But those factoriesor even the jammed roadways of modern citiesare not the biggest killer. Each year, some 4.3 million people die earlier than they should because of polluted air inside their homes, says the WHO.Whats causing the air inside peoples homes to be so poisonous that it kills around 11,000 people a day? Stoves. “Having an open fire in your kitchen is like burning 400 cigarettes an hour.” says Kirk Smith, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, whose research suggests that household air pollution from cooking killed between 3.5 million and 4 million people in 2013.Not all stoves cause this kind of harm. The ones Smiths talking about are those that the 3 billion people in the developing world use for heat and cooking, which burn solid fuels such as wood, coal, or crop waste instead of gas. The smoke from those fires produces harmful fine particles and carbon monoxide into homes. Poor ventilation then prevents that smoke from escaping, raising fine particle levels 100 times higher than the limits that the WHO considers acceptable.Breathing this air day in day out eventually causes a lot of diseases: more than a third of the 4.3 million die of a stroke, while a quarter die of heart disease. And around one-third of annual lung disease deaths worldwide are due to waste from coal stoves.Exposure tends to be extremely harmful for the people who spend the most time around the fireusually women and young children. In fact, the WHO reports that household air pollution almost doubles the risk for childhood lung disease.5According to Kirk Smiths research,_.A. factories are the biggest killer worldwide nowadaysB. burning 400 cigarettes an hour is extremely dangerousC. household air pollution from cooking is surprisingly harmfulD. some 4.3 million people die earlier each year than they should6What should be the deadly killer in a household kitchen?A. This is the first in a series of posts that explore and understand how each of the above forms of intelligence is affected by technology-mediated education.Verbal-linguistic Intelligence involves sensitivity to spoken and written language, the ability to learn languages, and the capacity to use language to accomplish goals. Such intelligence is developed by three specific activities: reading, writing and interpersonal communicationboth written and oral. The traditional tools that have been used to efficiently develop verbal/linguistic intelligencetextbook, pencil, and paperare giving way to technology in many schools. E-books, Internet lesson plans, online assignments and word processing software, or a subset of the above, are now common in schools. Technology allows addition of multisensory (多种感觉的) elements that provide meaningful contexts to help comprehension, thus expanding the learning ground of language and linguistics.Research into the effect of technology on the development of the language and literacy skills vis-vis reading activities of children has offered evidence for favorable effects of digital-form books. A study shows that digital reading materials have become common in developing countries in early childhood classrooms to support engagement in storybooks while enhancing the emergent literacy (早期读写能力) among children. E-books are also being increasingly used to teach reading among beginners and children with reading difficulties.Technology can be used to improve reading ability in many ways. It can enhance (加强) and sustain the interest levels for children by allowing immediate feedback on performance and providing added practice when necessary. Recent research shows that students are able to improve their sight word vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension through computer-based reading.Technology can also help in improvement of writing skills. Word processing software promotes not only composition but also editing and revising in ways that streamline the task of writing. Desktop publishing and web-based publishing allow the work to be taken beyond the classroom into a virtual world that allows more constructive interactions.Technology enhanced oral communication is indeed useful in that it allows students from remote locations, or from all over the world to communicate orally through video and audio conferencing tools. For example, students of languages in Australian universities overcome the problem of insufficient contact with native language speakers by using online audio and video tools that allow the development of aural, vocal and visual-cognition skills that are important in verbal and linguistic education. Oral group discussions in the form of video conferencing can help non-native speakers of a language with natural language negotiation and cultural intonations in ways that have not been possible due to geographic isolation.Computer definitely aided language learning and computer mediated communication enhance teaching and learning experiences in the areas of linguistics and language intelligence. Although there have not been comprehensive studies on the use of technologies to aid K-12 English-language learners, there have been many individual computer programs and other technologies that accelerate the acquisition of phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and reading-comprehension skills and other language building blocks.Title: How Technology Can Help Language LearningParagraph outlineDetailed informationBrief introduction to Verbal-linguistic IntelligenceHoward Gardner thinks that intelligence is of eight types, 30_ from verbal-linguistic to naturalistic intelligence.Verbal-linguistic Intelligence, 31_ of three aspects, is developed by three specific activities.Technology is 32_ traditional tools used to develop verbal/linguistic intelligence efficiently. The learning ground of language and linguistics has been 33_ by adding multisensory elements to language learning.Effects on language and literacy skillsDigital reading materials have been used to help children in developing countries get 34_ in storybooks, enhancing the emergent literacy among them.Effects on reading abilityTechnology can enhance and sustain childrens interest levels by providing immediate feedback and extra practice.Effects on writing skillsTechnology allows our work to be taken in a virtual world with more constructive35_.Effects on oral communicationTechnology allows students to communicate orally through video and audio conferencing tools36_ geographic isolation.ConclusionThere is no37_ that technology enhances teaching and learning experiences concerning linguistics and language intelligence.Although there is a 38_ of comprehensive studies on the use of technologies to aid K-12 English-language learners, there have been other technologies that39_ the acquisition of language building blocks.五、根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。40 Being angry doesnt really solve much, but what people do when they feel angry is important. The goal is to calm down and try to solve what is bothering you. This is hard for some kids and adults, too. Instead of calming down, some kids might keep getting more and more upset until they explode like a volcano!41 Their anger might be so strong that they lose control of their temper. They may act in ways unacceptable and hurtful. People may say that someone has trouble controlling their temper. 42 Some kids might get so angry that they scream at their parents, break something, or even worse, hit their brothers or sisters. 43 However, its not OK for a kid to do any of those things. Kids dont want to act in this way, but sometimes angry feelings can be hard to manage. So what to do? Well, the good news is that kids dont just have to keep making the same mistakes over and over again. 44 Imagine your temper as a puppy inside you that needs some training. The puppy is not badit will probably turn out a great dog. It just needs to learn some rules because, right now, that puppy is causing some problems to you.A. Kids should be allowed to express their feelings, even angry ones.B. You can train you temper.C. You dont want to cause trouble.D.
