At the check-out counter,a mother didnt have enough money for her bill. The grocery store manager removed some items from her cart and carried them back to the refrigerator section. My son and I watched, trying not to interrupt. There have been times I myself didn t have money to buy groceries, but today was different. It was payday so there we stood in line with our groceries. The lady left with her little son and fewer groceries than she had planned, I whispered to my son and told him Lu run and get the manager back with the items. 1 paid for them together with my items. Then my son and I ran to the parking lot where we thought we would find the lady. But the lady and her son were gone. I have no idea where they went. My son and I walked around the parking lot, asking other shoppers if they had seen them. No one had. They were gone in 60 seconds and with them ivent my opportunity to gift these items- Then,we had a lovely conversation with another mother in the parking lot. She said that its people like me that gave her hope, but I didnt feel like hope at all. I felt terrible for not speaking up in the store and telling her what I wanted to do for her. I kept thinking about the reasons for my hesitation: I didn t want to embarrass her;I didnt want to cause a fuss.I was worried about my purse and my future grocery trips. Even though I didnt believe any of them, processing them slowed me down. If we allow our minds to slow our actions towards acting for love and kindness, will it still be an act of kindness? In my opinion, our best way to make kindness from this story is forgiving ourselves for our delay, for holding back what our hearts and hands knew to do. Perhaps because of this, our future acts will be delivered quicker as intended. After all, self forgiveness is also an act of kindness,24. Researchers at Binghamton University, State University of New York have created a biodegradable (能生物降解的),paper-based battery that is more efficient than previously possible. For years, there has been eKcitement in the scientific community about the possibility of papei-based batteries as an eco-friendly alternative. Howeverf the proposed designs were never quite powerful enough, they were difficult to produce and it was questionable whether they were really biodegradable. This new design solves all of those problems* Associate Professor Seokheun “Sean” Choi from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and Professor Omowunmi Sadik from the Chemistry Department worked on the project together. Choi engineered the design of the paper-based battery, while Sadik was able to make the battery a self-sustaining biobattery-“Theres been a dramatic increase in electronic waste and this may be an excellent way to start reducing that,”said Choi, “Out hybrid paper battery exhibited a much higher power-to-cost ratio(比率)than all previously reported paper-based batteries powered by bacteria, ” The biobattery uses a hybrid of paper and engineered polymers (聚合物The polymerspoly ( amic ) acid and poly ( pyromellitic dianhydride-p-phenylenediamine )were the key to giving the batteries V)iodegrading properties. The team tested the degradation (降解)of the battery in water and it clearly biodegraded without the requirements of special facilities, conditions or introduction of other microorganisms. The polymer-paper structures are lightweight and flexible. Choi said that flexibility also provided another benefit. “Power enhancement can be potentially achieved by simply folding or piling the flexible paper-polymer batteries,” said Choi. The team said that producing the biobatteries is a fairly straightforward process and that the material allows for changes depending on what structure or shape is needed. The work was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation and done through the Center for Research in Advanced Sensing Technologies and Environmental Sustainability( CRASTES).28. Which is a problem of the previously proposed designs?A. It is extremely difficult to charge them. B. There is no easy way to produce them.C. They are too expensive. D. They arent really biodegradable.29. What advantage did Choi mention of the newly invented battery in paragraph 4?A. Its lower cost-to-power ratio. B.Its function of reducing water pollution.C.Its larger surface area.D. Its new organization of bacteria.30. What can we know about the degradation of the biobatteiy?A. It goes the best in pure water. B. It requires no special conditions.C, It results in a harmful state of soil. D. It relies mainly on the paper in the battery.31. What does the underlined word “enhancement” in paragraph 6 probably mean?A.Leakage. B. Reserve, C. Flow. D. Increase.D Africas elephants have reached a tipping (point- Researchers of a study believe that since 2014 an average of nearly 35,000 elephants have been killed annually on the continent. They warn that if the rate of poaching(偷猎)continues, the animals can be wiped out in 100 years. The illegal trade in elephant tusks(长牙)has increased in recent years f and a kilogram of ivoiy (象牙)is now worth thousands of dollars. Much of the demand has been driven by a fast growing ivory market in Asia. While conservationists have long said the future for the elephants is not encouraging, this study provides a detailed assessment of the impact poaching is having on Africas elephants. The researchers have found that between 2014 and 2017,Africa lost an average of 7% of its entire elephant population each year. Because elephant births increase the population by about 5% annually, this means that overall more animals are being killed than being bom. Julian Blanc, who worked on the study, said:“If this lasts long, then we will see great declines over time. The other thing to bear in mind is that different areas are affected differently* There are still healthy growing populations in parts of Africa, Botswana for example. But in other places the poaching levels are high, and that is particularly the case in Central Africa. ” In Central Africa it h said that elephant numbers have fallen by about 60% in a decade. Lead author George Wittemyer, from Colorado State University added:“We are talking about taking away the oldest and biggest elephants. That means taking the adult males and the family mothers away, which leaves behind little ones and broken elephant societies.” Conservationists said urgent action was needed. John Scanlon f secretary-general of Cites, said : “The world needs to decide how much further effort it wants to put into the conservation of this species. In terms of concrete actions,we need to improve local livelihoods (for those living with elephants),strengthen enforcement ( making sure those are punished who break the laws concerning elephant protection) and reduce demand for illegal ivory, ”32. Why have so many Africas elephants been killed?A. Their population has reached a tipping point.B. Markets in Africa are now growing quite quickly.C. Their tusks are in great demand and illegally traded.D. They wiped out some animal species on the continent.33. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 5 refer to?A. The aging of elephant population. B. Higher elephant birth rate in recent years.C. The high poaching level in the whole Africa. D. More deaths than births in elephant population.34. What should we do to protect Africas elephants according to John Scanlon?A. Limit the price of ivory. B. Punish people who hunt elephants.C. Supply better food to elephants. D. Forbid elephant training for tourism.35. What would be the best title for the text?A. Reasons for fierce elephant poaching in Africa.B. Botswana is an example of elephant protection.C. Poaching puts Africas elephants in danger of dying out.D. Ways to break the links in the illegal ivory trade chain.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Research shows interpersonal relationships can be highly beneficial for both mental and physical health. Social relationships can make a positive influence on the choices people make about their health and the support other provide can help people successfully face challenges. 36 To strengthen a relationship, both parties need to put time and effort into developing it and making it stronger. Make the effort to be involved. Without active involvement, personal relationships can stop. If you dont make the effort to communicate, relate to one another, and be an active presence in each others lives, you could potentially lose the connection and understanding you once had. You may discover this during a difficult time, when the support you expected isnt there. 37 Take responsibility for yourself. In healthy and strong relationships, each person takes responsibility for personal feelings and needs. It means that instead of expecting that the other person will make you happy or feel loved, you learn to do this for yourself. 38 Blaming is a major source of discord(不和谐)in relationships. 39 Be an individual while still allowing friends and loved ones to connect with you. Its important to make your partner or family members happy, but you shouldnt be doing so at the expense of your own wants and needs. Dont be afraid to develop your own interests. View your relationship as a journey. All relationships are works in progress. 40 Its valuable to think of a relationship as a journey that moves forward. If a relationship is truly important to you, you should give it up under no circumstances.A. Set healthy boundaries.B. Sacrifice yourself for the better of others.C. Gall, talk and see each other on a regular basis,D. Join your friends if they invite you to do what they like.E. Dont blame someone else for things that are upsetting you.F. Theres nothing you can do to suddenly create a strong relationship.G. These benefits make it important to pay attention to the relationships you have with others. It started 4 years ago.
