In

his

lifetimethe

great

frontiers

were

the

oceans,

and

a

historianlater

said,

"He

lived

by

the

sea,

died

on

it,

and

wasburied

in

it."

Well,

today,

we

can

say

of

theChallenger

crew:

Their

dedication

was,

likeDrake‘s,

complete.The

crew

of

the

space

shuttle

Challenger

honoredus

by

the

manner

in

which

they

lived

their

lives.

Wewill

never

forget

them,

nor

the

last

time

we

sawthem,

this

morning,

as

they

prepared

for

theirjourney

and

waved

goodbye

and

"slipped

the

surlybonds

of

earth"

to

"touch

the

face

of

God."Again,

you

can"t

connect

the

dots

lookingforward;

you

can

only

connect

themlooking

backwards.

So

you
