Although it is acknowledged that modal auxiliaries are one.【关键词】核心情态动词 语义演变 主语情态 言者情态 认识情态【英文关键词】primary English modal verbs semantic changes subject-oriented modality speaker-oriented modality epistemic modality【索购全文】联系Q1:138113721 Q2:139938848【目录】英语核心情态动词的历时语义演变研究摘要5-7Abstract7-8Abbreviations12-13List of Tables13-15List of Figures15-16Chapter 1 Introduction16-191.1 Background of the present study16-171.2 Objectives and significance of the study171.3 Feasibility of the study17-181.4 Outline of the thesis18-19Chapter 2 Literature Review19-312.1 Synchronic study on modality and modal verbs19-252.2 Diachronic study on modality and modal verbs25-292.3 Summary29-31Chapter 3 Methodology and Data Collection31-353.1 Theoretical basis of the present study31-323.2 Research method and data collection32-353.2.1 Research method32-333.2.2 Data Collection33-35Chapter 4 Changing Regularities of the Senses of Primary English Modals35-784.1 Sense Development of MAY40-484.1.1 MAY in OE period40-434.1.2 MAY in ME period43-454.1.3 MAY in EmodE period454.1.4 MAY in ModE period45-474.1.5 A Summary of MAY47-484.2 Sense Development of Can48-554.2.1 CAN in OE period48-494.2.2 CAN in ME period49-524.2.3 CAN in EModE period52-534.2.4 CAN in ModE period53-544.2.5 A Summary of CAN54-554.3 Sense Development of MUST55-634.3.1 MUST in OE period55-574.3.2 MUST in ME period57-584.3.3 MUST in EModE period58-594.3.4 MUST in ModE period59-614.3.5 A Summary of MUST61-634.4 Sense Development of WILL63-704.4.1 WILL in OE period63-654.4.2 WILL in ME period65-674.4.3 WILL in EModE period67-684.4.4 WILL in ModE period68-694.4.5 A Summary of WILL69-704.5 Sense Development of SHALL70-764.5.1 SHALL in OE period70-724.5.2 SHALL in ME period72-734.5.3 SHALL in EModE period73-744.5.4 SHALL in ModE period74-754.5.5 A Summary of SHALL75-764.6 A Summary of the Semantic Changes of Primary English Modals76-78Chapter 5 Motivations and Mechanisms of the Semantic Change of the English Modals78-875.1 Metaphor and Metonymy78-815.2 Grammaticalization81-845.2.1 Unidirectionality815.2.2 Subjectivity and Subjectivisation81-825.2.3 Invited Inferencing Theory of Semantic Change (IITSC)82-845.3 Categori
