english learning; role the role of recting input in english learning1. introductionrecitation (learning text by heart) is a common tactic as well as an effective method that many successful language learners exploit under different conditions in english teaching. traditionally, it is also a requisite content of language teaching in china. for the reason of the new technology, especially the widespread application of the internet which contributes greatly to the level of language teaching and learning, more and more people put their energies into the new teaching methods with the advanced facilities, ignoring the importance of the traditional recitation. in fact, it should be emphasized that recitation still plays a significant role in english learning, though the modern educational technology helps a lot in english teaching. recently, the communicative teaching method and task teaching method have been questioned in english learning with the popularity of chunks. instead, the recitation as a traditional method of language learning begins to find its prevailing position. no matter what is learned from the perspective of theoretical or empirical experience, the efficient function of recitation, which helps to promote english language learning, is recognized and advocated in many aspects. but foreign researchers who specialize in the second language acquisition have not focused their attention on the recitation, and the domestic related research is merely situated in the initial phase, which has a lot of deficiencies. therefore, the reciting input mode should be further strengthened.this thesis consists of five chapters. the first chapter represents the research background and the significance of reciting input. then, the second chapter briefly introduces the related information about recitation. following, in the third chapter, related research for reciting input is illustrated, including the theoretical basis of reciting input and analysis on some related theories. the fourth chapter aims to express the function of reciting input in english learning. finally, a conclusion is made in the last chapter.through analyzing the related information on reciting input in detail, this thesis on one hand aims to make reciting input play its unique role in the process of english teaching and learning, which can enhance language learners ability, overcome the anxious psychology and weaken the negative influence of the native language to strengthen the accuracy and fluency of language expression. on the other hand, based on some related theories, to deeply explore the theories of reciting input, find out the problems and look for a solution to resolve these problems. it will help to make the theories applied to the practice efficiently. 2. brief introduction to recitationin the course of english language teaching and learning, recitation exerts great influence on the teachers and students. as a second language acquisition, chinese students lack the environment where real communicative language can be produced, especially the colloquial language. therefore, in this situation, recitation can be the simple and practicable way to deal with this issue. according to a lot of recitation, for one, students might practice their language sense; for another, their communicative capacities will be improved. the great value that is related to the recitation is to acquire the abstract grammatical skill rather than those things that have been recited before. then students in english learning will be ale to form a complete grammatical system. for the teachers, recitation is an effective method of language information input which can help them to accumulate and grasp a large number of language materials to avail of the success in english teaching. briefly, recitation is not appropriate for the rules of students language learning but also beneficial to the teaching work. 2.1 the definition of recitationwhat is recitation? recitation is a basic skill as well as an effective method with which the learners can memorize the words without looking at the original text. the modern chinese dictionary considers recitation as the act of reading aloud the text or phrase from memory. oxford english dictionary defines recitation as the act of repeating aloud or declaiming from memory. from the perspective of cognition, recitation is a process of information input. the sound system and the meaning of language symbols, mixed with considerable knowledge in the reciting process, collectively function in the mind, which produce a series of reactive activities, such as sensation, perception and thought. in the educational sense, recitation is a practical method the teachers exploit to inspect students learning situation and feedback on the acquisition of knowledge. it is an efficient approach to cultivate their language intuition, which can deepen the content of what they have acquired in the learning process.2.2 significance of reciting input in language learninglanguage learning in the first phase has an imitative process, and the imitation should first have a mass of language information input as well as rich language accumulation. american linguist krashen proposed that successful foreign language learning should possess abundant, natural corpus and the input with related knowledge. according to considerable language information input, the learner can realize the output of information and the imitation to reach the fluent nature of language expression.mostly, national students who learn english are situated in the first stage, and their language awareness is extremely limited for the lack of second language acquisiton environment which requires effective methods and intensive input of massive language information with lots of corpuses provided for the imitation. therefore, recitation is a shortcut to reach the target and its role should be stressed in the process of english learning.first of all, on one hand, the long and benign repeated language can help to strengthen the knowledge of grammar and the vocabulary. on the other hand, recitation can make the reserve of corpuses3. related research on reciting inputreciting input is the traditional language learning method in china, which is widely used in chinese teaching. english also belongs to a language course, and it is basically the same as chinese teaching. hence, reciting input is also appropriate for english learning and students learning habits3.1 the theoretical basis of reciting inputconsidering reciting input, it is based on krashens theory in second language acquisition.(krashen,1982) in terms of this theory, krashen holds that language acquisition is completed by the language input and the main task in the teaching should focus on the ideal language input for students so as to facilitate language acquisition. the best language input includes four requisite conditions: (1) comprehension; (2) interesting and relevant; (3) not grammatically sequenced; (4) enough amount of input. within these conditions, understandable input is the indispensably environmental factor, which is famous as krashens language input theory. reciting input accords with krashens language input principles. in addition, reciting input is an understandable input. as the language materials concerned with recitation is selected by the teachers from the text learned by the students. such input can be comprehended, and it will help to produce the output of language. by means of reciting input, students can not only contact with the target language more to deepen the understanding and knowledge accumulation, but also learn to use the standard english to express their thoughts so that the negative influence of their mother language can be surmounted. finally, their communicative competence will be improved. therefore, reciting input has a special significance and merits the best language input. bilvstoks theoretical pattern of second language acquisition (1978: 28) divided the linguistic knowledge of foreign language learners into two types: explicit linguistic knowledge and implicit linguistic knowledge. the explicit linguistic knowledge refers to the linguistic knowledge related to all the target language in the learners consciousness, including phonetics, grammar, vocabulary, etc, which exist in the learners consciousness and can be expressed clearly. implicit knowledge refers to those internalized linguistic knowledge that lies in the learners subconscious mind, which can make the learner use language smoothly without thinking. from such linguistic pattern, a conclusion can be made that the more implicit knowledge a person possesses, with the higher level could he skillfully use the target language.corder (1981,79)thinks that the learners mother language provides rich hypotheses that is concerned with the target language, and with a large amount input of target language, the disturbing degree will decrease so that a cognitive and grammatical system can be developed. this point is very important in the first stage but usually ignored. actually, students often read intensively on the paragraph or text, merely analyzing the grammar in each sentence and the verbal usage. in fact, context is an important factor to grasp the words, and the amount of language input as an effective method can overcome the disturbance of the mother language. from the perspective of information processing, memory is a process involves the information input, processing, reserve and output, etc. the knowledge that people grasp mainly comes from the conscious memory which refers to the memorization with certain purpose as well as volitional effort leads to the active attitude of the learner. thus, the content of the memorization will be complete, and the effort stable. schmid (1990) in his noticing hypothesis points out that all the learning needs attention which can be the most concentrated during the process of reciting input.many scholars have a large number of studies on reciting input. deng liming (2001, 4) points that reciting input can overcome the negative transfer in english writing; ding yanren (2001, 5) has illustrated the positive effect of reciting text on the phrasal knowledge. whats more, (2003,4)dong wwei and fu lixus experimental research has proved that reciting input has a promoting effect on translating and writing.3.2 analysis on some related theory of reciting inputas the significance of the reciting input become more salient and important in the language teaching and learning, which requires some theoretical studies to reinforce its role, like these theories, language input hypothesis, memelies as well as the research on the emotional disorder of reciting input. they contribute a lot to the development of this field.3.2.1 language input hypothesisthe relationship between language input and the second language acquisition is an important theory. on this study, the most widely affected linguist is stephen d. krashen (1985) whose theory about second language acquisition exerts profound influence on the foreign language learning. his theory consists of five hypotheses, of which language input hypothesis belongs the central part. in this hypothesis, krashen holds that when the learner contacts comprehensible input beyond his current language level of language input and he can focus his attention on comprehending the meaning or information rather than the comprehension about the form, under such condition, the acquisition will be appropriate. this is his famous “ i+1” formula. “ i” represents the current learning level; “1” refers to the language material beyond the learners level. krashen argues that there is no need for people to provide this “ i+1” input with purpose, only the learner comprehends the input language and possesses enough amount of input, will such pattern be naturally realized. if the learners level is “i”, what can promote his language acquisition will be “i+1 ”. according to the input hypothesis, the fluency of speech realized naturally in time sequence cannot be taught directly, denying the effect of teaching in class as well as lowering to some extent the enthusiasm of teachers and students. in krashens view, an ideal language input should possess these four characteristics (the aforementioned conditions): comprehension. the language information input based on the comprehension is the requisite condition, while the incomprehensible language input is totally invalid for the learner.interesting and relevant. for the purpose to make the language input beneficial to the language acquisition, its form and meaning must be processed, and the more interesting the input of language material is, the more
