你你你ChapterOneIntroductionWiththerapiddevelopmentofChina'seconomy,businessEnglishhasbecomemoreandmorewidelyused.Tradedoesnotexistonlyathome.Tradebetweencountrieshasbecomeanewsituationofeconomicdevelopment.Asalanguageform,businessEnglishhasitsowncharacteristicsandrules.BusinessEnglishisanimportantlanguagesubject,andEnglishiswidelyusedinthebusinessfield.BusinessEnglishismainlyusedininternationaltradeandmarketingandotherbusinessactivities,involvingallaspectsofbusinessmanagement,suchaspurchasing,pricing,sales,financialmanagementandsoon.Ininternationaltrade,duetotheincreasingeconomicexchangesbetweencountriesandthepreferentialpoliciesofvariousgovernmentsinforeigntrade,moreandmoreEnglishisusedforbusinesscommunication.BecausealotofbusinessactivitiesneedtouseEnglish,whichputsforwardhigherrequirementsforlearners.Tobettermeetthedemandsofinternationaltrade,manypeoplearemakingeveryefforttolearnbusinessEnglish.BusinessEnglishplaysanimportantroleininternationaltradebecauseitisspecialandindispensable.EnglishtoChinesetranslationisanindispensablewaytodothis.ThispapermainlyanalysesthelinguisticfeaturesofusingbusinessEnglishathomeandabroadanddiscussesEnglish-Chinesetranslationskills,expectingstudentstohaveahighlevelofbusinessEnglishtosupportChineseenterprisesintheirexchangesandcollaborationsabroad.AmericantranslationtheoristNidaonceputforward:“Translationistheexchangeoftwocultures,butalsotheprocessofculturalexchange.”Therefore,translationisnotonlytheexchangeoflanguages,butalsotheexchangeofcultures.Accuratetranslationwillreducealotofunnecessaryproblems,canensuresmoothbusinesstradeandcommunication,translatorscanimprovetheirlevelandaccumulateexperienceintheprocessofcooperation.Attachingimportancetotranslationplaysapositiveroleinabsorbingforeignessence,promotingbilateralcooperationandpromotingthespreadoftheVoiceofChina.ChapterTwoBusinessEnglishLanguageCharacteristicsAsacommunicationlanguage,businessEnglishisakindofprofessionalEnglish,whichbelongstoavariantorabranchofEnglishforspecialpurposes.Infact,itisnotfundamentallydifferentfromordinaryEnglish,butdifferentfromordinaryEnglish,ithasbusinesscharacteristics,soitismainlyusedincommercialtradeactivities.Itcoversawiderangeoffields,includingbusinessadministration,finance,insurance,accounting,trade,transportationandcommunications.However,businessEnglishalsohasitsowncharacteristics.Itismainlyusedbyseniorstaffinforeigncompaniesandstaffresponsibleforexternalbusinessinmultinationalcompanies.WiththerapiddevelopmentofChineseforeigntrade,China'sentryintoWTOhasbecomeanimportantpartofthetrendandtideoftheworldeconomicglobalization.TherequirementofChineseenterprisestoapplyEnglishabilityisalsoincreasingconstantly.However,atpresent,thoseengagedinexportbusinessandinternationaltradeactivitiesarefacedwithproblemssuchasunevenEnglishproficiencyandinabilitytounderstandeachother'sconversations.Therefore,athoroughunderstandingofthecharacteristicsofbusinessEnglishisofgreatsignificanceforcommunicationandcooperation.2.1LexicalFeaturesofBusinessEnglishBusinessEnglishhasalargeamountofvocabulary,withastrongfocusonspecificcontentsandalsospecificreadergroups.Vocabularyisthebasisofanarticle,inordertotranslateanarticleoracontractwell,thetranslatormustfirstunderstandthecharacteristicsofthevocabulary,startingfromonewordandcompletingthetranslationstepbystep.2.1.1FlexibilityIntheprocessoftranslation,ifthetranslatordoesnothaveacomprehensiveunderstandingofthelanguageandculture,itiseasytomakepeoplefeeluncomfortable.Therefore,translatorsneedtofollowtheprincipleofflexibilityratherthanrigidtranslation.TheyshouldflexiblydealwiththedifferencesbetweenEnglishandChinese,soastocontinuouslyimprovethequalityoftranslation.WhentranslatingbusinessEnglish,translatorsshouldtakefullaccountofthedifferencesbetweendifferentlanguagesandcultures.Onthebasisoffullyunderstandingtheoriginaltext,translatorsshouldcomprehensivelyconsiderthecontext,audience,culture,languagecharacteristicsandotherfactors,flexiblyusetranslationstrategies,translationmethodsandtranslationskillsaccordingtodifferentsituations,soastoflexiblyprocessinformation,speeduptranslationandcompletetranslationtasks.Forexample,theword“dragon”inChineseisthesymbolofimperialpoweranddignity,whileinEnglish,thedragonistheembodimentofthedevil,thesymbolofterror,andoftendrawthesamesignwiththeevil.Theabovesituationisduetoculturaldifferences.Therefore,intheprocessofbusinessEnglishtranslation,translatorsshouldhavearesourcefulmind,extensiveknowledgeofChineseandforeigncultures,andtranslateflexiblyaccordingtodifferentculturalbackgrounds.Contradictionsanddisputescausedbyimpropertranslationshouldbeavoided.Forpolysemouswords,translatorsshouldalsofollowtheprincipleofflexibility,taking“share”asanexample:“Allthepartnershaveashareintheprofits.”Inthissentence,shareisusedasanoun.“Thecompanywasformedwith2000shares.”“share”isalsousedasanoun,buttranslatedas“share”.AdjectivesalsooccurfrequentlyinbusinessEnglishconversationandareveryflexibleintheiruse.Thisiswherethemeaningofwhichwordisusediscrucialtotheinterpretationof ivevoicebecomesambiguousandthewordsappeareuphemisticandpolite,avoidinglosingtheopportunitytocooperateduetotoohardwords.Nomatterwhatkindofletterhasthiskindofpolitenessandeuphemismmakesthereceivereasiertoacceptandrespect,thusreflectingtheimportanceoftheuseofpassivegrammar.Andinthecontractwhenthepassivegrammarisuseditstoneismostlyfairandobjective,thecontractpaysspecialattentiontotheexpressionofthetone,intheabsenceofambiguityanderror.Sothatthereadercanknowthecontentandsystemataglance,theuseofpassivegrammariseasytoavoidsomesubjectiveharshnessalsoachievesobjectivityandfairness.Forexample:InspectionforqualityandweighshallbecarriedoutbeforeloadingbytheChinaCommodityInspectionBureauandthecertificatesissuedbythemshallbetakenasfinal.Thesubjectofthefirstclauseis“Inspectionforqualityandweight”,anditspredicateisthepassivevoice“shallbecarriedout”.Thereasonwhythepassivevoiceexpressionisusedhereistoemphasizeandhighlightthecontentofthesubject:Inspectionforqualityandweight,sotheChinaCommodityInspectionBureau,theagencythatcarryouttheinspectionaction,isplacedafterthepreposition“by”.ButintheChinesetranslationhere,thetopicof“massandweight”isusedasthesubject,andthepredicatepartisusedas“tobeinspectedbytheChinaBureauofCommodityInspection”.Forthesecondclause“thecertificatesissuedbythem”istranslatedasthesubjectintheChinesetranslation,“shallbetakenasfinal”istranslatedas“willbethelastproof”.Thewholesentenceconveysthemeaningoftheoriginaltextsmoothlyandaccurately.Abusinesscontractisalegaldocument,soitslanguagestyleisgenerallyrigorous,accurate,objectiveandfair.Becauseitsinformationcannothaveanyambiguityandothermeanings,theuseofthepassivevoicecanavoidthesubjectivityofthepersontoachievetheeffectofobjectiveandfair.Sointhebusinesscontract“itisunderstood/agreedthatthat...”Thisiswhythepassivevoiceisoftenusedinsuchsentencesorwhenusingthingsassubjectsinbusinesscontracts.Thepassivevoiceisalsooftenusedinthecaseofmisunderstandings,contradictionsanddisputesarisingfrombusinessinteractions,whichcaneffectivelysolvetheproblemofcriticizingandblamingtheotherpartydirectly,withobjectiveandpolitelanguage,whichismoreacceptabletotheotherparty,thusensuringthatthetransactioncontinuesinanorderlymannerandthusmaximizingeconomicbenefits.Forexample:Youhaveputusintoinconveniencebyyourdelayindelivery.“you”arereplacedby“we”andthepassivesentenceismorepoliteanddoesnotseemaggressive.Trytocompare“Forthepastthreeyears,youdidnotplaceanyorderfromus.”and“Forthepastthreeyears,noorderhasbeenforthepastthreeyears,youdidnotplaceanyorderfromus”and“Forthepastthreeyears,noorderhasbeenplacedfromus.”Thesecondsentenceomitsthesubject,whichisawidelyusedpassivesentencewithoutthegiverinbusinessEnglish,anditseemslessrigidandeasiertocommunicate.2.3FeaturesofBusinessEnglishTextsCombiningtheaboveunderstandingofbusinessEnglish,wecandefinebusinessEnglishdiscourseinthisway:anytextthatisdirectlyorindirectlycloselyrelatedtothelossoracquisitionofeconomicbenefitsisabusinessdiscourse.BusinessEnglishishighlylinguisticandpurpose-oriented.Oncethecontextofthesentenceisunderstood,thenextstepistointerpretandtranslatethesentenceinthecontextofthewholediscourse.Thatis,inthecontextofEnglisheconomicdiscourse,thatis,theobjectiveworldinvolvedinthenarrativedescriptionofeconomicdiscoursequalifiesandclarifiesthemeaningofthewords.Payattentiontotheoverallstructureandtranslateincontexttoavoidtheproblemoftakingthemeaningoutofcontext.Accordingtofunctionallinguistics,thedomainisalinguisticvariantdeterminedbyaspecificsetofcontextualvalues.Thatis,bythenatureofthesocialactivityperformedbythespeaker,whosemainrestrictivevariablesarethediscoursefield(referringtothecategoryofthesocialactivityperformed),thediscoursepurpose(referringtotherolerelationsbetweenthecommunicators)andthediscoursestyle(referringtothesymbolicstructureofthelinguisticcommunication).Theserestrictivevariablesarecommontoallmembersofthesamediscoursecommunity.TheyareconcretelyreflectedinthefactthatbusinessEnglishhasitsownspecializedvocabularyandsetsofwordsandastereotypedoutlinestructure,which,togetherwithitscommunicativepurpose,constitutesaspecificdiscoursecategoryofbusinessEnglish.2.3.1LowRhetoricalUsageSincetimeislimitedforbothpartiesinabusinessinteractionandthetranslatoractsasasupportperson.Itisnotadvisabletostretchthetimeframeortaketoomuchtimetonegotiateandthetaskshouldbecompletedassoonaspossible.BusinessEnglishisprimarilyusedtoexpresstheideasofbothpartiesinabusinessinteractionandtocapturethefocusofthecommunicationoveraperiodoftime.Iftheuseofmodifiersthathavenorealmeaningisreduced,briefandeffectivecommunicationcanbeachievedveryquickly.Ifitisanarrative,poetryorprose,wecanaddourownfeelingsandaddsomerhetorictodescribeit.Butwhatisneededinbusinesscommunicationistoconveytheinformationofbothsidesfairlyandobjectively.Wealsoneedminimizepersonalsubjectiveemotions,andsolvetheproblemoflanguagebarrierintheshortestpossibletime.2.3.2ObjectivityandPolitenessofExpressionWhenexchanginginformationbetweenthetwosides,someproblemsanddifficultieswillarise,andthetranslatorshouldnotonlyref
