For many people, these days, a wedding is an extravagant affair with no expense spared. However, there is one price that is too high to pay for some environmentally conscious soon-to-be-weds, and that is the impact a wedding can have on our environment. Among the preparations, the travel, the food and the gifts it is difficult to focus on sustainability, so here is a list of little things a couple can do to take their big day from white to green. There are many options for invitations that dont involve hours of calligraphy and little silk bows. Email is a great option because it uses no paper and it is much quicker. If you choose to send out mailed invites, make sure you use 100% recyclable paper and ask your guests to recycle them. There is also the interesting option of having little seeds embedded in your invitation so that the guests can plant them afterwards. Just make sure the paper has not been processed with chemicals that would be harmful to the garden. When it comes to flowers and food, try to find local organic suppliers. Organic is a good choice for the Earth and having it grown and picked locally means less travel for shipment and ultimately less pollution. If you are a vegetarian then go ahead and have a vegetarian menu. It is your day and you shouldnt have to cater to anyone elses preferences. Make sure any leftover food that can not be saved and eaten is composted appropriately. Try contacting a nearby nursery or farm to see if they would like the leftovers that they can put to use. The dress is a pivotal part of a wedding for the bride to be. You dont have to sacrifice elegance and beauty to be a friend to the environment. Try buying a vintage dress, or wearing one that is in the family. If you choose to go new then check that the fabric has been made with low impact technology and is made from natural fibers. After the special day is over, you can consider donating your dress to make another new brides wedding dreams come true. Travel is hard to avoid when planning and putting on a wedding. Have the guests stay in accommodations as close as possible to the venue and if possible have the wedding and reception in the same place to cut down travel distances. Ask your guests to consider car pooling or finding less harmful ways to travel. Try to get away from disposables. You can rent real dishes to cut down on waste. Use recyclable programs and menus with vegetable dye ink. The place settings and wedding favors should not be disposable either. You can consider using potted plants and flowers for the floral arrangements and double them as gifts for your guests. Wine, free-trade coffees and teas, and gift certificates also make fantastic wedding gifts with little harmful impact. For your own wedding gifts ask your guests to donate to an environmental group or make a donation to companies and groups devoted to developing green technology. Newlywed couples should not have to feel guilty about celebrating their love, and with a few changes to the traditional wedding idea they can celebrate their love for the Earth we live on at the same time. When planning your special day take into consideration all the aspects which could have a negative impact on the environment. Making simple choices to help sustain and protect our environment will get you and your future spouse on the track to a happy and green life together. 蝴蝶结Recycle回收利用Organic施有机肥料的Ultimatelyin the endCater toAmE迎合,满足try to satisfy; BrE: cater forPreferencelikingLeftoverremaining, unusedCompost把做成堆肥Nursery (garden)苗圃Pivotal至关重要的,关键的crucialSacrificev. lose, give upVintageof lasting value, classicFabric织物,纺织品clothFiberAmE纤维;BrE: fibrePut on安排arrangeAccommodations接待Venue举办地点,举行场所placeCut down (on)reduceDisposable一次性用品Vegetable dye植物色素Favor小礼品small giftFantasticextremely good, wonderfulDonation捐赠SustainmaintainPart Three Home Listening Scientists Push for More Marine Protected AreasTask One Question One: Why do you think Marine Protected Areas are such a good idea?Answers: Nowadays fishing has spread to encompass actually the whole of the sea less than 2000m deep, and in some places even deeper. Besides, fishing technology has become increasingly sophisticated and efficient, causing major declines and threatening some species with extinction. Today, the only refuges from fishing are those we deliberately create, so MPAs are no longer optional, they are essential.Question Two: Can MPAs have a role in protecting all marine species?Answers: MPAs can only protect the sea animals when they are within their border. But mobile species can benefit in other ways, for instance, the increse of prey species and recovery of habitat structure in reserves can offer them better feeding opportunities or increase survival of the young.Question Three: What do you think are the essential ingredients of a good MPA?Answers: Three things are necessary: a high level of protection from extractive and harmful human uses; adequate resources to implement protection; and a strong commitment to conservation from the public and law enforcers.Scientists Push for More Marine Protected AreasJournalist: Why do you think Marine Protected Areas are such a good idea? Professor Roberts: In the past, there appeared little need for marine protection. The oceans are vast and human impact on marine species and habitats seemed trivial by comparison. But fishing has spread to encompass virtually the whole of the sea less than 2000m deep, and in some places it reaches deeper. At the same time, fishing technology has become increasingly sophisticated and efficient, causing major declines across many taxa and threatening some species with extinction. Today, the only refuges from fishing are those we deliberately create. If we are to safeguard sea life, marine protected areas are no longer optional, they are essential.Marine reserves that are off limits to all fishing could also help restore the productivity of fisheries. They form refuges where breeding animals can live longer, grow large and produce far more offspring than they could in fished areas. By increasing population sizes of marine species and recovering habitats damaged and degraded by fishing, marine reserves can also increase the resilience of ocean ecosystems to environmental shocks and climate change. Journalist: Can MPAs have a role in protecting all marine species, for instance can they have a role in protecting highly migratory fish species such as tuna?Professor Roberts: Marine protected areas can protect animals only when they are within their borders. But that doesnt mean that they will not benefit mobile species. Mobile species are often targeted by fishers at times and places where they are concentrated and vulnerable, like spawning aggregations or migration bottlenecks. Putting marine reserves in these places can afford them significant protection. However, they can also benefit from reserves in other ways. For example, increased abundances of prey species and recovery of habitat structure in reserves can give migratory species better feeding opportunities or increase survival of their young.Journalist: What do you think are the essential ingredients of a good MPA?Professor Robe
